What kind of tights with this dress for posh evening do?

I’ve bought this dress for a posh evening do in a few weeks.

I have silver slingback cone heels that I will wear with it.

But what tights?

I can’t go bare legged, my legs are horribly pale and scrawny and I just prefer some coverage.

Something patterned/lacy? In navy, I guess...? Or black...?

Or fishnet? If so nude or black?

Or just plain sheer black tights?

Help!

Nude fishnet, anything dark will look like Minnie Mouse.

peachypetite · 02/10/2019 17:51

Sling backs and tights are not a good combination.

HepburnKNotA · 02/10/2019 17:55

Um, right ok... they’re not sandal sling backs, they’re closed toe... if that makes any difference?

I will buy some nude fishnets and try them.

If slingbacks (even closed toe) are bad idea with tights, what do I do instead? I have some pale grey courts but feel they are too formal/workwear style for the dress.

Don’t want to buy new shoes!!

Oh I also have navy suede kitten heels but they’re also a very formal style. Safe I guess but a bit dull.

Slingbacks can just be a bit slippy with tights - M&S do slip resistant tights though which stop that problem, or if you use the gel party foot full length inserts it also stops you sliding

Alsohuman · 02/10/2019 18:03

Fishnets are OK with sling backs, they don’t slip like ordinary tights.

HepburnKNotA · 02/10/2019 18:24

Ah, I see... I do rarely ‘do’ a smart party dress with heels that I’m not at all familiar with heels/tights/dress combos!!

Thanks everyone, will try nude fishnets and maybe post a pic for opinions... if I’m brave enough!!

Tights and sling backs are fine. I’d just go nude.

HepburnKNotA · 02/10/2019 18:31

PullingMySocksUp, do you mean just plain nude tights? As in, not fishnet? I’m rubbish at getting the right shade for me but will investigate. Thank you!

I would, but see what other people think. I haven’t been to a dressy evening thing for ages.

georgialondon · 02/10/2019 18:36

Nude, nude, nude!

TheJoxter · 02/10/2019 18:39

Definitely nude

SymbollocksInteractionism · 02/10/2019 19:43

Black fishnets would be fine

Alsohuman · 02/10/2019 19:47

Black fishnets would be fine Not with silver shoes, unless the hooker look is what OP’s after.

LemonPrism · 02/10/2019 20:32

Fishnets are bloody awful, wear nude or black tights.

LemonPrism · 02/10/2019 20:33

All fishnets make women look like cheap prostitutes tbh. I don't know a single person who would wear them other than at Halloween.

MoltonSilver · 02/10/2019 20:54

Plain old nude tights if it's a posh do. Fishnets will cheapen it.

Nacreous · 02/10/2019 20:56

Plain nude tights, not fishnets.

BubblesBuddy · 02/10/2019 20:59

You can 7 denier. They are very light and are fine with sling backs. I think most people won’t look at your legs in any detail, so let the dress do the talking. Do you ever remember what shoes actresses wear on the Red Carpet? Or what they have on their legs? No. Probably not. The dress and accessories are what’s important but pull the look together by having understated legs!

Johntorrodeismydad · 02/10/2019 21:01

Plain nude, not fishnets of any kind.

HepburnKNotA · 03/10/2019 09:18

Right, I'm going to get a couple of options for plain nude tights, the non-slip kind if I can. Hadn't thought of something as light as 7 denier, Bubbles, that sounds a good call. I'm just hopeless with tights, the only thing I ever wear are black opaques and when those aren't called for I have no idea what I'm doing!!

Thanks everyone!

Tights with sling backs are a no no. So if you must do it then definitely the sheerest nude as pp suggested.
Or you could try a leg make up?

HepburnKNotA · 03/10/2019 09:31

paradyning, leg makeup not a bad idea I guess... thank you!!

can I ask, what is the tights/slingback issue as far as you're concerned - the look or the slippage/safety angle? I'll be seated a lot of the evening so I don't know that slippage would be my main concern tbh but I might change my mind on that halfway through the evening if I ended up standing more than expected!!

But if people just generally think it LOOKS terrible, I'll avoid it! It's a very stylish evening do and I don't want to feel like I've committed a fashion faux pas...
