Went out this afternoon to the library and shops, and I just feel so damned scruffy compared to everyone else. They all seem to look so well put together, whereas I look thrown together IMO.

I am alwasy clean and tidy, hair done make up on etc, but feel like I am not making the best of myself.

I really struggle with buying clothes, I have no confidence in choosing stuff that I like and so stick to safe things, and I have no idea what is in and whats not.

Today I had on dark jeans, white vest top with cerise pink hooded top over it, and white and cerise pink puma trainers.

I felt scruffy.

I am 29, 5'2 and a size 12 (verging on 14 ), and need some help.

Oh and broke so bargains a must.

Hmmmm colours that suit me...I think they are white, black, and green. Actually I have no clue LOL.

I always have hair and make up done, and nails are always nice and tidy, which I am very proud of as I was a nail biter from birth to 27 lol.

excuse me. wots wrong with wearing your hair in a ponytail please ladies? is it really that naff?

CescaD · 26/07/2007 08:09

Don't think there is anything wrong with wearing your hear in a ponytail. But I've been doing it for months to save myself the effort of having to do anything else with it. Haven't blow dried it once since the baby was born. It just gets a cursory brush and put back in a ponytail every morning.

What's the deal with trousers at the moment - do they have to be skinny? Is straight leg better? Is boot cut strictly forbidden? And cardigans... I often see stylish people wearing tight little cardigans and they look great but when I try them I always look like a librarian (no offence to librarians).

MrsBadger · 26/07/2007 14:38

trousers should be whatever shape suits you best
fashion is fickle, arse size is constant.

cardies are hard - the rest of the outfit needs to be very funky indeed. I wear more (ahem) classic styles and cannot wear cardies due to librarianishness.

Any hairstyle is naff if you do it every day without thought or variation, and the ponytail referred to as the 'Croydon facelift' (ie high on head, scraped back withing an inch of its life and gelled rock hard) is always naff, and is flattering only to the most symmetrical and well-cheekboned of faces.

Think boot cut jeans can be frumpy these days - I recently got rid of all mine as they definitely made me frumpy. Though I did see a very slim woman in white loose boot cut jeans the other day and she looked nice. I bought the Boden straight legs (they say skinny but they aren't like my dsd's idea of skinny!) instead, and really like the new loose cut jeans too. I think you can wear a hoodie type jacket, but not in pink ideally. A friend of mine still wears short velour zip tops (green or soft brown) with jeans and a vest and looks good and appropriate. Think the pink and white trainers wouldn't be good with the hoodie thing though. You can't look elegant in trainers IMO.
Mind you I wore 3/4 jeans, a white cotton kaftan style top and gold glittery ballet pumps today and still felt frumpy, but then my hair desperately needs a cut & colour and I put on a few pounds on holiday which is always a downer!

Try Faith for shoes too.

They are a reasonable price and fashionable and quality and comfy.

They seem to have loads of those ballet pump style shoes and if you go when they have a sale on, they are soooooo cheap.

my tip would be to buy some things in really safe colours eg black, cream, very dark blue

i think that is easier and more tasteful for every day and you can wear something more interesting in the evening.

also buy one or two really nice things from good shops - in the sale maybe - rather than fom primark and wear them to death eg a cardi in the sale from whistles that looks great is better way to spend 35 quid than three things from primark that dont fit so well
