Argh - I ordered a preloved wedding dress from Oxfam claiming to be a size 10

It turns up and it’s the tiniest thing I’ve ever seen. I can see it’s an American brand called Sincerity Bridal and the 10 has been rubbed out and 8 written in its place. I’ve gone on the website and the measurements to fit are 35/27/39. Now is that proper proper tiny?

I’m currently a UK size 12 and 11 stone. Does anyone know how much weight I’d need to lose to fit it? I’m guessing 3 stone or something crazy 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Can you return it?
What are your measurements now. I lost a stone to lose 3 inches as a guide but everyone is different.

milliefiori · 17/09/2019 13:59

Those were my exact measurements when I was 9st 4lb and a UK size 10-12.

Newbie1981 · 17/09/2019 13:59

I weighed 9 stone on my wedding day and had a size 10, just the top was taken in a little bit. Not sure if that helps? Maybe you don't need to lose as much as 3 stone, just 2. But can't you send it back as you shouldn't have to starve yourself for this!

TinyMystery · 17/09/2019 13:59

To be fair, those measurements sound about right for a 10? Possibly a tad on the smaller size.

It doesn’t really matter what you weigh, but what your measurements are now.

MoonahStone · 17/09/2019 13:59

Oxfam have free returns, sorry this dress didn't turn out to be the one and good luck finding a replacement.

Soola · 17/09/2019 14:01

I’m a size ten and my waist and hip are smaller than 27 and 39. I’m 8 stone 4.

You could lose the weight but if you have a decent sized bosom it still might not fit. I’m modest if busy at 34c.

ISmellBabies · 17/09/2019 14:02

Wow. I remember when a 10 used to be 34-24-34. That's the problem with sizes for anything second hand, you really have to try it on because they can just vary so massively depending on when/where they're from.

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 14:03

I’m actually scared it might be cm!!! Do American brands even use inches as a measurement?

OP posts:
Apolloanddaphne · 17/09/2019 14:05

An American 8 is a UK size 4.

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 14:05

Woah!! I don’t think I’ve ever been 8 stone lol. Maybe when I was 12.

Oh yes I can of course send it back but I ♥️ It. It’s so beautiful. I have lost a stone recently so of course I’m thinking, could I lose another 2 (5? 🤦🏻‍♀️😬).

just return it. Sizing in wedding dresses is madness anyway - I seem to remember that they size upwards so if you're a high st 6/8 you're a wedding dress 10, eg
There's a really good chain of 2nd hand / sample wedding dresses called bridal reloved which is what I used after the oxfam option went back. Ignore the sizing and go and try a load on.

GeorgeTheFirst · 17/09/2019 14:07

Those measurements are a size 10

Potatopia · 17/09/2019 14:07

If it's cm, then it would sound ideal for a dolly. America loves the imperial system, it will be inches. But it could have been taken in and actually be smaller than that?

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 14:09

Apollo I thought the same. I know with kids sizes if it’s an American size it’s always a lot smaller than if it was a UK size. I’ll link to the website and the table of sizes and measurements

No, wrong way round. That's why they have a size 0 in the US, which would be a 4 here.

KUGA · 17/09/2019 14:16

If you have the receipt you can return it.

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 14:20

My measurements are 38/31/37

OP posts:
BigFatBloomers · 17/09/2019 14:21

Why don't you say what the style is and everyone can see if they can find it for you in a more 'accessible' size?

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 14:21

38/31/39 that should have said!

No, an American size 8 is a UK size 12

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 14:21

The style isn’t on the garment sadly.

Can you not find a picture from the original listing?

mumtoadancer · 17/09/2019 14:33

I used to work in bridal and the sizes in weddings dress were never the equivalent of high street sizes, they also vary considerably between brands.

Even if this one had originally been a size 10 chances are that it would have altered to fit the bride anyway so may not be the same size as it was originally, 90% of wedding dress we sold needed alterations no matter how small.

The good news is that most bridal dresses have enough fabric in the seams to go up a couple of sizes if need be. It might be worth seeing if it can be altered if you absolutely love the dress?

If you do decide to return it and order a different one does the site allow you to ask for the actual measurements of the dresses? It might be an easier than relying on the label. Good luck, I hope your find your dress.

Apolloanddaphne · 17/09/2019 18:16

Yeah so it is. My mistake!

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 18:27

It’s amazing his shit this has made me feel. I feel absolutely huge! 😣

Anyway these were the pictures I had of it on the website. It has a detachable train which is just beautiful.
