Capsule wardrobes

Has anybody successfully managed to create a capsule wardrobe? Or is this a pipe dream to make us but expensive things?

I've started listing all my clothes I've not worn in years/probably won't wear again and plan to slowly but surely replace my entire wardrobe with things I'll actually wear. I've made a list of what I want to eventually have and looked for better quality and sustainable type things about it's coming out at about £1k. Obviously won't but all this at once, but am I putting a lot of effort and time into something that's actually a bit of a waste of time?

I’m not sticking to my colour palette religiously like I thought I would, but I am more mindful of my accessories & making sure they are right. Right now my non-maternity clothes seem to be strictly various greens, mustard, various browns, dark grey & black. Lots more browns than pre-analysis which is good but I like how they work with my existing black bits so I have more black than I should really. The app is showing me that these colours are all working nicely together. I can’t believe how many outfits I can create from (what I consider) a relatively small wardrobe.

happytobemrsg · 12/08/2019 09:08

Oh I’m an Autumn!

cheesenpickles · 12/08/2019 15:21

Quick one, does anybody know if you share your wardrobe (specifically your I wish section) with other people? Building up a bit of a wish list that would be useful to share with my other half.

I don’t think so as I read you can’t even back the app up to iCloud 😳

cheesenpickles · 13/08/2019 15:47

@happytobemrsg wardrobe shuffle is AMAZING. Combinations I wouldn't have even dreamed of and I'm actually surprised after stripping back my wardrobe how much really wearable stuff I have. It's definitely given me a list of "wants" though but making it a lot easier to track them. Thanks so much for recommending it!

@cheesenpickles you’re welcome! It makes getting dressed into something I love & feel good in so quick. I’m hoping it’ll help me feel like “me” when DS2 arrives next week & make things easier when I’m sleep deprived. Thing is, I’ve so enjoyed putting looks together that all of a sudden I needed a new scarf I have been coveting because it would work with so many looks. Now I need a black wool coat to go with it...

Arsenicinthesugarbowl · 13/08/2019 21:38

happy I’ve just downloaded this as I have tons of clothes but am terrible at putting things together. I’m slightly horrified at the amount of clothes I have. But I’ve had a fab evening taking photos of things and using clipper to add website pics. It’s a great app! Thanks for the tip.

happytobemrsg · 13/08/2019 22:43

Maybe try the outfit shuffle @Arsenicinthesugarbowl it’ll give you some ideas

PamelaTodd · 14/08/2019 01:29

I sorted through my wardrobe with a passing nod to Project 333, but with about 60 items. I might give it another tweak in a week or two.
It’s quite an eye opener. And much easier to identify the gaps in my wardrobe and see why particular items don’t get as much wear as I’d like.
Excited now to try this app.

ememem84 · 14/08/2019 04:41

Ooh yes black coat. That was ob my list for last year. But I bought a green one instead.

I am enjoying wardrobe shuffle. I still need to finish photographing everything. Just skirts shorts and dresses to go.

I’ve cheated slightly. In that I’ve not asked every style of “something” or if I’ve got black jeans I’ve just put black skinnies - not the ripped ones or the flared ones.

cheesenpickles · 14/08/2019 07:02

I've still got to add my enormous collection of jumpers and I'm already at 60 items. I think I need to do more sorting with t-shirts and jumpers specifically. I've also set a diary entry for three months where I'll check what hasn't been worn.

I’m really getting into this now. Downloaded the app but didn’t get much time to add in many clothes yet. I’m starting to see how many outfit combinations I have, or how a different pair of shoes can change the vibe of an outfit. I feel like I suddenly have a lot more to wear despite taking clothes out of my wardrobe.

ememem84 · 15/08/2019 06:50

I’ve been making lists of what I need to add to wardrobe. Probably nothing needed really but it’s more of a want and a what is missing. And what will need replacing.

My plan is to ask dh for vouchers for my birthday in October. And then buy some bits then. When I go back to work in January I’m aiming to have this all set up and workable.

cheesenpickles · 15/08/2019 07:42

@ememem84 I know what you mean about lists of missing things but actually is it just wanting them? Grin

OP posts:
ememem84 · 15/08/2019 07:49

@cheesenpickles ....yes. Haha.

Although I will need a smart black/grey coat for work. The green one I bought last year I got in the sale in Oasis. I’d seen it full price £140 but couldn’t justify the cost on a green coat. Black or grey I could have justified it.

