So how do you colour your own hair?

Now we can’t go to hairdressers -I’ve never coloured my own hair.
I’ve had an Aveda semi permanent. It sits on the roots for at least half an hour then gets combed in.
I can’t ask my hairdresser she has enough on her plate :(.
Guess I could pay for a telephone consultation with her?

I colour mine all the time. It's dead easy. There are always fairly easy to use instructions in the box. I open and read the instructions before starting so I feel like I know what I'm doing.

It’s easy. I sometimes do my myself. I start with a middle parting and work my way down the sides, parting as I go.

Then I get my husband to do the back, but not impossible to do the back yourself.

don't you have to start by judging how grey your natural hair is and what kind of product you need? Or are there tutorials on youtube for that?

Please don’t forget to do a patch test! It’s a very small chance you’ll be allergic but you don’t want to be using the NHS at the moment.

I find that the main difference between home colour and salon colour is the actual hair colour choice. A stylist would mix the colour to match yours. Many of the ones off the shelf are not very natural. There are some custom online hair dyes out there, which means you can order a colour mixed specifically for you (eSalon). It might be worth a look, if you don't get good results from the off the shelf ones.

Does anybody else have recommendations for good quality at home dyes?

I am 50 with darkish brown and caramel shoulder length hair. Normally get my roots done every 5 weeks.

Pretty sure I will be pure grey/ white underneath as I started to go grey in my early 20’s.

I know we will all have bigger problems soon but I don’t feel ready to go grey yet. Don’t think I could cope with that along with everything else going on.

I have just realised I have an appt for Tuesday. So moral dilemma time again (hairdress is single mum and self-employed).

Do I ask her to come do it in my garden?
Or do I leave her to suffer?

I think the government need to step in to help the self-employed up to the same extent as laid-off employees.

My colourist gave me the exact mix for my hair. As an example, I use Revlon revlonissimo, 2 parts 8sn and 1 part 7sn and 20 vol.

My hair is dark blonde/caramel.

For permanent dye - Loreal Majirel. It's slightly more complicated than a box dye and you have to buy it all separately to mix, but you will probably get better results. There are lots of threads on here about Majirel. Then check out YouTube as well for tips.

For semi permanent - loreal dialight. I havent used the darker colours of this as I now have bleached hair but I use it for toning and it's great!

Having said that, when I had dark hair I used Nice and Easy Medium Brown every 4 weeks for about 10 years and it did the job fine! Have always done my own hair.

Right now I can't even bear thinking about not going to my hairdresser. Yesterday my pilates instructor (a man) was crying.

It's just a lot to get your head round - doing things that seem incredibly mean and selfish like cutting the legs out from someone who is self-employed.

You may be taking the opportunity to let yourself go feral, but we aren't all that fatalistic.

I have always used box dyes - semi permanent. Just follow the instructions on the box. Easy. You don’t need a YouTube video..

@BlackSwan it’s more the ops tone, implying that she’s saving the self employed single mother (who probably lives on a council estate) from starvation by being unselfish and letting her do her hair. It’s beyond words to me.
I go to the hairdressers, I get my nails done, I have my eyelashes tinted but I wouldn’t dream of going to any of these appointments at the moment, its selfish and irresponsible that vanity precedes health.

I actually thought this thread was a wind up when I read about the (male) Pilates teacher, why male had to be mentioned I have no idea.
Do what most women will do over the coming months, buy a box dye and learn how to do it yourself.

We all want life to go back to normal as soon as possible, by keeping trivial appointments like these it will take longer.

I have the same dilemma - been getting my hair coloured for over 20 years and know it will be very grey/white judging from the roots. I have long dark hair with highlights. My salon has closed - they use L'Oreal products - I have never coloured my own and haven't a clue what to buy. Can anyone recommend a brand and how you can choose the colour on line, please?

Yes, I know it isn't important in the grand scheme of things, but I can't bear being grey on top of everything else (and my DH has never seen me with anything other than coloured hair!).

Easy to do. I always do cut (just a trim, nothing special) and colour mine at home and people assume I get it done professionally so it can't look too bad.

What colour are you planning to do it? I would advise to stay away from red, and if you're planning to use bleach then read up a lot first on how to do it in a way that will cause the least damage (and definitely do not fall asleep with bleach on your hair like I once did - it took well over a year for my hair to recover!) There are lots of helpful videos on YouTube.
