If you don't have a dressing table, where do you get ready?

Having to have a little rearrange in the house as baby number 1 is on the way and we will be using the current dressing room as nursery. I haven't really got the space for my dressing table to go so I'm wondering where you all get ready if you don't have a dressing table?

Make up in the bathroom
Hair sitting on the bed

Lindylooboo · 28/02/2020 17:40

I do my make up in the dining room where there is a mirror on the wall. Plenty of natural light there so it works better anyway.

CrowleysBentley · 28/02/2020 19:18

I have a dressing table, that I do use regularly, but I have just ordered a big chest of drawers to replace it with as we are quite short on storage. I will probably end up doing makeup sat on my bed with a mirror on my bedside table, though I will probably sit on the end of my bed and use the wardrobe door mirror to do my hair.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 28/02/2020 19:20

I do have a dressing table but I never use it, I prefer to sit on the floor with my makeup bag, I find it far comfier

Fatted · 28/02/2020 19:24

Make up gets done sitting in bed with a hand held mirror. Hair gets done standing in front of the full length mirror.

When my DC were babies I did it in the living room with them in their bouncers or rolling around the bed.

Combination of sat on the sofa/my bed whatever the kids will leave me alone because that's where the plugs are (for hair drying and styling tools) and because there's decent light. I do my basic makeup in the bathroom mirror when I do my teeth in the morning though, because I don't wear any foundation, blush or bronze to blend or anything, just moisturise, neaten my eyebrows, mascara on, which doesn't need good light. I used to have good light in the bathroom and a big mirror and a plug socket just outside in the hall that meant everything reached well enough. I have never had room for a dressing table but would love one some day!

AnotherMurkyDay · 28/02/2020 19:25

I mean technically I did but had to prioritise home office as working from home so had desk etc. Instead of place designated for getting ready

Parker231 · 28/02/2020 19:26

Never had a dressing table - get ready in the bathroom - good natural light and storage.

thenightsky · 28/02/2020 19:28

I have a run of 4 Ikea Malm six drawer units along one wall. The one that is under the window has my make-up in the top drawer and an angle poise lamp and a chair. That is my 'dressing table'.

Quicknamechange2020 · 28/02/2020 19:28

Bed!

Pipandmum · 28/02/2020 19:30

Bathroom.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 28/02/2020 19:30

Get ready for what?

I get dressed in the bedroom.

ThunderPython · 28/02/2020 19:30

Same!

sit in front of the window to do my makeup as I like the natural light. I have my Makeup bag and a boots illuminating mirror on the window sill.

MrsFogi · 28/02/2020 19:32

I have always been mystified and intrigued by what on earth women do at a dressing table? I cannot imagine doing my make up anywhere other than the bathroom - the carpet in my bedroom would be ruined within a week. Am I missing something? Clearly I look an unkempt mess!

notdoingitanymore · 28/02/2020 19:35

Bathroom, or mirror on ironing board in living room if special occasion that multiple family members need the bathroom for its prime purpose - the light in my bedroom is conductive for sleeping not makeup!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 28/02/2020 19:38

Get ready for what?

The day? Leaving the house? Dinner out with friends? The theatre?

I have always been mystified and intrigued by what on earth women do at a dressing table?

Really? Confused it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to work it out.

ffswhatnext · 28/02/2020 19:39

Get ready for what?
Brush sit and brush your hair a hundred times?
Put the rollers in your hair before you go to bed?
Stand somewhere else to flash the neighbours getting dressed instead of the table?

CherryPavlova · 28/02/2020 19:42

I dislike dressing tables. Shower in bathroom then use the dressing area for drying off and make-up and hair.

myidentitymycrisis · 28/02/2020 19:46

in the bathroom,

I’ve never done my make up in the bathroom! I prefer to sit down to do it and don’t have a chair in my bathroom. Plus I dry and style my hair at my dressing table, in front of the mirror.
Interesting question OP as I had a built in dressing table that I hated (inherited it when we moved into this house), and randomly decided last night to rip it out! Just trying to decide whether to buy something to directly replace it or to rearrange everything in the bedroom, potentially without a dressing table...

AlannaOfTrebond · 28/02/2020 19:50

I have a dressing table now, which I use for, shock horror, sitting at and doing my hair and makeup as well as storing the stuff to do my hair and make up with. (And it's in a dressing room). I'm mystified as to how on earth would I ruin a carpet by sitting at a table doing my makeup?

In previous houses I've generally used the full length mirror in the bedroom (usually sat on the floor) or a mirror on a shelf at head height.

Not keen on doing my makeup in the bathroom because if I've just had a shower it's like standing in a sauna.

HoffiCoffi13 · 28/02/2020 19:51

Yeah I don’t get the carpet thing either... make up stays on the dressing table, not on the carpet. My bedroom carpet is cream and the area around the dressing table doesn’t look any different to the rest!

ChicChicChicChiclana · 28/02/2020 19:51

I still need to know, get ready for what? For me get ready for the day is get clean and get clothes on Grin.

I shower in the bathroom. I get dressed in the bedroom. I have one of those mirrors on a stand on top of my chest of drawers so I'll look in that to put on my moisturiser. If I'm wearing makeup I might do it there, or standing in front of the living room wall mirror, or the mirror in the hall, or using a hand-held mirror in the kitchen, or the bathroom if I can be confident no one else needs it - all depends where the light is best.

FrogsFrogs · 28/02/2020 19:53

Dry hair sitting on bed with one of those stand free full length mirrors you can move easily

Makeup at mirror on wall in lounge where there's lots of natural light

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 28/02/2020 19:56

For me get ready for the day is get clean and get clothes on

Yeah, but when you go outside, and walk around where other people are, you do see that some of them have make up on and styled hair dos? Dont you?
