Pinafore dresses - yes or no and what shoes?

I've seen a lot around at the moment and think I quite like them. What do you think? Should I go for it? Or are they awful? Would it look okay with tights and ankle boots?

OP posts:
lifebeginz · 04/01/2019 08:47

I seen a lovely one. I loved it. It was on the mannequin with a polo neck underneath. So i tried it on, with the poloneck as I hate my arms (and it is winter) and I swear I looked about 12! i think they look great on some people though I obviously just do not have the look for them. Try one on and see how you like it. I think they can be quite versatile!

Flannelled · 04/01/2019 08:57

I love them but just look daft in them. I've seen some people looking great in them.

Beamur · 04/01/2019 08:59

I think they look good on children, skinny women and women who can put together an eclectic look. I can't wear them!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/01/2019 09:00

Polo neck, woolly tighs, chunky flat shoes.

MeOldChina · 04/01/2019 09:39

Round neck or polo neck long sleeved black top, black opaque tights and flat or chunky heeled boots

ShirleyPhallus · 04/01/2019 09:40

I think they look gorgeous but as a large busted, large hipped, small waisted hourglass they basically make me look about twice the size I am and like I’m wearing a sack

If anyone of this body shape finds one that’s flattering please do let me know!

RussellSprout · 04/01/2019 09:40

Only if you're super slim or under the age of about 12.

chipsandgin · 04/01/2019 11:07

Oh dear! I’m 47, 6’ & a size 14 with big boobs & a small waist, so basically none of the above & I own four pinafore dresses! I wear them with long sleeve tops, opaque tights & DM’s - I’ve had more compliments wearing them than anything else the last few years. Clearly I’m probably making people think I look silly, luckily that doesn’t bother me! Go for it OP. Also to pp who was looking for the flattering ones....I find the minimally embellished (no buttons down the front, no stitching at the waist etc) are best - they skim over a tummy & accentuate the waist & make legs look slim if you wear thick opaques. Something like this...

Chewbecca · 04/01/2019 11:09

I love them and would wear with thick tights and suede Chelsea boots.
But they make me look even shorter and dumpier than I really am (quite an achievement!) so I don't.

Sorry - clicky link didn’t work...

Pinafore dresses - yes or no and what shoes?
TisConfusion · 04/01/2019 11:13

I wear them all the time! I'm late twenties, 5ft3" and wear a 14. So yeah not super slim or under the age of 12...but I'd like to think I don't look awful in them!
I love wearing them though so don't really care what others may think. Just go for it OP.

ShirleyPhallus · 04/01/2019 11:33

@chipsandgin

I’ve tried those on but find they sort of bend at the waist and make my boobs look even bigger. Or even worse, my boobs creep out from either side of the panel and so I look huge.

My gorgeous size 14 friend wear them easily without looking like huge. Very envious of you and her for having curves and being able to wear them in a flattering way!

Stopwoofing · 04/01/2019 11:44

generally though, for hourglass, i love a shirt dress with a good fabric or otherwise, belt. I do love that seasalt pinafore though.

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/01/2019 11:48

I have a few, wear them with long sleeved tee, tights and boots in winter, summer ones, short sleeved tee, bare legs and converse

TheLastQueenOfPop · 04/01/2019 11:58

I love the idea of them, however as a short size 18 all pinafores make me look potato shaped.

PhilomenaButterfly · 04/01/2019 12:01

I don't think anyone should wear a pinafore dress past primary school.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/01/2019 12:17

They can look really good.

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/01/2019 12:18

I'm 41, 5 foot, size 6-8 with tiny boobs.
They seem to suit my shape.

KittyLikesMagic · 04/01/2019 12:35

Shirley I am an hourglass and have [this www.simplybe.co.uk/shop/black-ponte-pinafore/AP916/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=8015&promo=6202&cm_mmc=GOOGLE--Simplybe--na-_-PRODUCT_GROUP&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQiApbzhBRDKARIsAIvZue-v9JHgnr4tMrH21cIupDMdhysJ0WE_L35e0sC1ECWOw_KWkaF96EMaAkHrEALw_wcB#colour:Black,size:18] one. It's bloody lovely!

I wear it with a long sleeved slash neck top, wooly tights and either Mary Jane shoes or biker boots

KittyLikesMagic · 04/01/2019 12:36

Oh bugger my link didn't do the thing!

bastedyoungturkey · 04/01/2019 12:41

I’m a shirt size 18 and have two. I’m an Apple shape and large of nork and discovered that the runner material ones suited me better. Cord and denim did nothing for me.

New look have these:

I wear with thick tights and either boots or sneakers. I too have had loads of complements and am warm and smart and comfortable which is a win all round in my book.

bastedyoungturkey · 04/01/2019 12:41

Short size 18. Shirt size 22 - norks don’t fit in shirts.

Littlebelina · 04/01/2019 13:20

They are great for breastfeeding so currently own one despite being neither super skinny or in primary school
