What is wrong with this outfit?

Hoping to get some style advice ..

I am looking for a knee length houndstooth skirt. I can't find one that is flattering on me.

Today I tried on this outfit at H&M but cannot put my finger on what is wrong. Is the shape of the skirt not flattering on my pear shaped hips? Is it too small? The size up was too big at the waist.

Should I be looking for a-line skirts?

Or should I be avoiding tucked in shirts? I feel like I don't have a waist when I wear a skirt and top.

Usually I stick to dresses or jeans and tops, but I'd really like to do something new. I really like the colours of this outfit and wish I could find something in those colours, but more flattering to my hips / waist.

Any advice is much appreciated.. thank you!

I agree with pps, the length isn't right, the fit isn't right. There's no fixing this to make it look 'great', I think.

While you're looking at other stories, I'm a similar shape OP, and I recently bought this skirt. When I see it online it's not great but irl it's v nice on me and my hips. They do it in black, and this colour which might be nice for summer. I have it in black.

TeaforTwoBiscuitOrThree · 08/03/2019 09:47

I think it's too long.

Aaaahfuck · 08/03/2019 10:01

Is the top navy and skirt black and white? I have personal (perhaps odd) vrule about not wearing navy and black together. Perhaps a black top?

GeorgeTheBleeder · 08/03/2019 10:14

I love black and navy together! It feels so subversive ...

StellaRockafella · 08/03/2019 10:18

When it comes to clothing, wearing black and navy together is one of the chicest colour combinations there is!

You have a great figure. I dont think the flap design across the front is doing the pencil skirt any favours. I agree it would be nice if it were just a little longer.

SrSteveOskowski · 08/03/2019 17:48

It's not you OP. It's H&M and their shitty shitty sizes. I'm a 6-8 in most shops. In H&M I can anywhere from xs (which I think is about a 4) to a 12. With the exception of their long cardigans and stretchy lycra skirts, I've given up on H&M.

XingMing · 08/03/2019 18:48

I don't love the flap button front. It would be better simpler. What about buying the size up and getting it tailored to perfection?

It's not about your body, which looks fab/trim, but about the way the skirt is cut. It would crease through wear in the wrong places, and therefore it wouldn't last very many months.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 08/03/2019 18:50

We've done that skirt XingMing. Done and moved on.

XingMing · 08/03/2019 20:25

Soo, sooo sorry!

XingMing · 08/03/2019 20:28

@GeorgetheBleeder, Humble Bleeding apologies. And where do you put your finger when you post?

XingMing · 08/03/2019 20:30

I didn't realise it was a restricted conversation, given that it's MN.

Youngandfree · 08/03/2019 20:32

Choose navy or black...not both

I think the top could be more fitted.

Powernaps · 08/03/2019 21:06

Horizontal creases across the hips/thighs/tummy means it's too small, but if the next size up was too big then you're between sizes!

CountFosco · 08/03/2019 21:27

Great figure OP. Agree skirt is the issue due to length not being right. And I'd hazard a guess that if it was made of better quality materials it wouldn't pull over your nonexistant tummy. Look elsewhere and get a midi.

Babygrey7 · 08/03/2019 21:27

Hmmm, I have similar figure to yours

For me that skirt would not work

I have some wool a-line mini skirts from Hobbs that work for me

And just over the knee pencil skirts, but they are from just below belly button to just over my knees

I can't wear "real"midi's though even that is fashion as it does not suit me

Maxi works for me too (but very old hat now)

This length and cut works well on slim pears, IMO

You look great. If the top part is slightly tight, can you move the buttons just half a cm on each side? It will make a big difference. You have s lovely feminine figure.
