what to wear with velvet top?

I have just bought a black velvet top with little sparkles in, and I need some sort of (black) trousers to wear with it.

It's quite short - comes to my waist/hips but not below, so anything like leggings is out as they're too form fitting (I'm a 16/18).

I have black jeggings, but they look very casual with it because of the fabric and are not quite deep enough black now that they've been washed a few times.
Or I have smart suit-type trousers, but they're almost the other direction, too formal.
I need something in between. But what? Black velvet it turns out is so dark that it's hard to get something to look right with it.

It's just for a casual Christmas day or going out, but not to look really dressed up. What's casual-ish in style, but not too casual in fabric that it looks odd next to velvet, and will look properly dark black against velvet?

What's the shape of it? I think blacker velvet looks nice with blue jeans

duckyolucky · 11/12/2019 23:03

nicer than black bottoms if that makes sense

milliefiori · 11/12/2019 23:04

I'd wear dark blue jeans with high ankle boots. Mismatched blacks don't look good.

Bimbleberries · 11/12/2019 23:06

It's quite baggy/gathered, with a tie at the side, which I thought would help cover my big stomach, but I'm not sure it will. I'm fairly short, too.

I might have blue jeans somewhere. But they're not anything special. I wear the black jeans/jeggings (fat face style) almost every day with jumpers/tunics, so dressing up in much else is quite new to me.

hmm, maybe I need to consider things other than black then.

Not sure where to even look for dark jeans in my size/shape, which is short and fat.

I don't have to keep the top, but I did like it. didn't think it would be so hard to make an outfit out of though.

what about dark blue skinny's if that's what your comfortable with

duckyolucky · 11/12/2019 23:12

Most shops will do size 16/18 in blue denim

KellyHall · 11/12/2019 23:14

Dark blue jeans I reckon. If you're wearing heels it won't matter that you're short. Apparently straight leg is more flattering in you're larger, and get ones with bigger back pockets as small back pockets make your bum appear wider.

ReeRi · 11/12/2019 23:17

I think black is ok OP. I would wear black with black and sometimes don’t fancy blue tbh

I think dark blue would look fine although personally I don’t think blue jeans look v smart or dressy but don’t think you shouldn’t wear black just because some PPs think so

Having said that I think it would help to see the top!

ReeRi · 11/12/2019 23:17

PS I also like the dark grey jeans with black, probably my favourite

duckyolucky · 11/12/2019 23:20

greys a good shout

Bimbleberries · 11/12/2019 23:23

Thanks, will have a look in John Lewis tomorrow for a variety of brands, or there's the usual high street stuff. The top was from phase eight, but I'm going to see if there is a smaller size that is less baggy, but I don't want it any shorter for sure. I don't know what shape trousers is any good on me really, would rather not buy more as the top was most my budget for a while, but no point keeping it if I can't find something to wear it with!

Grey is an interesting thought, but would they look like over washed black, or is there a smarter sort of look?

No, a somewhat opaque (?) grey than looking like washed out black. I tend to wear skinny jeans

These are just an example of colour:

Personally I just don’t wear blue jeans that much but I’m in the minority probably. I most often wear grey jeans

CrotchetyQuaver · 11/12/2019 23:42

I would wear that with my black jeggings and black suede knee length flat boots.

thenightsky · 11/12/2019 23:46

I always wear grey jeans with black tops as I don't like too much black together.

Bimbleberries · 12/12/2019 06:47

Thanks, yes I can see I'd get more use out of grey too, if I can find some that don't look washed out. I'll see if there's any in the shops- I think I need to try jeans on rather than online.

I have found grey jeans in Next that definitely look grey, rather than washed out black.

CountFosco · 12/12/2019 06:56

If you are short then M&S is a good place to look on the high street since they always have petite trousers and jeans in stock and have a reasonable range of shapes. I'd wear navy trousers or dark indigo jeans but like the idea of grey as well.

MairzyDoats · 12/12/2019 06:59

Next do good 'definitely grey not black' jeans.

Bimbleberries · 12/12/2019 07:12

oh thanks, I can get to both M&S and Next easily.

The top is from Phase 8, and in the photo on the site, they show it with matching sparkly velvet trousers, which as an outfit would look ridiculous on me! They also have a tall thin model, and something about the way they've arranged the top makes it look more fitted, whereas in reality it's a bit gathered to have the tie at the waist, which makes it a bit loose/baggy. So it's not very reflective of the actual style as it looks on me. It's called 'sissy glitter top'

OP posts:
Bimbleberries · 12/12/2019 07:13

The sparkles are multi-coloured, but very small, and all over, which doesn't really show as much in the photo either.

TigerJoy · 12/12/2019 07:23

Do they need to be trousers you wear with it?

GinasGirl · 12/12/2019 07:31

Do you love the top? It sounds like you're having to work to find something to wear with it. I've done this myself before, trying lots of different options and then coming to the conclusion it just wasn't for me, even though I really wanted to like it.
I'd want something that fit really well, was flattering and that could go with a couple of different pieces already in my wardrobe.
