Went out this afternoon to the library and shops, and I just feel so damned scruffy compared to everyone else. They all seem to look so well put together, whereas I look thrown together IMO.

I am alwasy clean and tidy, hair done make up on etc, but feel like I am not making the best of myself.

I really struggle with buying clothes, I have no confidence in choosing stuff that I like and so stick to safe things, and I have no idea what is in and whats not.

Today I had on dark jeans, white vest top with cerise pink hooded top over it, and white and cerise pink puma trainers.

I felt scruffy.

I am 29, 5'2 and a size 12 (verging on 14 ), and need some help.

Oh and broke so bargains a must.

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 17:23

My trainers are past their best tbh.

get one of those jumpers or a long sleeved t in a nice contrasting colour to the beige jacket - eg a raspberry or petrel blue

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 17:23

Ohh those are nice bundle, will have to go have a look at those in rl.

Meant to say, that I do have nice clothes, I just never know quite what to do with them.

For example, I have a grey knitted long top, which cojmes down to about between my bum and my knees. It is really nice, but i never know what to wear it with, it doiesn't look right with my jeans as they are all bootcut. Do I need skinny jeans ?

i think you do, or leggings

do a trinny & tranny - lay out stuff into outfits on your bed and see what works. keep capsule wardrobe bits separate until you have other bits to wear with the rest or be ruthless, and chuck.

you can sometimes get really nice cashmere cardis in charity shops. and vintage-looking cotton shirts that you can wear wtih a t shirt underneath.

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 17:29

Ta girls, you are really helping.

Am I weird though in looking at stuff, thinking 'ohh thats nice', but then not buying it because i'm not sure what other people will think ??

Just spotted a pair of pumps online and done exactly that, thought 'ohhhh like them', and then 'hmmm people would think they were crap'.

Good job they are too pricey lol.

how long are the fitted jackets?

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 17:32

Erm, bit longer than hip length I think, not long and not short, just normal lol.

bundle · 25/07/2007 17:32

lol!
just go out with something you have to buy, not impulse stuff unless it's fabulous and would go with everything. spend a bit more on shoes, it does make a difference and buy a few staples eg black trousers, good knitwear that will see you through a number of years.

exciting news re: your hair!

lou33 · 25/07/2007 17:33

not necessariyl skinny jeans for the grey top, but straight leg definitely

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 17:35

Yeah, I am a bit worried about the hair, but i'm sure it will be fine if I explain exactly what I want.

Will go through wardrobe later and see whats good and whats not.

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 17:38

Try H&M too. I go in there sometimes and try on loads of different outfits that I would actually never be seen dead in. It just helps me get out of a rut to see what I look like in random stuff.

And sometimes I find a new look that I actually quite like and it doesn't break the bank. Also quite often find stuff in Asda.

Can't really speak at the moment though. Have worn hair in a pony tail ever since giving birth 4 months ago, and am still wearing elastic waistbands far too frequently. Ugh.

Maybe we need Trinny & Susannah to do a Mumsnet makeover.

LIZS · 25/07/2007 18:07

Can I join you in feeling scruffy today - was similarly dressed

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 18:37

Welcome to the club LIZ

I think we definatly need a Trinny and Suse mass makeover, and I am first in the queue.

Dorothy Perkins often have their jewellery reduced to £1.

nutcracker · 25/07/2007 18:53

Yeah I love their stuff when they have a sale, have got a few bits and bobs from there.
