So much size 12 shaming around and it saddens me

Seriously, what is wrong with being a size 12 or 14? Read an article in a heauty column the other day where the journalist claims that she flung a jumper down and stormed out of the shop in tears because it was a size 10 and didn't fit. Is the idea of trying on a size 12 really that horrendous? Does she not realize that sizes differ between shops anyway?

I'm a size 12, which according to a lot of people would put me in the overweight category. They dont seem to consider different body shapes at all.

There is nothing wrong with being bigger than a size 16 or 18 either but when they see size 12s and 14s being shamed they must feel awful about themselves at times as well.

I buy what fits. Most shops I am a 12, some a 14, others a 10 or even 8. It gets on my nerves that I have to take lots of sizes into the changing room, and often puts me off of buying online. But I wouldn't get upset about a label, unless it was a signal to me I had put on weight. I am at a healthy weight so just get what fits.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 09:22

@PackingSoapAndWater I can get into a size 8 in certain styles from Cos & the like, however I certainly don't have a 26" waist these days so I would never say I was an 8.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 06/10/2019 09:27

I find it really depressing that there have been so many threads on here saying size 12 is overweight. It really isn’t, unless you are 3ft tall or something. I fit a variety of sizes top and bottom and I can’t be arsed to get that bothered about it personally. As long as my BMI (sorry Nurse unthread) stays healthy.

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 09:31

SinisterBumFacedCat but I am a size 12, and I am currently overweight. My BMI is 27.3. I’m 5ft 5. So not ‘depressing’, just fact.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 09:36

@SoyDora so you're about 11 & half stone, is your waist 30"?

Spied · 06/10/2019 09:37

5'3 size 14. Bmi around 27.
I feel I look fine. I feel a healthy size.

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 09:38

Not sure, haven’t measured my waist for a long time. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever been overweight, my third baby is 9 months old and I have let things slide.
I am most definitely a size 12 though.

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 09:40

I do have huge boobs, which account for a substantial part of my weight!

Heyboyo · 06/10/2019 09:41

I’m overweight at a size 12. I’m 5 ft 3. I’m a ten just now and I can pinch more than an inch right now. I shouldn’t really be a 10. It’s vanity sizing

ThatsLongFam · 06/10/2019 09:41

I’m 5’11 and size 12 correlates with me being at a really good weight, in terms of my health and how I look/feel.

If I lost enough weight to be a size 10 in most shops I’d be underweight and gaunt.

Body shape matters, too. I’m an hourglass. If you’ve got big tits and arse, even with a slim waist and that tummy, you need to size up.

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 09:43

I will have to lose 2 stone to get back into my standard size 10 clothes.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 06/10/2019 09:43

@eeksville it’s actually 80cm for women, your height is irrelevant because the issue is how much fat you have around your internal organs and you height isn’t really going to affect that. The vast majority of size 12 clothes in uk shops have an 80cm plus waist.

GrumpiestCat · 06/10/2019 09:45

Healthy BMI and I'm a happy 12-14. I got down to a ten for my wedding 20 years ago and everyone thought I had an eating disorder!

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 09:46

Anyway, I look and feel unhealthy at a size 12, my BMI says I’m unhealthy at a size 12, so I’d guess I’m probably unhealthy at a size 12.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 09:52

@Velveteenfruitbowl what's 80cm? a size 12? I've always based the 30" = a size 12 from jean sizing

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 09:53

eeksville the Levi jeans I’m currently wearing are a 30 inch waist so guessing that’s what I am.

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2019 09:56

When I was a 12, I was overweight. Confused

CarolDanvers · 06/10/2019 10:02

"Vanity sizing". Is it though? Or is it just more realistic sizing now we are in an age of a better and more accessible variety of nutritious foods? It's always said that junk food is to blame but I am not sure that's necessarily true. I'm not talking about being overweight but just bigger in general. I'm taller than my parents, my teens are taller than me and their Dad. Everyone focuses on fatter is it not just possible that we are just getting bigger in general and better nutrition means fulfilling growth potential plus less far people smoke know which we know causes underweight babies.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 10:03

your height is irrelevant because the issue is how much fat you have around your internal organs and you height isn’t really going to affect that.

I don't understand that, someone who's longer with a longer torso has the same internal fat as someone shorter? Diet also plays a role as one can be skinny fat.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 10:06

@SoyDora that proves my earlier point that height, frame & shape play a role. I'm 5ft 9 with big boobs & if I was 111/2 stone I wouldn't fit into 30" jeans, thats too heavy for me.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 06/10/2019 10:07

@eeksville it’s 20cm less than a metre.

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 10:07

Exactly eeksville. Which is why I was responding to the poster who said ‘a size 12 isn’t overweight’. We’re all different. At a size 12 I am overweight.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 10:08

sorry i'm confused @Velveteenfruitbowl what's 20cm less?

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 10:08

I have a very small frame, so all the extra weight on me is fat.
