In this thread at least one person has mentioned that black can't be worn with brights, whites, pastels, cream, brown, black, pinks, florals, stripes. Fuck me, I'm totally confused!

SapphireSeptember · 01/10/2019 21:32

I'm clearly very out of date (someone mentioned the Noughties, which sounds about right.) Unless I wear black all the time I'd have to give up half my wardrobe! I wear black and white, although usually white skirt with a black top. At least that doesn't make me look like a waitress...
Anyway, I'm going to carry on doing my own thing regardless.

SapphireSeptember · 01/10/2019 21:35

Actually, what is the general consensus on a black top with coloured/white skirt/trousers? Is that acceptable? Or a black dress with coloured tights/white dress with black tights? (The latter, although socks in my case, I always think looks a bit Victorian, especially if the dress/skirt is lacy and frilly.)

AnnaNimmity · 01/10/2019 22:04

I would do that in the summer @SapphireSeptember - white denim (skirt/jeans/shorts) with a black top. I'm not sure I would in the winter though.

I think anything Trinny says should be taken with a pinch of salt, given that it's over 20 years old. Mind you, what do I know? I don't wear navy with black and that rule is about 70 years old.

I think black with bright colours - primary or jewel colours is a bit 1980's. probably better with neutrals - grey, charcoal, taupe etc

happytobemrsg · 01/10/2019 22:55

I tend to wear black (jeans for example) with neutral tops (beige, off white, grey) or with earthy colours (khaki, browns). I don’t have a hard & fast rule though

Do people still dress in colours that suit them, their hair and skin tone etc? I look much better in red or green than I do in grey or taupe.

Yes of course (if they can figure them out). I think what people are saying is that black isn't necessarily the best colour to pair with your favourite colour.

My sister has a 'rule' which she is ridiculously proud of, where she refuses to wear black. At all. If she wears a green shirt, she will pair it with green trousers. This works for some people (think of Meghan Markle's beautiful green blouse with green leather skirt) but it certainly does not work for everyone. Its a look that ages my sister and makes her look frumpy.

As another poster pointed out, shoes play a big factor in wearing colour and colour/clashing patterns etc. In summer its not as big an issue as white trainers/clashing trainers/sandals go with everything but in winter, boots are primarily brown/black and a heavy black boot can kill an outfit.

OMGshefoundmeout · 02/10/2019 08:22

What else can you wear with black? If you do black with black you have the problem of them being slightly different shades/depths of black (which looks scruffy), quite apart from the issue of wearing all black making you look like a goth or an undertaker.

Love that white top with scallop edging and a scoop neck. Is it current @happytobemrsg Smile

SapphireSeptember · 02/10/2019 11:17

Unfortunately neutrals make me look washed out/ill, so that wouldn't work for me (a typical 'nude' lipstick makes me look ill, for instance.) I tend to stick to jewel tones, black and white because they suit me.

Anna I've never understood why there are different rules for summer and winter though. I wear pretty much the same all year round (if it gets really cold I wear a coat.)

MissLadyM · 02/10/2019 11:33

Just wear what you bloody want! Black and navy is chic and I often wear them together. I also love black & bright colours together. I'm often complimented on my style so I'll continue on my colourful path!

Divebar · 02/10/2019 12:26

Yeah once you start introducing rules it takes a lot of fun out of it.

happytobemrsg · 02/10/2019 17:51

Sorry woodhill it’s from George @ Asda years ago

happytobemrsg · 02/10/2019 17:54

@Standingatthedoor with the exception of some loungewear, I do tend to stick to my “colours”. I’m Autumn so lots of browns, beige & green. Dark grey also looks good on me. I wear black but always accessorise using colours from my palette & usually only on my bottom half. Having my colours done helped me realise pastels incl my beloved light grey really drain me so I avoid them

woodhill · 02/10/2019 17:59

Shame, I love scoop necks😊
