what to wear with velvet top?

I have just bought a black velvet top with little sparkles in, and I need some sort of (black) trousers to wear with it.

It's quite short - comes to my waist/hips but not below, so anything like leggings is out as they're too form fitting (I'm a 16/18).

I have black jeggings, but they look very casual with it because of the fabric and are not quite deep enough black now that they've been washed a few times.
Or I have smart suit-type trousers, but they're almost the other direction, too formal.
I need something in between. But what? Black velvet it turns out is so dark that it's hard to get something to look right with it.

It's just for a casual Christmas day or going out, but not to look really dressed up. What's casual-ish in style, but not too casual in fabric that it looks odd next to velvet, and will look properly dark black against velvet?

I don't know. It could still go back - I ordered online. I do really like it though, and want to be able to wear it. Just didn't know that I couldn't just wear it with my normal black Fat Face style jeans or suit trousers, as neither looked quite right, and I thought they would. it's lovely fabric and very small sparkles, which I liked as I'm not a sparkly person and wouldn't normally have anything like this. I thought it would be useful if I ever needed a Christmas 'going out' top or something in the future.

Doesn't have to be trousers, no. I could wear a skirt and boots, if I could find something suitable. But trousers are certainly easier.

I'm not very confident with clothes, and don't have much else anyway. I'm not averse to buying something new that would be useful, if what I had didn't work. I spent most of my budget on the top as I loved the fabric, so have to be frugal with anything else.

It wasn't quite what I expected - more loose/baggy (though the smaller size might help) and shorter. But really nice fabric, so I want to like it, and I want it to look good on me. But those things might not be enough! I don't ever look particularly good, given size/shape/general looks, so I always have to bear in mind when I'm deciding on something, not whether it looks objectively 'good', but whether it looks 'better than what I have' or 'better than whatever else I might find', which does tend to complicate things a bit!

A pleated knee length satin skirt.

justdeckingthehalls1 · 12/12/2019 07:53

Black leather trousers/jeans?

I'd wear it with a satin midi skirt myself but not sure if you're considering skirts?

duckyolucky · 12/12/2019 08:16

Do you have a picture of the top, if it's loose & longer than waist length it won't look right with a pleated skirt

duckyolucky · 12/12/2019 08:18

a straighter shape skirt may work?

Bimbleberries · 12/12/2019 08:35

I don't think leather or coated would suit me, or would get much other use. I have very boring wardrobe normally and would feel self-conscious in most things. Straight skirt possibly. Pleats I think would be bad on someone short and fat. It's only waist length, not much longer really. Mostly just for casual things like maybe christmas day or if I went out at some point - normally I don't go out so I don't know what to wear, but then if I do get the chance to go out, I don't have anything, so when I saw it, I thought maybe it would be a useful thing to have. If I keep it.

the picture online doesn't really show the loose fit (in my size/shape) as I think they've adjusted it to look more form fitting, and of course the model is size 8 or whatever. It also looks like a jumpsuit in the photo as she wears it with matching trousers with glitter, so it's not easy to tell how long it is. It's on the phase 8 website, called 'sissy glitter top'

(think quiet, boring, short, fat 50-year old who normally wears white stuff style overgrown toddler tunics who is already being daring with a few sparkles!!)

I like the top OP and in a weird way I kind of like to with the matching trousers!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 12/12/2019 13:04

I think either skinny jeans/trousers/jeggings in either grey or a plum/dark berry colour would look good, or else a pleated skirt (but you might get more wear out of the jeans/trousers)

hey hun, neon green sounds fabulous, and I'll deffo try that as soon as I'm ready for a new baby, still trying to lose the weight from when little Champers was born xx

In the meantime, I've now ordered two pair of grey trousers to see.. Had no luck in the shops this morning, but I've ordered some jeggings like my black ones, but 'charcoal' (may not be dark enough, we'll see) and some other skinny trousers from white stuff, but they might be too soft/form fitting for my shape. If not, maybe I'll try the plum colour idea, hadn't thought of anything like that really, was only thinking black, but actually I can see that perhaps could work.
A short-ish plain skirt of some sort, denim style but maybe grey or plum, might be a possibility. I only have cord skirts now and I don't think those are right.

otherwise, might have to send it back. Or keep it for next year and find something in the meantime.

The trousers look OK on the model, but on me, all that velvet and all the sparkles, would look very very bad.

As a very petite person i d say try M&S, their petite jeans jeggings are right length.I recently bought a pair of jeggings there in a kind of black self coloured lizard print, which i think might look good. They also had self black leopard pair, and others that might work.Their jeggings have loads of lycra in and are very comfy to wear.

Thestrangestthing · 12/12/2019 16:07

Black coated, leggings or jeans. A bit like leather look but not quite.

Oblomov19 · 12/12/2019 16:15

I like a black top with a skirt.
I'm wearing a black velvety top now, with this Sainsbury's skirt:

what to wear with velvet top?
Ljcoolgran · 12/12/2019 16:28

How about wide palazzo type pants in a black crepe fabric??

Whitney168 · 12/12/2019 19:18

Have you got time to re-dye your jeggings to solid black, if they’re right otherwise?

Bimbleberries · 12/12/2019 19:29

Yes ,as I don't have to wear it for any particular occasion, just wanted to make sure i have something decent to wear it with before I decide to keep it. I'm not sure jeggings are right - they are quite casual looking, whereas the top looks smart - but I could get them blacker (or newer) ones if it looked at least OK.

Palazzo pants might be OK if the smaller top fits better; right now I think I'd look swamped.

Skirts also good, but I think the sparkles are multi-coloured and prominent enough that it would have to be plain black, rather than patterned - or maybe the plum colour that someone mentioned above.

thanks for all the ideas!
