Argh - I ordered a preloved wedding dress from Oxfam claiming to be a size 10

It turns up and it’s the tiniest thing I’ve ever seen. I can see it’s an American brand called Sincerity Bridal and the 10 has been rubbed out and 8 written in its place. I’ve gone on the website and the measurements to fit are 35/27/39. Now is that proper proper tiny?

I’m currently a UK size 12 and 11 stone. Does anyone know how much weight I’d need to lose to fit it? I’m guessing 3 stone or something crazy 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m about 9st 6lb and have similar bust and hip measurements, but my stomach will never be 27. It wouldn’t matter what I did; it just won’t be! I think you need to think about it like that: what sort of shape do you have naturally? How much are you likely to lose between now and then? How much do you actually want to lose? How long until the wedding?

It’s probably best to send that one back and get something that fits you comfortably. We can help find it though Grin

X-Post. Don’t feel shit! You are NOT huge. When you find the right dress you will look and feel amazing.

BogglesGoggles · 17/09/2019 18:32

That’s a small ten or an eight. I’m naturally a larger ten. I would never be able to fit those measurements without being medically underweight (even then might need to lob my breasts off).

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 18:35

The wedding isn’t booked yet so I have as long as necessary, but I need to be realistic. The smallest I got down to was 10 stone two years ago. But I’m 44 now so obviously heading towards peri/meno and I know losing weight is even more difficult (impossible).

I feel confident I could lose another stone, another stone and a half is possible. I think I probably could make my waist that measurement but I’m concerned about my boobs. They’re quite big.

Is there any kind of model code on a label (5 or 6 digits)?

RunsForGummyBears · 17/09/2019 18:41

Is there enough fabric to allow for alterations?

SpinsterOfArts · 17/09/2019 18:41

My measurements are very close to those (35/25/39) and I generally wear a 12 to accommodate my hips. You're definitely not huge, OP! You just need to find something better suited to your shape.

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 18:41

The only thing on the label is a 10 on the dress and a 10 crossed out and a 8 written in on the train.

As others have said an American 8 is a UK 12. Its possible however that it's an "old" UK 12 if the dress wasnt made in very recent years due to vanity sizing so it could be closer to a 10. The bride might also have had the dress altered. To me that dress looks like it could be altered to fit. Get to the weight you are happy with and that's achievable and then see about getting it altered. Its really lovely.

BornInAThunderstorm · 17/09/2019 18:45

If it is only tight on the corset you could perhaps have it let out with a panel added into each side seam?

beethebee · 17/09/2019 18:49

Oh, that is very pretty.

Before you think about returning it, get thee to a seamstress and see what they think about alterations/panels in the side if necessary.

NameChange84 · 17/09/2019 18:49

@BornInAThunderstorm makes a good suggestion. I've also added a corset back to a similar dress that was too small for my mahoosive boobs lol and it still looked good. A good seamstress could sort it out.

gubbsywubbsy · 17/09/2019 18:50

Weddings dresses are always small but should be made with seams to be let out . Take it to a seamstress and ask her . They are designed for this

RandomMess · 17/09/2019 18:52

You could have the back laced instead of buttons?

Still as peri approaches I would be concerned about getting your waist measurement small enough?

gubbsywubbsy · 17/09/2019 18:53

Yes .. they could definitely add a panel in the back too .

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 19:00

You can see how tiny it is on the mannequin. It doesn’t even do up and mannequins are model size aren’t they!!!?

OP posts:
Lunde · 17/09/2019 19:01

It may be an older/vintage design - sizing was a lot smaller 20-30 years ago

DD2 had her eyes on a Laura Ashley evening dress that I bought in the 1980s - size 10 - but the waist when we measured it was 25 inches

TheJoxter · 17/09/2019 19:02

That’s gorgeous but it does look absolutely tiny! No idea what my measurements are but I’m a size 8/10 and don’t think I could squeeze into that

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 19:09

TheJoxter now I want to know what your measurements are 😂

I’ve been racking my brains to see if I know anyone tiny that I could ask to try it on but all my close friends are standard sizes.

OP posts:
TinyMystery · 17/09/2019 19:10

I’d say that dress is far smaller than 35-27-37! Shop mannequins have a 25 inch waist if I remember correctly? And are often put in a 34B or C bra, although a 30E is probably a more realistic size. And they can’t even do that dress up the back!

TinyMystery · 17/09/2019 19:11

Sorry, that should read 24 inch waist.

TinyMystery · 17/09/2019 19:12

(Also an 8-10 here with 35-26-37ish measurements and there is no way in hell I would squeeze into that)

yellowallpaper · 17/09/2019 19:17

It's a size 10. Would fit me and I weigh 8 1/2 stone.

BlueCornsihPixie · 17/09/2019 19:17

Those measurements are a 10-12, which is about an American 8. Doesn't quite work out as uk sizes being 2 bigger.

Those are pretty much my exact measurements (slightly smaller bust) and my 39 inch hips rarely fit a 10, but top is a 10. A 10 is normally a 27 inch waist. I weight 10st 10 at 5'7 if that's any help?

However that dress looks tiny, way smaller than the measurements given!

sheshootssheimplores · 17/09/2019 19:29

I guess I need to give up on it. Such a shame.
