Oh wise people of S&B, please find me a hobo style bag. It needs to:

  • be large (at least approx. 30x30)
  • have a longer cross body strap as well as a grab handle
  • be black, dark brown or oxblood
  • ideally have a zip at the top, rather than just open
  • be leather

I feel like I’ve looked everywhere!

I’m wondering whether a trip to Bicester Village might be needed. I’m only about 20 mins away but I’m not sure I can face the hordes of tourists and sale shoppers!

I know lots of people like Coach, it’s just a personal thing I guess - I can’t get excited about them. But tbh I feel the same about Osprey as a brand - I like my bags from them, but I don’t love them IYSWIM.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 30/12/2018 19:52

Might be worth a trip to Bicester although i know what you mean about the crowds.

You might get lucky and find an Anya Hindmarch maxi zip satchel!

HettyB · 30/12/2018 22:24

I would love your thoughts on these (good and bad!)

  1. Coach Chelsea 32 black: www.monnierfreres.com/uk-en/hobo-bag-chelsea-32-in-leather-c17a87.html?sel=4638&sku=COA007009
I worry it might be a little small...
  1. The same in Oxblood: www.monnierfreres.com/uk-en/chelsea-32-hobo-bag-CONFIG_COA009030-co.uk.html
  1. Osprey Andorra - too big maybe? But I like the different compartments for organising my crap: www.ospreylondon.com/andorra-italian-leather-hobo-black?refSrc=15601&nosto=nosto-page-product1
  1. Osprey Cambridge - this is probably the closest to what I imagined I’d buy, but it is pricey... www.ospreylondon.com/the-cambridge-leather-hobo-black?refSrc=13863&nosto=nosto-page-product1
  1. Pittard’s Heritage Bucket - expensive, and doesn’t have a top handle or a zip closure www.pittards.com/shop/heritage-leather-bucket-bag-black
  1. A random wildcard choice I found online. Cheap as chips but there’s something about the way the handle attaches that looks a bit cheap to me... www.pelletteriavittorio.com/language/en/shop/carla-3/

Will have a look at the links, but just had a thought - have you had a look at the Outnet?

Also worth checking to see if TK Maxx has anything good in their sale.

ChishandFips33 · 30/12/2018 22:54

I can vouch for Fossil hobo bags but mine are a few years old so probably not available now - I have this in black. The leather is gorgeous and soft

The Madewell bags are amazing! I've just bought my second, they do come from America, but are well within your budget for literally the perfect leather bag. They have a few different styles, this zipped one is one I bought this year, and I've not used anything else since. Just bought a summer coloured pink one to use come spring time! www.madewell.com/the-zip-top-transport-carryall-H2584.html?dwvar_H2584_size=ONE%20S&dwvar_H2584_color=BR6755&cgid=accessories-bags&position=10&position=10&activeChunk=1#start=1

ChishandFips33 · 30/12/2018 23:02

Black

I fold mine over backwards when not caring much so handles aren't covering the front

There are some Coach Scout hobo bags in black on eBay - they got fab ratings last year when they went in the sale

Sadly nothing I like in my price range at the Outnet. I also can’t find anything I like at Fossil or Madewell!

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 30/12/2018 23:25

I think of the ones you linked I would probably go for the Osprey Cambridge.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 30/12/2018 23:29

Oh, just remembered, a few years ago many on S&B were quite enamoured with a company called Peony Moore. If I recall correctly they had some nice hobo/satchel styles at the time and I think the quality was very good for the price. I’ve never had any so can’t vouch for longevity and so on, but might be worth a look?

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 30/12/2018 23:33

Scratch that! They have ceased trading...

HettyB · 30/12/2018 23:34

I saw that thread too Holger. Sadly they stopped trading a couple of years back. I did find a website which purported to sell one of their bags, but it seemed to be a middle-man type site which placed an order with the designer for you, in which case I suspect it wouldn’t work...

I’ve got several Osprey bags and they have worn well. Also Ridley have some hobo bags. Are you anywhere near Portsmouth gun wharf outlet? They have coach, Osprey, furla, Kate spade, fossil and Michael Korda

storynanny · 30/12/2018 23:41

I’ve just bought a similar Osprey to one of the links reduced to £75 at gunwharf

NikiFree · 30/12/2018 23:41

I bought myself the [[jackson street quincy
www.katespade.co.uk/en-gb/handbags/shoulder-bags/jackson-street-quincy/PXRU9421-001.html Kate Spade Jackson Street Quincy]]

It is gorgeous.

I got it on sale in a department store for £165 but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere else at that price.

SpiritedLondon · 30/12/2018 23:42

Why don't you try Etsy? There are plenty of craftsmen making leather goods and if you can't find exactly what you want you could request a custom order.

Bottomplasters · 30/12/2018 23:43

How much was the cheap as chips Carla? Can’t see a price but loved it

NikiFree · 30/12/2018 23:43

That link didn't seem to work.

try again

HettyB · 30/12/2018 23:56

Bottom it’s €79 (plus €10 delivery - annoyingly delivery is free over €80!)

So that’s about £80 all in. Much cheaper than any of the others which is tempting, but I have no idea about the quality of the bag or the reputation of the company...

slinkysaluki · 31/12/2018 07:01

Modalu ?

SpeckledyHen · 31/12/2018 07:29

Bicester Village is fine if you get there when it opens - or earlier and have breakfast first as the eateries open first . You get first pick of the goods without the crowds and get away by the time they all pile in .
The sales assistants have time to spend with you too .

hp2 · 31/12/2018 07:43

Fossil bags last well, the maya hobo comes in 3 different sizes and looks very similar to the Osprey Andorra.

HettyB · 31/12/2018 07:55

hp2 I do like the look of the Maya, but the long strap is only leather on the small version, which I think is too small for me, and I don’t like the canvas strap.

Speckledy that sounds like a good plan. Sadly it wouldn’t work for me as I couldn’t go until I’d dropped DD at nursery. They open later on Tuesdays but she doesn’t go to nursery that day. I suppose I could take her with me but herding two toddlers in Bicester Village might be a recipe for disaster!
