Can you help me find something to pass as wedding dress?

We are eloping (ick, hate that word) near Xmas and I'm looking for a wedding dress but think I have a case of champagne taste, lemonade budget. I'd like something under £300 including alterations (I'm very short).
I like the embellished/beaded/Gatsby style rather than traditional lace styles so I'm hoping to find a cocktail/prom type dress that'll work.
Ideally a tiny train, fitted, not strapless and I don't mind if it's cream or champagne colour but still need to look a bit bridal.
High street bridal ranges only seem to have lace ones.
Any ideas?

A little over budget but this is lovely: uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_40,mon_40.1/6402054608?skipRedirection=true

Ooooh that’s lovely bob

Can you post some pictures/links of the right sort of thing? I'll happily look for something later but not sure what you mean by gatsby.

Shitonthebloodything · 13/06/2019 13:23

These are all beautiful, definitely on the right track. I'd need something like a wider strap or some sort of alteration to make them a bit more like what I'm looking for. I've attached a pic of the sort of bridal dresses I like to help.

Sorry I don't know how to quote, this one would be perfect if it wasn't quite so pink, I'd want to put some sort of a cap sleeve or shrug over my shoulders though

Have you thought of going to a bridal boutique and trying on bridesmaids dresses? They will make them in loads of different colours, including cream. A friend of mine did this and it worked out a lot cheaper. I think she paid around £300 for everything, including alterations.

I bought my (beautiful, designer) wedding dress of eBay for £50! It was one a lady had bought in a sample sale, then had a baby and couldn't fit into it, so she sold it on to me. Because it had never been worn to an actual wedding, it had never been altered which was lucky as I'm tall and quite busty.

I had to pay for alterations on top of that, but all in, it was about £150. Worked really well for us and nobody knew it was secondhand except that I keep telling people.

Try Needle and Thread - some designs under/around £300.

Thanks Chickyduck, they're all lovely dresses, the silver one would be great but it's the wrong colour, wish they did it in ivory.

I tried wed2b but the only one I liked there was £549 before alterations.

Will keep an eye on eBay too - you were so lucky with that find Fatkins!

Needle and thread were either all over budget or a bit too floaty boho for me

How about this one?
www.tkmaxx.com/women/clothing/dresses/cream-lace-yasmin-bridal-dress/p/30126672
£1600 down to £246, looks gorgeous - and four left in a size 14!

Fatkins · 13/06/2019 14:18

Op, you're right! I think I was either really lucky, or times have changed. I just looked up some wedding dresses by the same designer on eBay, to see if I could find anything for you, and they are a lot more £££ than I paid in 2010! I remember there were lots on for hundreds even then, but they rarely sold. Maybe worth keeping an eye on it as I think I did have to do a good bit of hunting. I also bought a size up as I thought it would be easier to take in than to let out.

Another friend of mine approached a designer in London who was happy to sell her a white dress they had used in photo shoots for really cheap. They even altered it for her free of charge. Maybe another idea?

Fatkins · 13/06/2019 14:20

I love the TK Maxx one just posted.

ChickyDuck · 13/06/2019 14:23

If you like that one, have a look at he Adrianna Papell website

https://www.adriannapapell.com/dresses/white/#srule=price-low-to-high&sz=58&start=0

There are kids of nice dresses on there and seems to be a big sale. Think they come from america but with free international shipping...

BikeRunSki · 13/06/2019 14:56

If you are tiny, how about vintage from that era?

Shitonthebloodything · 13/06/2019 20:56

I'm not tiny sadly, I'm short and curvy.
Chickyduck that site looks great!

Good! Let us know if you find anything :)

Phase eight do lovely wedding dresses. Above you budget slightly at the moment but worth keeping an eye on them for sale time.
