What are the cool kids wearing jewellery wise?

It's my dds 21st soon (I know, but it's still a thing in our family) and she's hinted that she'd like a piece of jewellery. Now I remember asking for a locket for mine and parents bought me one that I frankly hated (and was surprised as it wasn't their style either) but I kept it. I don't want her to have the same disappointment. She has quite simple chic taste, not into Pandora or nomination, probably like a necklace. What I like at 60 is probably not what she likes at 21, so where and what do I need to look for? Looked on etsy already, nothing that inspires.

I find a lot of Scandinavian jewellery fits this description.

If all else fails, maybe you could take her on a fun mother/daughter shopping day to find the piece, complete with a lovely lunch somewhere and make a day of it?

Try Alex monroe?

slug · 15/04/2019 11:47

If you can afford it, diamond studs are timeless.

Failing that, I love this necklace
gold with a diamond
very wearable
Some beautiful necklaces here

RocketSurgery · 15/04/2019 11:48

Alex Monroe is definitely mums in their 30’s jewellery, rather than young women in their 20’s.

Luaa · 15/04/2019 11:56

Have you considered just asking her? Give her a budget and ask her to find something or ask for some ideas of what she likes? As you experienced, it's not nice a) being disappointed by something like this and b) knowing someone spent a lot of money on something you don't even like

chickenalapesh · 15/04/2019 11:58

For my 21st I got a pair of diamond studs from my grandparents and my parents got me a Theo fennel necklace which I wear every day and I'm now 28.

Oriela have some really pretty and I'd say on trend stuff. Or if you're feeling generous, Astley Clarke. Then again, not all of their ranges are pricey either.

~Disclaimer~ am not a cool kid though. As much as I'd like to be.

Womanland · 15/04/2019 12:09

You could check out your local art college. Many up and coming designers would be delighted to commission a unique piece and won't be as expensive as established designers. Your daughter will get a unique piece.

spanishwife · 15/04/2019 12:13

Fashion crowd are wearing:

Astrid & Miyu
Otiumberg
Missoma
Monica Vinader

GregoryPeckingDuck · 15/04/2019 12:15

Necklaces are very difficult to choose. Simple earnings or a nice watch might be easier.

chickenalapesh · 15/04/2019 12:20

Second @spanishwife

Or how about an ear piercing and she can pick an earring at Maria tash? Guess that's quite niche though.

Harriedharriet · 15/04/2019 12:23

Dinny Hall does some beautiful things, mainly silver but also gold and precious stones.

Someone once bought me a bee necklace from Alex Monroe and the quality was shocking. The chain was tarnished and discoloured, I sent it back only for the replacement to have the same problem and then the bee fell off. Think I only wore it twice. Personally I would avoid.

KittyWindbag · 15/04/2019 13:25

When I was 21 my parents had a ring made using my birthstone. It’s my absolute favourite piece of jewellery.

A very simple, classic necklace like a chain or diamond stud earrings would look good forever.

Gold hoop earrings are very fashionable as are gold necklaces. They also always come back into fashion so would be a good shout.

Happyinheels · 15/04/2019 14:39

I can't pretend to be a cool kid but how about Vivienne Westwood or Tiffany's?

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 15/04/2019 14:43

I’d probably go with diamond stud earrings or a diamond solitaire necklace. My parents bought me a Longines watch for my 21st and I have worn it every day since (I’m now 39)

tierraJ · 15/04/2019 14:47

I remember my parents bought me a gold ring for my 21st but I can't wear it anymore- your fingers change a lot over the years!

A necklace, earrings or bracelet is better.

chickenalapesh · 15/04/2019 14:49

Vivienne Westwood really not cool. Sorry

Baconbinge · 15/04/2019 14:49

Missoma is very popular, and they have very simple and chic designs.

prampushingdownthehighst · 15/04/2019 14:51

We bought our dds a watch that they chose.
It was a fair financial outlay but we figured that they have it for the rest of their lives.

EjectorCrab · 15/04/2019 14:52

I have recently discovered Monica Vinander and she has some lovely pieces. I too would avoid rings. Earrings or necklace most likely to be worn again and again over time.

Atalune · 15/04/2019 14:52

I would get a very simple thin gold bangle. Very on trend for stacking and fashion right now. But Also totally timeless and classic. Can’t be worn alone, can be stacked with some cheap and cheerful bits, will fit forever too.

Get one made. Put her DOB inside it,maybe some other inscription.

Atalune · 15/04/2019 14:54

Also don’t go for anything except precious metal.

Monica vicander etc are lots of gold vermeil. Just a fashionista word for gold plated.
