Christian Dior Exhibition - V&A - sold out - ticket on the day advice please?

I thought I would post on this thread, given your interests.

Really want to go to this exhibition but missed the tickets. Living hundreds of miles away makes planning the trip particularly limiting.

On the website it says that some tickets are on sale at 10.00am 'on the day' every day. I could try this but would appreciate any wise words from anyone with any advice.
Has anyone bought tickets on the day?
Was there a long queue? Did you try and miss out?

It would be one thing to travel and queue for tickets if there is a fair chance ( lots of tickets available) but quite another if there are very few tickets to be bought.

When we there queuing for another exhibition it was sold out entirely by 11. Don't know if you can get in if you're a member even if day tickets are sold out.

When I went, I overheard someone in the queue behind me say that the day before there had been 58 tickets available the day before. This was a Sunday and the queue was massive.

I also have a friend who went straight up to the V&A from school drop off (so would have got there for 945 or so) and couldn't get a ticket on the day for the Frida Kahlo, which was similar in popularity.

If you really want to go and are travelling specifically for it, I'd become a member. You can go any time, no need to book, you might have to queue a little bit at the exhibition before you go in. You can apply online and pick up a temporary membership card from the main desk as membership packs are taking ages to come through at the moment.

I haven't been to the V&A but I saw it in Paris and it was AMAZING, I would highly recommend it if you are remotely interested in fashion. It is just stunning. I took my mum who makes all her own clothes and she spent hours examining the seams and all the tiny details.

I am tempted to go over to London just to see it again, like others have suggested I'll go for membership. In Paris there were queues around the block for 'day of' tickets. It was such a huge and detailed exhibition that a couple of hours wouldn't do it justice, you need to take your time and soak it all in.

I went in Paris and again in London last week and it was so much better in Paris - the space was better, the setting worked better and it seemed like lots of the dresses I liked best weren't there. It was far too busy too. However, it was still good and I'm going again - if you're a member you can book for early weekend mornings in April and May when hopefully you'll be able to see things past everyone's phones! Worth bearing in mind if fashion is your thing that the Mary Quant exhibition will open in April so you could do both if you get membership.

Saying that, is it still sold out now that they've extended the run?

I would recommend it - it is a big exhibition (my Mum and I were in there for 2.5 hours) but we enjoyed pretty much every bit of it - if you have an interest in fashion there is pretty much something for everyone, from the original aesthetic of Dior himself, to how that was interpreted and developed by the designers who took the helm at the house after him.

My favourite part was spotting which outfits were looks from the collections, and which had been made for actual clients who were clearly not model shaped.

If you combine it with a (pricey) tea at a couple of hotels you can get Anytime tickets and apparently they're also releasing new tickets on the 15th of each month?

mummyonline yes you can go any time, you just show your card (with ID). From the website it looks like you can take up to 4 under 18s in for free!

I went last week. They have 150 tickets to release every day at 10 am. I was told if you're there by 9.30 you won't have a problem getting one (unless lots of people read this!)
I got in no bother.

I've got membership and I had to queue last Friday afternoon for about 15 mins. It was so worth it though, as it is absolutely beautiful. I loved seeing the miniature versions of the outfits/gowns in the Diorama, and then seeing the full size versions of a couple of them also on display.

As Swirlette mentioned, they are doing some Members Only entries early mornings in April and May - I've booked to go again on 4 May. Likewise, I'm hoping to be able to take it in a bit more without everyone's phones. I'm hoping I may be able to do Mary Quant on the same day which on their own will make the three visits worth the price of my membership so that may be the way to go.

When they announced that the exhibition was being extended to October they said tickets would be released on the 15th of each month - this was to prevent the same thing happening again, ie all the tickets being sold out immediately. This is in addition to the tickets released at 10am every day. I expect they'll do a 24 hours opening as it gets near the end (as they did with Frida Kahlo). For anyone interested in clothes or fashion, the exhibition is absolutely a must see.

Just checked the website - it's sold out until 1 September. Later tickets aren't available yet, so you could wait until 15 April to try again.

Thank you for adding more information to this thread, really helpful and good to hear your experiences. In London next weekend so won't be able to wait for the 15th. Need to decide on queuing in the hope of a day ticket or membership. Definitely want to go though.

I’m a member and went the week before last. I arrived at about 2 pm. There were two queues one for prebooked tickets and the other for members. They were limiting to letting about 15 people in at a time. I waited about 10 mins.
The exhibition was crowded, made worse by people who didn’t understand how to behave in a crowded exhibition, but that’s another subject!
Just to mention, if you’re a member you’re asked for another form of identification. Some people must be sharing their membership.

Definitely agree about people in a crowded exhibition which is why I'm hoping that it will be better when I go in May.
