Help! Parisian wedding.

My DBro is getting married in Paris to wonderful and impossibly gorgeous French SIL. I love them both but they and all their friends are very image conscious. I always feel like a giant pale galumphing hippo when I am over there and unfortunately I can't hide this time. There is no way I won't stand out like a sore thumb among their slender tanned petite friends so I am thinking instead try to go very fashion forward (which they will all recognise and appreciate, SIL reads French Vogue cover to cover every month). Like some kind of mad jumpsuit or giant Villanelle pink tulle dress or something.

Unfortunately very fashion forward seems to be made for sample size people and I'm 5'6", 11st, short waist, big bust and wobbly belly but good legs and relatively good arms. Looking through fashion editorials for ideas has terrified me (like this - eek: www.theguardian.com/fashion/gallery/2019/may/05/rainbow-warrior-bold-colours-for-spring)

Any suggestions? Budget up to £800 for the whole outfit.

My usual style is more along the lines of cigarette trousers, striped top, blazer and converse...

I think you’re going to blow their socks off.

Whatever you wear make sure you can move in it and it doesn’t tug, crease, nip or cause you to fuss with it.

I’m excited for you.

I actually love those ghost dresses btw

1frenchfoodie · 07/05/2019 19:30

The first jumpsuit looks amazing. On trend, fun, striking.

Xiaoxiong · 07/05/2019 21:14

Awww Thanks thanks for bigging me up! First outfits (and shapewear!) should arrive tomorrow and I promise to update the thread ASAP.

french yes more and more I have decided I love that first DVF jumpsuit...sadly it is sold out at Net a Porter, I think because it was Fall '18. If anyone can find it for me in a UK size 12 I promise to buy it and try it on for the thread!

Have you checked out Rixo dresses on Net a Porter, OP? They're an extremely of-the-moment brand and do some great styles for weddings.

AudacityOfHope · 07/05/2019 22:12

I'm just placemarking because I want to see all of those fabulous dresses when you try them on!

Apart from the Toast ones 😱

BlackPrism · 07/05/2019 22:27

Also like La Double J yacht dress

WokenUp · 07/05/2019 22:31

Ugh it's such a shame the DVF isn't in your my size as it's a 'seasonal pick' on the app which means -25% !!!
I am also on the hunt for a fabulous outfit for a posh wedding Grin

InglouriousBasterd · 07/05/2019 22:37

Not placemarking for vicarious trying on of dresses at all Wink

Miseryisabutterfly · 08/05/2019 09:04

OP, you seem to have a great sense of style and I think you’re right to go with a bit of a show stopping outfit. I’d also hazard a guess that you’re much lovelier than you think you are. I think most of us mere mortals would feel intimidated in the company of Parisian women because we’ve built them up to be effortlessly and impossibly stylish. I’m rambling and sound like I’m kissing your arse, so I’m going to stop 😂

Miseryisabutterfly · 08/05/2019 09:14

This DVF dress has a similar feel to the jumpsuit and a wrap dress is always flattering.

Miseryisabutterfly · 08/05/2019 09:15

Ignore me. 12 is oos.

Xiaoxiong · 08/05/2019 10:27

Aww butterfly you're very kind, thank you! That is a beautiful dress but yes the curse of OOS strikes again. It seems everyone else my size is ordering the same stuff!!

First shipment of stuff should arrive today so I will update soon with pictures Grin

I keep checking this thread as I'm so excited 😭

Starbonnet123 · 08/05/2019 10:53

Can't wait to see your choices , some of these dresses are fabulous Smile

Sagradafamiliar · 08/05/2019 12:53

I didn't have any specific advice but I am vicariously excited for your shipment!

Xiaoxiong · 08/05/2019 17:32

Oh dearie me well - this is going to be a case of dreams colliding with reality - here are the two jumpsuits from the Outnet, one that I thought would be Le Smoking. It looks more like Le Sausage, especially between the navel and crotch.

The other I thought would look easy breezy kimono, which somehow manages to be both voluminous and also tight around the waist!? It looks like I came to the party in my pyjamas and dressing gown. It also is completely open backed down to the waist in the back which I somehow missed on the website! And they both gape massively on my boobs Sad

Back to searching for that dream DVF jumpsuit sold out everywhere... maybe I should pull the trigger on the Vivienne Westwood now!

Oh what a shame , i always thought I'd look good in linen but i look so frumpy , i don't know how other women pull it off .Do you have a tkmaxx near you ? Ive found some gorgeous one offs there , just while you're waiting for your other outfits to arrive Smile

Xiaoxiong · 08/05/2019 18:33

Star yes there is one in town. I will try that tomorrow.

Other options I can try on in person: M&S, French Connnection, Warehouse, Karen Millen, Hobbs, Zara, Mint Velvet, Phase 8, Whistles. Also a local department store with concessions from various brands like Ted Baker, Wallis and Oasis...

Tomorrow may be a hard core trying on session.

SoyYo · 08/05/2019 18:42

@Xia I’m sorry it’s a fail. Le Smoking a size up could also fix the gape issue but if you’ve gone off the idea altogether then onwards and upwards. The blue one is just not right for your shape.
Having experienced exactly the same challenges I know it’s the pits.
From distant memory when I bought from them they’re quite speedy with refunds.
If you try ghost which are lovely and fluid and skim (assuming you like the boho style) go for L rather than M to ensure decent boob fit.

Don’t give up! You’ve got a va va boom shape and the right one is waiting for you somewhere.
I think the VW will be tons better and tres English eccentric/chic. Put on the credit card so if not right refund is in before bill is due.

SoyYo · 08/05/2019 18:43

Do you have a John Lewis nearby?
Book their dresser woman/personal shopper option. I hear they’re very good and they do the hard work for you

Sagradafamiliar · 08/05/2019 19:09

It's not you, it's the jumpsuits.

Atalune · 08/05/2019 19:14

I think you’re hiding your best feature in those clothes- your legs and tits.

I’m gonna say it again- get the VW dress and I think it’s going to hit you in all the right places and showcase your legs.

Spray tan- a very light one. Those legs...swoon.

What’s your hair like? I’m imagining a soft undone wave with one side tucked behind your ear.

Like this wave. Will take a mega blow dry, ALL THE PRODUCTS, then a beachy wave with irons/tongs, then ruffle through with your fingers. And spray lightly with some finishing spray and a pro tip- bit of dry shampoo through the ends to give it texture and shape.

TheBossOfMe · 08/05/2019 19:15

You need much better heels - pointy toes and probably a lot higher - to make the second jumpsuit look good. That is probably true of anything you buy given your height/shape - it will elongate the leg vs torso proportions.

Jon65 · 08/05/2019 19:15

Cos have an understated jumpsuit that would look better on you. www.cosstores.com/en_eur/women/dresses/jumpsuits/product.wide-leg-cotton-jumpsuit-burgundy.0726783003.html
