So how do you colour your own hair?

Now we can’t go to hairdressers -I’ve never coloured my own hair.
I’ve had an Aveda semi permanent. It sits on the roots for at least half an hour then gets combed in.
I can’t ask my hairdresser she has enough on her plate :(.
Guess I could pay for a telephone consultation with her?

I have blonde highlights (bleach) on my naturally dark blonde/light brown hair.
I’ve tried box dyes before, when I was about 17ish and they’ve always left it looking orange or a horrid brassy yellow.
Josh Wood’s home colour kits look good, but will I likely get the same dreaded result? I’m tempted to just leave it to until we’re clear to go out to hairdressers again. I’d rather have roots and greys than the previous disasters! Does anyone have experience of using these for blonde colours?

No experience of that brand but toner will take away the brassy look. You bleach your hair then put the toner on. There's lots of tips online about this too.

If you feel really bad, think the world of her as you say and can usually afford to have it coloured, why not order a home dye online and have it delivered and give her the usual cost of your colour with her, minus what you've paid for home dye.

Then you're spending what you can afford and making such a difference to her.

I'm self employed, that would mean the world to me. I don't want to put anyone at risk or be put at risk.

It's hurting and I'm shit scared about money but the alternative is even worse.

Please don't be selfish - every non essential contact puts more and more people at risk.

Doing what I've suggested above would make her year.

Be careful when bleaching hair - toner will not solve all problems if it hasn't lifted enough. If it it still orange or even too dark a yellow then a purple toner (and certainly purple shampoo) won't do anything, you will need something more blue based.

Wow that’s a great idea! Ok - so I will text her suggesting this. Bonus for me: I get the benefit of her advice/can skype her when I put it on, etc.

I use Koleston Perfect - my hairdresser told me the mix to buy years ago, but I always used a box dye and just had it cut in the salon. I usually buy from Sally’s, but ordered from EBay recently which was much cheaper. My hair is about 10/20% grey, and a reddy brown, so I mix 55/0 and 5/37, with 6% peroxide. I do 15ml of each shade to 30ml peroxide, ad have a tint bowl and brush, plus a tail comb for sectioning it off.

I tend to do a clarifying shampoo, apply colour to roots for 20 minutes, then comb through and leave for another 20 minutes before rinsing.

I couldn’t get any gloves in Sally’s a few weeks ago, presumably people bought them up for CV. I ended up having to buy a box dye just to get the gloves, and have kept them to reuse.

Majirel is a good brand to use. A safe bet is to mix one tube which is 50mls with 75mls of 20vol (6%) developer. If covering roots, a safe bet is to choose a base colour which closely matches your own eg. If you have dark brown hair use level 4, medium brown hair use a level 5. Dark blonde use level 6. Lighter blondes use a 7 or 8. Order online from Sally's or Capitol trade shop. To apply to the roots use a hot cross bun technique - as if there are the lines of a hot cross bun on the top of your head. So divide hair down the middle and then across from ear to ear. Then horizontally work your way down each of these four sections, from top to bottom using a tint brush to brush the colour onto your roots. You may need a ponytail comb to hold in one hand to help section, as you pull the hair up keep it nice and taunt so you can easily get ro your roots. May be easier to mix the colour in a squidgy bottle with a nozzle head to apply. Leave it on the roots for 20 then apply to the ends if you need to refresh the ends. Good luck

I'm seriously thinking this is the time to try it. Not many people will see it and I'll get it all cut off in December

I had my coloured at the hairdresser a few weeks ago but will need to plan for when it grows out!

I usually top up with the roots only box dye (sorry can't remember the brand) but it's only a small quantity and I can't get to the back.

Is the John Frida one non drippy?

I bleach mine as it's easier and this way I only need to do it every 2 - 3 months. If I coloured it I would have to do it every 3 weeks because of the roots.

I just mix bleaching powder with peroxide, leave it on for 30 minutes then rinse out. A day later I tone it with toning solution.

I've been colouring/bleaching/cutting my own hair for 20 years so now I do it better than a hairdresser could. Plus it costs very little.
