What's the alternative to skinny jeans?

bobbiewickham · 09/09/2007 13:58

Are bootcuts really dead?

I've tried to keep going with them as long as possible, as they suit my body shape (size 14, bit of a muffin top and erm, comfy thighs) but even to my eyes the old bootcuts are looking fogey.

What to do?

Wideleg/boycuts have been my saviour throughout summer, as they look fine with birkies/flipflops, but now autumn is coming, what jeans do I wear with heels/boots for a smarter look when skinnies just are not made for me?

Is this a sign of ageing? Are my jeans-wearing days over? And why do shops like Monsoon make straight leg jeans with a 'waistband' that barely covers my caesarean scar?

Help!

gap long and lean
(collar an assistant and make them keep bringing you different ones till they get it right)

lou33 · 09/09/2007 15:01

i think wide legged jeans/trousers look really nice with heels myself

bobbiewickham · 09/09/2007 16:24

I'm afraid gap long and lean fit me where they touch

Do wide legs look okay with heels? I'll try it.

Anyone else got any ideas?

(Other than lose a stone. I'm working on that one. With no success).

what about normal straight legged jeans?

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/09/2007 16:34

oh I hate skinny jeans - bootcuts for ever !! they suit me really well and I think they look good...an alternative would be wide legged jeans - still ok with boots I reckon ! (well, that's what I'm doing )

bobbiewickham · 09/09/2007 16:36

That's what I'm looking for, but they all come with really low waists, which don't work for me, what with my muffin top and all.

I suppose what I really want is a pair of straight cut jeans with a reasonably high, but not too high, waist.

That, and George Clooney's undivided attention.

I'd've thought a low waist would avoid any tummy fat pushing up ? that's why I like 'em !!

bobbiewickham · 09/09/2007 16:41

Don't be outraged, Lou33! I would love a pair, I just don't have the body to carry them off!

Maryannsingleton - I agree that a low waist does flatter certain areas, but I need other certain areas reining in. Like my big fat wobbly hips. My problem is exacerbated by the fact that I have a long back, so low rise on me is really, really low rise. Like, pants on show low rise.

Help!

mmm, some low rises are scarily bottom revealing, that's true. It's a minefield, this trouser business. I'm just ordering a pair of wide legged trousers from White Stuff - have you check them out ? www.whitestuff.com

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/09/2007 16:44

the mighty blighty trouser, if you're interested ! (in coffee)

bobbiewickham · 09/09/2007 16:48

They look nice.

How do the sizes come up?

To add to this topic, I still can't get over the 80s revival but would wear them if you can wear them with big shoes to divert attention away from the upper bit. Can you wear skinnys with big shoes?

bobbiewickham · 09/09/2007 16:56

There's always the Minnie Mouse / golf club factor to contend with, isn't there?

I'm sure you would look wonderful, but I would look like a fat Max Wall.

i cant get over return of hte maxi dress

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/09/2007 17:26

oh dear, big shoes would look very Minnie Mouse !
Bobbie - the White Stuff sizes are pretty ok these days ie. you can rely on a 12 fitting a size 12, tops tend to be cut small,in my opinion. The only trouble with the trousers are that they are long - even the regular ones...

MrsMarvel · 09/09/2007 17:29

Thought so, but frankly the silver pumps with skinnys look is just going to make me look like an elephant ballerina.

bobbiewickham · 09/09/2007 17:37

Ah, the long trousers problem.
A problem when, like me, Ernie Wise left you his legs in his will.

Painting an attractive picture of myself, aren't I?

I think I'm going to give up on fashion and grow old gracefully.

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/09/2007 18:17

oh don't say that MrsMarvel !

MrsMarvel · 09/09/2007 18:31

But I've still got the skinny jeans I wore when I was 16! They simply weren't designed for anyone more than a size16 and low slung ones were only designed for pre-pregnancy tummies.

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/09/2007 13:22

Just reporting back on my White Stuff trousers which I ordered - just arrived and fit bottom etc v well and look nice - lovely coffee colour and nice fabric etc but still v long - must be the way these things are these days !

KommandantColditz · 13/09/2007 13:28

How old are you Mrsmarvel? I ask because I wear bootcut and am 27 - am I looking old in them i wonder?

indiasmum · 13/09/2007 13:33

i am a 16 and wear skinnies usually with a longer style top on top. they are fiine, much more stylish than bootcut imho which are a bit old fashioned now i think. gap skinnies are more of a straight lleg and therefore not too scary. also i find i need to get a size larger with stretch works wonders in hiding the muffin top because you arent squeezing it in and over iyswim.

indiasmum · 13/09/2007 13:34

oh and i got some very flattering ones from primark for £8!
