What is wrong with this outfit?

Hoping to get some style advice ..

I am looking for a knee length houndstooth skirt. I can't find one that is flattering on me.

Today I tried on this outfit at H&M but cannot put my finger on what is wrong. Is the shape of the skirt not flattering on my pear shaped hips? Is it too small? The size up was too big at the waist.

Should I be looking for a-line skirts?

Or should I be avoiding tucked in shirts? I feel like I don't have a waist when I wear a skirt and top.

Usually I stick to dresses or jeans and tops, but I'd really like to do something new. I really like the colours of this outfit and wish I could find something in those colours, but more flattering to my hips / waist.

Any advice is much appreciated.. thank you!

This skirt might be better. The one in your photo is rather dated. And an odd length, as pp have said.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/03/2019 21:44

And this would look more business-like and current.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/03/2019 21:49

More casual, patterned.

RogueV · 07/03/2019 21:54

You look great!

StellaRockafella · 07/03/2019 21:58

OP you're in the refitted H&M on Cheapside! It's such a clever shop fit in that it makes everything look a million times more expensive than it actually is. I found myself having a proper browse because it's so much nicer than it was previously. I think they've tailored the product selection better too as it's definitely more in keeping with the area.
One downside to the refit is that it's a little disorientating as it's far too similar to & Other Stories, and kept thinking I was in there.

The skirt is ok but as others has said, not quite right for you. The waist needs to be a little higher and the length a little longer. It's also just that bit too narrow across the hips for you but as you've said, the next size up was too big.

ShortandSweet96 · 07/03/2019 22:01

You either need black heels and/or shorten the skirt. If no heels then you need to loose the black tights and swap them for tan tights.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/03/2019 22:11

Shock No human being should ever wear tan tights!

StellaRockafella · 07/03/2019 22:15

^^YES!!! Absolutely not.

FindPrimeLorca · 07/03/2019 22:18

Ooh, they’ve refitted Cheapside have they? Must go look. I think it’s a nice enough skirt but it’s a crucial quarter size too small. Also I agree that black tights look wrong but it’s too short to wear bare legged in the office.

MumUnderTheMoon · 07/03/2019 22:27

It's the skirt length it either needs to be just below the knee or be shorter what about wearing it with a red top?

Rafabella8 · 07/03/2019 22:33

You have such a beautiful figure but honestly - the skirt is too tight and too short. Sorry.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/03/2019 22:35

Hmm At least read the OP's posts!

PreseaCombatir · 07/03/2019 22:41

Do people really see this skirt as short?
It’s knee length, that’s not short?!?

StellaRockafella · 07/03/2019 22:44

It's not the it's short, it's more that the skirt isn't a good length on OP - it either needs to be shorter or longer.

SteelRiver · 07/03/2019 22:48

I think a long necklace would look great with that top, OP. I wish I could wear tops like that.

Redorangeyellowgreen · 07/03/2019 22:51

I agree with the PP who said it doesn't sit right at the waist. I think a higher waisted skirt would look better with your figure OP.

Very difficult to find skirts which fit right on the hips but aren't then too big on the waist, if you're a pear shape. I have that problem!

goose1964 · 07/03/2019 22:59

I thought the first photo was unflattering as your stomach stuck out, then I realised that it was a tiny bum.

Notbarbie85 · 08/03/2019 03:01

Presea The reason people are saying it’s too short is that it’s long for a short skirt but too short for a pencil skirt which I think it’s trying to be.

Decormad38 · 08/03/2019 04:14

Jigsaw do some really nice A line skirts and they are a great fit.

Cuch · 08/03/2019 04:37

It’s slightly too small

You need to go either a little longer or a little shorter

It looks cheap - if it fitted perfectly it wouldn’t be obvious that it was cheap but it doesn’t.

However, I do think the style suits your figure - the above are the problems, not the actual style on you.

Handbag101 · 08/03/2019 07:30

Sorry to hijack the thread but I preferred the old H and M in Cheapside. I don't like the new one. Just waiting for someone to smash the vases with their handbags...

Justonemorepancake · 08/03/2019 07:34

A bit too small across hips and bum. Pencil skirts should hit just below the knee caps. The shape of the skirt doesn't work if it's shorter and becomes unflattering.

leasedaudi · 08/03/2019 08:38

Aww @goose1964 you've made my day 😂

@GeorgeTheBleeder thank you for those links; I've never even seen "and other stories" before. I really like those skirts!

Its a pleasure!

I think & Other Stories is under the same ownership as H&M. You may also like Arket, which is slightly upmarket of the former two.
