Dress is too short, can I wear it with leggings?

I bought a Mark's and Spencer's dress and tried it on in the shop and it fitted perfectly so I took it home and washed it. I put it on with tights and it's a bit too short really.

I'm an apple shape and have recently lost weight, but I don't want to wear it as it feels wrong. Can I wear it with leggings or is that a no no these days? I'm 49 and not really bothered about looking up to date, but I don't want to look silly.

Have you got a picture, what about thick tights

pottedshrimps · 20/08/2019 20:51

it looks like this

I'm only short.

I'd just wear some thick tights !! You can't beat them x

pottedshrimps · 20/08/2019 20:53

Thick tights when it gets colder? They'll look more sensible than ordinary tights?

I haven't worn a dress since I got married 16 years ago. Dh went quiet when I asked him if it looked okay. He said he didn't know I had knees 😂

Black tights or grey?

I'm such a fuckwit 😮 I was all excited as well.

Is it shirt enough to get away with looking more like a tunic top than a dress?

I love it, black leggings wouldnt look awful and if your more comfortable that way then that says it all x

AudacityOfHope · 20/08/2019 20:57

I'd wear it with leggings and slouchy boots. But I am a committed hater of tights.

pottedshrimps · 20/08/2019 21:00

I've had it on with black trousers as a tunic, but it's dress shaped at the bottom with a sort of flary bit, so doesn't pass for a tunic.

I don't mind tights so could get some opaque ones and I have boots. I'll just have to wait for colder weather now.

If it’s shrunk and you washed as per the instructions then you could return it surely? Then swap and do it on a cooler cycle next time?

palahvah · 20/08/2019 21:07

Footless tights (more comfy around the feet because you can wear socks) and ankle/knee-high boots.

pottedshrimps · 20/08/2019 21:07

No, I don't think it's shrink I only did it on a quick 30 cycle. I think it might have come from the petit range. I'm 5'4" so not very tall.

I wear leggings with dresses. Fuck it.

MiniMum97 · 20/08/2019 21:47

I'd wear it with leggings. I wear loads of dresses over leggings though. My legs are a mess an wouldn't inflict hem on anyone!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/08/2019 21:49

I see it’s a petite - how tall are you? I’d wear thick tights with it.

BirthdayDreamer · 20/08/2019 21:58

Yes you can wear that with black tights.

If it was a white/pale dress with no black or dark element to the pattern (ie white and blue/white and green/white and pink) then black tights would be wrong. However there's a dark colour to the print so that then connects with the black tights.

I would wear that with black tights and black ankle boots with a bit of a heel. You could also wear it with black leggings and tan boots for a more casual/daytime look, that would make it more of a tunic.

Widowodiw · 20/08/2019 22:01

Depends what you want to end look to look like. I do think that legging are more casual
And tights do make an outfit look more dressy. Tbh I don’t know what colour leggings or tights you would put with this .... I wouldn’t choose black.

MoltonSilver · 20/08/2019 22:49

It looks pretty versatile. You could even wear it over jeans.

Robs20 · 20/08/2019 22:52

Black tights (the thick opaque kind) and boots would look great.

CherrySocks · 20/08/2019 23:03

That's a lovely dress. I think it would look good with either black leggings or thick black tights. Or skinny black jeans.

Also - you can wear anything you like!

canidothisalone · 20/08/2019 23:13

Sorry if this sounds patronising but have you ironed it after washing? I often find that shape/ length returns a bit after a good iron

pottedshrimps · 20/08/2019 23:20

I haven't ironed it. I think it's because I didn't realise it was on the shorter side when I tried it on as I was wearing trousers. I got a bit carried away Blush

I don’t think leggings would go with the style. It would work with opaques, l don’t wear short dresses but in this case, l would also wear it with bare legs when about the house. After a few wearings, you might feel comfortable in it.

Mileysmiley · 21/08/2019 05:26

Does it matter what age you are? I wear all kinds of clothes and as long as you feel comfortable in them that is all that counts imo

Summersummershine · 21/08/2019 06:27

I saw that dress online a few days ago and was tempted - is it nice quality in real life? I would definitely try ironing it as it's viscose - I've got a few viscose clothes that shrink when washed and then expand again when ironed. Very annoying as I don't generally iron anything else Grin

Also agree with other posters - leggings or tights would look fine with it Smile
