Do you match your handbag to your outfit?

I just got told that this is now “passé” and lazy styling.
I am clearly passé. Grin

Do you match your handbag to something in your outfit? If not, how do you choose what to accessorise with bag wise, just whatever you fancy?

Genuinely curious. I’m a bit of a colour coordination fiend anyway so it’s always just been my natural choice that makes me feel put together

I have one bag for everyday use. If I'm going out for the evening I will try to match my bag to my outfit if possible. I have three evening bags - navy, black and cream - so usually one of them will match my outfit. They're much smaller than my everyday bag, which holds everything but the kitchen sink - just big enough for purse and phone.

TattiePants · 27/10/2019 14:35

I'm another one that doesn't match by colour but more by style / occasion. I have quite a few bags but I'm quite lazy when it comes to swapping them round so most days I use a slouchy burgundy Coach bag.

Just saw these photos and I wanted to posted here 😂

A good style tip is to wear a contrasting colour to your outfit/coat. Looks wonderful in photos.

I have one work bag (a tote), one non work bag (mimi black backpack) & a going out bag (tortoiseshell chain shoulder bag). That’s it!!

ShirleyPhallus · 27/10/2019 15:00

Gosh @thisenglishlife, what’s going on in that photo is the reason I’d never wear coloured tights as nothing looks good with them. Navy shoes should go with bare legs or don’t wear them at all.

A pet peeve is “matching in 3s” where someone matches their shoes to handbag and usually another accessory - a hat or chunky necklace. It looks so naff.

Bellasblankexpression · 27/10/2019 15:12

This is really interesting.

I guess when i say I colour co-ordinate, I don't match the exact shade but if I was wearing tan boots I wouldn't wear a black bag IYSWIM.

I think my issue is my bags all all quite similar style wise, so I probably need to branch out a little bit so I have a choice of styles.

I choose my bags (from my wardrobe) depending on what I need to carry in them and from the shops based on whether I like them (& need). Everything goes because I only ever wear black, grey or navy pretty much. I use a lot of pocket / pouches so I move those around between bags. I then probably focus more on material than colour - I live by the sea/countryside so I tend to use a basket in summer. I would definitely wouldn’t think twice about using a black cross body bag whilst wearing tan boots in an urban environment. But I probably wouldn’t wear a black leather cross body bag on the beach no matter what shoes I had on.

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/10/2019 15:25

If I'm going out then yes, for every day, no, just whichever is most practical.
I do have a lot of bags though.

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/10/2019 15:29

A good style tip is to wear a contrasting colour to your outfit/coat.

Unless you're fashion forward, in which case head to toe in the same colour (as long as it's not black or white) is very 'in'.

Buyitinbamboo · 27/10/2019 16:06

Not so much by outfit but I have a black bag I tend to wear in winter, when I usually wear dark clothes, tan for the summer, a grey/beige structured bag that I tend to use for things like a nice lunch/informal dinner and a navy clutch for nicer events.

Aderyn19 · 27/10/2019 16:48

I kind of do. I have a thing about hardware on bags too - I like silver hardware if I am wearing grey boots or trainers and silver jewellery. Unfortunately most bags seem to come with gold hardware.
I like a black or oxblood bag in winter and lighter ones in summer and although I don't match them to outfits, I do like some coordination. So as pp said, no heavy, dark colour bag with light clothing or obvious gold and silver clashes.

Doobigetta · 27/10/2019 17:28

I do a bit- I won’t use a brown bag with black shoes or vice versa, and I won’t use a black bag at all in summer, it doesn’t look right. I mostly wear either navy or grey, and my two main bags are a blueish grey and deep chestnut, either of which works. I’d only use a black bag with a black outfit, which I don’t wear all that often.

Oldraver · 27/10/2019 19:18

I sometimes match my bag to my coat outfit or shoes and do have a bag to match my car

JoJoSM2 · 27/10/2019 19:51

I match. For events, I go with metallic bags to keep it simple. Day to day, I've got 3 bucket bags (black, navy, brown&burgundy) and wear whichever goes with my outfit.

MontyBowJangles · 27/10/2019 23:51

My Mum always taught me to match the colour of my handbag to my shoes... Guess it'd be old fashioned now.

But I do have a pair of nude heels and a matching nude clutch, ditto patent black. If I'm going out in the evening I have a few small handbags with long chains in either silver/gold/black quilted effect etc to kinda go with whatever shoes I'm wearing. So if I had silver strappy sandals on in the summer the silver bag, jeans and black boots in winter the black.

Day to day I have a smart faux leather backpack style handbag...couldn't be doing with changing it daily (as it's like the tardis).

RiskIt4Biscuit · 28/10/2019 01:00

It depends.

I usually don’t match anything to my bag, but just go for a bag that I think will look good with the outfit and that has the right size or shape.

That said, I do have certain items of clothing that are a bit of a statement in themselves (Faux leather leggings or studded brogues) that I will wear a bag that matches.

I also have bags that I only use during summer (such as a large coral coloured tote bag) and I tend not to use my larger darker bags during summer.

Pinkbonbon · 28/10/2019 01:11

Sometimes, sometimes the style.

I matched a bright pink bag with bright pink lipstick the other day for a date. The rest of the outfit was black n white.

I've been known to match my green converse shoes and a green handbag too. So it tends to be my accessories that match my bag more than the outfit itself persay.

OmniversalsTapdancingTadpole · 28/10/2019 15:17

I always co-ordinate my bags to go with my outfit (different colour leather bags), also bags for different activity (gym, hiking, matial arts, painting).

But i always match accessories, jewelry, underwear and outerwear with the outfit that i am wearing. Would feel odd not too!

Very aware that i am stuck in a timewarp of the 1940's!

hammeringinmyhead · 28/10/2019 15:30

Never. I get a bag out for about a month or so then switch. Right now I'm using a burnt orange Whistles mini backpack which I'm wearing with a camel wool coat, skirt and burgundy ankle boots today and wore with a navy cardigan and jeans combo yesterday.

However I do struggle with black bags. When worn with black coat and boots, it all looks a bit heavy, but black bags look weird with tan boots or summer outfits. I tend to buy khaki, burgundy, chestnut, forest green type colours.

XingMing · 28/10/2019 17:02

My favourite bag is an £18 cheapie cross body with two mini pouches linked by the strap. It has black/burgundy and a navy/ecru components and I just decide what works depending on what I'm wearing, but it tends to be the same colour facing out as my outfit. So navy with jeans, or black with monochrome, but the ecru in summer. The burgundy face gets the least love.

OmniversalsTapdancingTadpole · 28/10/2019 17:18

Ah yes to winter and summer bag colours 👍

PixieDustt · 28/10/2019 17:53

Yes all the time! Constantly changing bags.
I have a weird little thing for my DS when he's wearing socks they have to match his outfit Halloween Blush
