Do you match your handbag to your outfit?

I just got told that this is now “passé” and lazy styling.
I am clearly passé. Grin

Do you match your handbag to something in your outfit? If not, how do you choose what to accessorise with bag wise, just whatever you fancy?

Genuinely curious. I’m a bit of a colour coordination fiend anyway so it’s always just been my natural choice that makes me feel put together

No I’m too lazy to keep changing bags

ShirleyPhallus · 26/10/2019 21:21

I’ve got about 4-5 bags I use on rotation - a long champ, a mulberry, a few smaller bags. So yes I do rotate them but deliberately not to “match” them to each outfit - ie I wouldn’t use my plum bag if I was wearing a plum top. I hate the matchy matchy look which I think is definitely passé

Bellasblankexpression · 26/10/2019 21:24

So shirley how do you style the bags. Just a colour that doesn’t directly match a colour in your outfit?

Yep, so for me, the plum bag goes with blue jeans, trainers, white top and trench coat. if I wore a plum top, I’d use a black quilted handbag with gold chain strap.

Long champ is good to chuck everything in to and a good casual bag

Lobsterquadrille2 · 26/10/2019 22:01

I have one bag ....

fluffygal · 26/10/2019 22:08

I can't be bothered to change bags, I have a work bag that is full of crap, a smaller bag for non work, lots and lots of smarter bags in the wardrobe just in case but never used, and I prefer to just use my coat pockets if I can get away with it!

orangeteal · 27/10/2019 09:04

Black back pack with brown trim for work, goes with everything, I hate using handbags so don't own one let alone multiple!

MoltonSilver · 27/10/2019 09:20

I do change handbags to suit an outfit but it doesn't necessarily match in the traditional sense, it's just whichever one feels right at the time. No hard and fast rules.

homemadecommunistrussia · 27/10/2019 09:35

Well a bit, but not to completely match, I have light coloured bags I use in the summer and black ones for winter time. To me a big black strap across a pale blue blouse doesn't look right, maybe I wouldn't bother if I didn't use cross body type bags.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 27/10/2019 09:42

I more match as to the smartness /style of bag than colour matching as such - although this is probably because I dont have a lot of nice bags!

This comes from something someone said about designer bags always looking fake if it didn't look appropriate for your outfit - think a structured prada bag carried with a jeans and slouchy jumper outfit, whereas same bag with a suit would look right.

The bag obsessed ladies on here do make me want to up my handbag game though!

SapphireSeptember · 27/10/2019 09:42

Sometimes, if I'm using one of my Ruby Gloom bags and wearing black or red, then I match. I'm currently using a pink and cream cross body bag with flowers and a picture of Big Ben on one side, that doesn't really go with anything I wear, but I like it. (I suppose it's an interesting contrast.) I have a bigger more handbag style ones with a similar design (except it's the Eiffle tower, one side is brown and it has pink straps) that I don't really use anymore. It's quite big and I cram so much stuff into it got too heavy! And then I have the black canvas satchel I use when travelling.

Swiftier · 27/10/2019 10:34

I change bags to suit the outfit but wouldn’t ‘match’. Like @ShirleyPhallus says, I wouldn’t match the colours in my outfit to the bag. But I’d make it complimentary, so I might not wear a big black bag with a light summer outfit etc. At the moment I’m mostly wearing grey/beige boxy bag with most of my autumn outfits (navy, orange etc).

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/10/2019 10:38

My work bag always stays the same regardless of what I wear to work. I carry too much stuff to change my bag and I'm sure I'd forget something important if I kept moving bags.

Same applies to my gym bag.

But away from work and the gym, I change my bags constantly. Literally every time I leave the house, I decide what bag to use for that 'excursion'. But then I travel fairly light (purse, keys, mobile, lip balm, headphones are my essentials) so it's easy. I have a lot of bags (too many to count).

I don't colour match as I have a pathological hatred of matchy-matchy (you will never see me with matching shoes and bag) but I do take colour into consideration. I make my decision based on a whole series of factors. I look at weather conditions and the style of my outfit. If I'm very casual, I need a casual bag etc. If the weather's bad, I need a waterproof/water-resistant bag. If I'm planning to do a lot of walking, I'll probably look at leather rucksacks as they're more comfortable. If I'll be out a long time, I'll pick a bag that I can fit my water bottle in, and maybe be an umbrella. Do I need something big because I'm planning to do some shopping? Or am I literally popping out and all I need is my debit card, keys and phone. It takes me seconds to decide - it took me much longer to write all this down. Blush

CaptainTurdseye · 27/10/2019 10:42

I have one bag, this is like the how many coats have you got thread- yes you can have bags but why would you need more than one when you can only use one at a time. Disclaimer- I’m an autistic so find all things materialistic odd and unnecessary 😂

ReginaGeorgeous · 27/10/2019 10:43

I change my bag to suit my outfit, but I'm a handbag lover and have several decent ones. Today I'm wearing a black and white striped t shirt, faded black skinnies, a grey chunky cardi and black Chelsea boots. I'll use my pale pink and black Kate Spade cross body bag with it.

getyourgrooveback · 27/10/2019 10:49

Yes I do so I'm clearly passé.

I have a real thing about 'hardware' so I can't wear a handbag with a gold lock/chain/zip/etc with a belt that has a silver buckle Blush

I change my handbag most days but I'm lucky to have a big collection Grin

WhoKnewBeefStew · 27/10/2019 10:49

I dint have enough bags to do this. But I am trying to save up for bags That suit occasions rather than style. I've bought a Chloe, in dusty blue for a small every day, a small black mulberry for 'going out' and I'm saving up for a tote 👜 of some description (I haven't decided which one yet)

wherearethey · 27/10/2019 10:56

I wear nothing but black so everything matches everything Wink

feelingsinister · 27/10/2019 10:56

I don't ever match my bags by colour but then most of my bags are brown leather which go with everything. I do need a black going out bag though.

I'll match the bag to what I am doing. Work bags, cross body bag, backpack etc

Colour matching like that really is out of date.

cometothinkofit · 27/10/2019 11:02

I have one handbag, a black one. That's it. Problem solved.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/10/2019 11:04

Those people that just have one handbag / rucksack they use everything for - what do you do if you go to a summer wedding? Do you just use that same bag? Or out for dinner or a night out?

CaptainTurdseye · 27/10/2019 11:10

Yes same bag night out, wedding, dinner, shopping, school run etc Don’t understand why you’d need another.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/10/2019 11:13

I just couldn’t imagine any bag which goes with absolutely all of those outfits - wearing a light coloured dress for a summer wedding with a large black bag would really ruin the look IMO, but appreciate not everyone is the same!

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 27/10/2019 11:21

Match style and size rather than colour. I have a soft brown suede cross body bag for everyday which goes with most things. For a more business like look (I rarely need this) I have a plain black leather short handled bag. Small black satin one on a chain for nights out. I prefer going out with no bag at all though, key, phone and cardholder in pockets are my favourite option. I also have a couple of larger bright fabric shoulder bags for times when I want to carry more stuff.

Iamblossom · 27/10/2019 11:29

I have quite a few work bags and I do use them according to what I am wearing. I use the black one the most as it goes with everything but I have a tan one and a navy blue one, which I do tend to match with my shoes. I also have a lovely red one. Both oversized shopper types.

I used my red one this week when I wore a black and white hounds tooth dress with a red turtle neck.

Outside of work I use this www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07N6JZLHK?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Goes with everything and big enough for essentials.

I do have a zillion bags I don't use very often including oversized leopard print one, a huge faux leather plum one and a mulberry.
