I’m a 5ft 3in hourglass and am clueless when it comes to dressing casually.

Would this cardigan work with these jeans?

Cardigan - www.johnlewis.com/mint-velvet-ribbed-biker-cardigan-dark-grey/p4761681?size=12

Jeans - www.johnlewis.com/levi's-721-high-rise-skinny-jeans/black/p4161200?size=w30-l30

Thanks in advance

Just bought this www.dorothyperkins.com/en/dpuk/product/dresses-5699972/womens-dresses-5686813/petite-multi-colour-floral-print-fit-and-flare-dress-9260980

Bargain and very flattering (5ft2, size 12)

slipperyeel · 08/11/2019 22:58

And I find topshop Joni jeans the most flattering

happytobemrsg · 08/11/2019 23:01

I have a similar mint velvet biker cardigan but a short version. The front has slight waterfall drape and it really Slims down my boobs and balances out my shape. Size 8-10 hourglass as well. I think the one you have linked would look good too OP

I do casual really well, culottes with boots and a warm cashmere jumper with v neck look good and will keep you warm.

I also prefer chunky boots, no idea why, it must be to do with balancing out of proportions

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 09/11/2019 06:04

I have two Bombshell dresses. They’re fab to wear. So comfortable too.

They do have sales so worth signing up.

freddy45 · 09/11/2019 07:09

The jumpsuit comment is useful. I like them on me if I can find petite ones so the waist hits correctly.

floffel · 09/11/2019 07:29

Thank you all so much - all these ideas have really opened my eyes. I have this in my basket too following @shitpark advice about black hats

I enjoyed reading this. I'm a 5'7" hourglass. I hate belts so I sometimes add darts to items to bring the fabric in at the waist. The thing I find is that really casual wear, like when I'm walking the dogs, is a problem. I was young in the 90s when grunge clothes were loose and layered. That's so comfortable, I don't always want to tuck to show my waist!

As for chunky shoes, maybe that is true if you're petite but my ankles are slim and my feet are a nice shape so I prefer to show them off a bit!

randominternetperson · 09/11/2019 12:15

I absolutely swear by topshop Jamie jeans - high waist and flattering fit.

https://www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/product/jeans-6877054/black-jamie-jeans-8112464?&cmpid=ppcplaaUKip&utmmmedium=cpc&tsrc=vdna&istCompanyId=38aa0d7f-6514-4cb3-bbdc-df0d32d48b7f&istFeedId=a21748eb-2fe6-47b2-bb85-98b6bd5b1f3f&istItemId=wllwmpxqa&istBid=tztx&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIq8LNHc5QIVArTtCh1P5QO1EAQYASABEgLyTvDD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I also love culottes and jumpsuits - especially this as it has a bit of a waist:

What tops do people wear with jeans? I am a 32f/g - do I always need to go for scoop or V neck tops? I feel like I look matronly in everything...

CountFosco · 09/11/2019 14:09

The chunky boots comment is so true actually.

As far as cardigans go Boden do excellent cropped cardigans that are very flattering.

happytobemrsg · 09/11/2019 14:15

@randominternetperson I’m a 32E & v necks & long necklaces always look best on me. Lovely dungarees

Meathmum · 09/11/2019 14:50

Top shop Jamie didnt agree with me , size 12 felt like size 10. I like New Look Frankie jeans, Bought Freddie jeans mad price not worth it
I love cullottes with tight high ankle boots & fitted top , very flattering. Like you all im very booby that can make you look untidy i think

confusedmaybe · 09/11/2019 15:29

I'm 28g and stick with v neck and scooped tops. I would love to wear a blousey type top but I look awful in them. I always buy jeans with Lycra, but wish I could get my arse into 100% cotton jeans, unfortunately never found any that fit properly. It really upsets me that skinnies are always threatening to be over.

Does anyone else have a problem with wide belts? I can not make them look right, they seem to end under my boobs. Not a look I want.

confusedmaybe · 09/11/2019 15:31

I do have some regular tops that just have a normal neckline. But only wear them if I'm wearing a jersey blazer.

Meathmum · 09/11/2019 16:48

@confusedmaybe same as, look like the matron from carry on films

BatshitCrazyWoman · 09/11/2019 17:19

I'm an 8-10 5ft 3 hourglass. In general I choose clothes that have a slim, pared down silhouette. So:-

No founces, frills ruffles or lace.
Nothing A line. Ever.
No 'fit and flare' shaped dresses.
No florals.

I feel.suffocated in high waisted jeans/trousers so mid-rise only for me.

V or scoop necks are best on me, and agree about the long necklace thing.

happytobemrsg · 09/11/2019 18:06

@confusedmaybe I bought a 3cm belt to cinch in my waist when wearing long dresses. It’s from Gucci. It works really well & in proportion.

happytobemrsg · 09/11/2019 18:13

^^ it’s from the men’s collection. The women’s belt was too wide

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 09/11/2019 22:05

I’d love to be able to wear a shirt now and again. I used to have one from M&S years ago that was cotton with a good dose of Lycra, and it fitted me well, but allowed me to still move. People always said how good I looked in it.

I bought a white one from them with the extra (chest) buttons but it looks cheap and ‘waitressy’.
Any ideas where I can look?

Re casual clothing - it’s soooo much cheaper to make boxy stuff which suits a lot of people.
I have a FatFace and a White Stuff sweatshirt which are both cut on a Princess line, which goes in and out a bit. Hardly cutting edge, but ok for dog walking and doesn’t turn me into a rectangle

floffel · 10/11/2019 09:00

John Lewis is torturing me - I stuck my details into their personal style edit and this popped up - I love it but how on earth will this work on an hourglass? It doesn’t have a v-neck or scoop neck Can someone explain?

@ByeByeMissAmericanPie - I’m glum about shirts too. Was looking at this but the reviews put me off. If anyone else has found shirts that work for hourglasses, I’m interested too
