I thought I would post on this thread, given your interests.

Really want to go to this exhibition but missed the tickets. Living hundreds of miles away makes planning the trip particularly limiting.

On the website it says that some tickets are on sale at 10.00am 'on the day' every day. I could try this but would appreciate any wise words from anyone with any advice.
Has anyone bought tickets on the day?
Was there a long queue? Did you try and miss out?

It would be one thing to travel and queue for tickets if there is a fair chance ( lots of tickets available) but quite another if there are very few tickets to be bought.

Some things that happened.
Don’t wear a backpack and not consider anyone standing behind you when stepping back or turning round.
Don’t stand right up to the exhibit; don’t stand in front of the explanations of the exhibits.
Don’t talk loudly, sharing your opinions.
When in a crowded slow moving line, don’t get out your phone and have a text conversation with someone so holding everyone up.
Maybe I’m being over sensitive, fair enough.

beebumble not just you, I had to show ID last week too - the attendant said it was because people have been sharing their cards.

Agree with all of your list except the talking, I love overhearing people's stories at things like this! I'd add don't have your phone out taking pictures of every single thing (or doing an Instagram live with your commentary as one woman did...) - I want to see the exhibits without having to navigate people getting the right angle. I loved that the V&A didn't let people take photos in their exhibitions before, but they seem to have changed that for this.

swirlette · 28/03/2019 09:19

And OP just to say that you can always see if you get the tickets on the day and then go and sign up for membership there and then if they're gone I think, pretty sure people were doing that both times I've been recently.

Betty777 · 28/03/2019 10:48

Can anyone give advice on what kind of times are on offer 'on the day'?

I can be there by 9:30 ish to queue, but would need to get offered a slot to be in by around noon, as I need to be done in time for afternoon school pick up (there is only one one day each week when I don't work)

Considering buying membership but reluctant to spend the money.....

Beebumble2 · 28/03/2019 10:52

Membership does allow you free entry to all the exhibitions for the year, to use the members cafe, study room and there are day/ evening events.
The events are really only useful if you live near London.

Yes, the need to take photos of absolutely EVERYTHING (including the explanations) did my head in - fine to take a few photos (I did myself) but have some consideration for the rest of the attendees! It was especially annoying when you could tell people weren't really looking at an item, just taking a photo.

I don't mind people talking really - yes, annoying when people bellow, but I find other people's insights and explanations quite interesting - my Mum is pretty knowledgeable about dressmaking and needlework in particular, and I could notice several people near us hanging back to listen in when she was explaining or pointing something out to me.

I had to show ID as well, and there was someone signing up for membership when I was picking up my card from the members desk.

I do love the V and A.
I got my money's worth with Bowie and Alexander McQueen.....nine times and six times Grin
There is a lovely Italian restaurant over the road

MinesaPinot · 28/03/2019 13:24

Lungelady Where is the lovely Italian and what's it called? I'm always looking for somewhere nice to eat after the V & A but invariably end up in Comptoir Libenaise by South Ken Station.

Mummyonline · 28/03/2019 14:04

Can someone confirm if you can take a 12 yr old in for free with the £70 membership card?

yesbutnobut · 28/03/2019 23:06

Mummyonline yes, as a member you can take under 18s in for free. It says that in the small print on the website.

yesbutnobut · 28/03/2019 23:13

Yes you do need to show ID in addition to your membership card - they've been doing this for a while.

iwantavuvezela · 28/03/2019 23:17

I bought membership so as to see the booked out Frida Kahlo show. I will now use membership to go to this exhibition, and if I do one more show I would say I'm evens! You also get 10%off in the shop with your membership!

yesbutnobut · 30/03/2019 15:52

iwantavuvezela you'll probably want to see the Dior more than once it's so good. There's also Mary Quant which has just opened. So I agree with you, it's easy to get your money's worth from the membership.

museummumblog · 30/03/2019 20:28

When I went yesterday they had sold out of day tickets (this was 11am). They were checking members ID and there was a 20-30 min queue for members to go in. Takes about 2 hours to see it. It's a fantastic exhibition, a real treat.
If you work in museums I suggest getting an ICOM card. It's taken at the door (no ticket needed) and is accepted worldwide. Plus on Paris you can join the priority queues at museums with it!