I got lucky and managed to get green one for £40. Yay!

Anyway. The only things I “need” are coat. And tights.

I want to get a couple of pairs of shoes and some tan knee high boots. Because I got rid of mine last year as they fell apart.

cheesenpickles · 15/08/2019 07:59

Things I NEED are some new black skinny jeans as mine are falling off me now, light wash skinny jeans, a jeans belt (but I want a super expensive investment one as I'll wear it everyday). Things I want are a statement blazer (a potential is arriving in the post tomorrow), brown boots, a black tote bag, leopard print faux fur coat, some naice flared jeans, cashmere jumper and some loafers. Grin

I could probably get away with not having any of it but the jeans I need as I wear them daily and the ones I currently have need replacing or are the wrong fit for bigger tops and jumpers.

happytobemrsg · 15/08/2019 09:53

I’ve had a look at that project 333... seems like I have too many things!

7 dresses
3 jeans
5 treggings
5 jumpers
3 boots
2 trainers
3 bags
1 jacket
1 rain coat
1 wool coat

I really don’t think I should have to include accessories but here you go...
4 belts
3 bags
3 scarves

Tbh I’d like more jumpers! But my app is telling me I really don’t need them.

ememem84 · 15/08/2019 10:23

While I was pregnant I bought 6 pairs of jeans from Topshop. Jamie high waisted skinnies. In black, and also “green wash” blue. Some are ripped. Some are not. I’m a fan of “if it fits buy multiple pairs”

I also want a black slouchy handbag. But haven’t found the right one yet part from the mulberry one I saw about a month ago which is just too pricey to be able to justify while on mat leave unless I ask dh to buy it for me but even then too much

cheesenpickles · 15/08/2019 11:10

I LOVE Jamie jeans but I just don't seem to get much wear out of them. They always seem to gets holes after about 6 months. I have a sneaking suspicion it's because I put them k the dryer and it fries the elastic. I've got a new pair on its way (£20 in the sale and one of my "needed" pieces and I may try the "no wash, stick them in the freezer instead" grossness that people seem to believe works for jeans.

OP posts:
cheesenpickles · 15/08/2019 11:19

I've not uploaded all my jumpers or dresses yet but as it stands I have.

20 t-shirts and strap tops
6 jumpers (with about 10 to upload)
3 hoodies
3 blouses
4 pairs of jeans
1 pair of trousers
3 skirts (that I never wear)
3 pairs of boots
1 pair of sandals
3 flats
3 heels
5 pairs of trainers Blush
9 dresses
3 bags
3 sunglasses
2 pashminas
3 scarfs
2 coats
5 jackets

That's 93 pieces after I cleared everything out. Yikes. Failing a touch I think! Though this is all seasons.

cheesenpickles · 15/08/2019 11:23

Worth noting with trainers I tend to stock up and the wear one pair to death before replacing. Not sure if I should start rotating them all or continue with my current system with a ban on new ones in place. Thoughts?

OP posts:
happytobemrsg · 15/08/2019 11:49

I may need to replace my jeans depending on my post-pregnancy shape/weight. But ultimately 3 is the goal - khaki skinnies, black relaxed skinny, grey mom jeans. I think that would cover all bases. Maybe a blue pair but not essential (which I guess is the point really). My treggings are workhorses too - 1 grey biker, 1 black biker, 3 various checks - navy, grey, burgundy. Also may need to replace jumpers for the same reason - they are looking a little worn too (except for my one & only cashmere jumper but with 2 young DC I don’t think I should start going down that route... unless you can convince me that cashmere & children can live in harmony?!?)

@cheesenpickles I’m very new to trainers & although I’d like more (with some fun patterns), my two seem to cover everything - a black pair & a white pair. Those, as well as black Chelsea boots, tan Chelsea boots & black OTK boots again seem to cover everything for me. So if I were you I’d ban all new trainers if the ones you currently have cover all bases.

cheesenpickles · 15/08/2019 11:59

I've got some colourful ones, some white with leopard print, silver flag forms, blue converse and lilac pearlised reebok classics. To be fair, a pair of sold white superstars or even with a black stripes would probably be the best as some of the pairs I have are too colourful or busy for some of my outfits. BUT, I think these reeboks have had their day (so will be consigned to garden wear) and I need to start wearing the others.

What's the app you're using actually called? I'm having trouble finding it on Play Store. Thanks Smile
