It's a very nice posh black dress with a little shrug black jacket - was thinking of jazzing it up with heels etc and a bright pashmina. I mentioned it to a friend and she is horrified and am now having a crisis of confidence. Please let me have your view - I am feeling fat pale and frumpy, am comfortable in this and am really not up to looking for a wedding ourfit

I think that's fine. I wore a black dress to a wedding and got gasps when I said I was wearing it. But in reality lots of people wore black but obviously not funeral style.

I hate superstition. What is it supposed to mean? That you're trying to curse the marriage FFS!

Go ahead and wear it. I'm sure you'll look great!

lyrabelacqua · 21/06/2007 10:51

As long as you've got colourful accessories it should be fine.
Black on it's own might be a bit weird.

Diplidophus · 21/06/2007 10:52

I have worn black a few times. I always jazz it up with some bright accesssories.

Mainly as my only posh hat is black with an orange trim!

I agree - it sounds lovely.

hat? buttonhole?

I much prefer it to seeing people wearing white = apart from the bride of course

dontwanttogetoutofbed · 21/06/2007 10:52

its not a nono.
if you ask me black always looks good.
but its summer so you might want to ad some colorful accessories?

hermykne · 21/06/2007 10:53

my mother is going to one in france next week and shes wearing black, she wore black to my wedding and she did look a bit melancolic,
so for this event i have gotten her to change her hat!

i think black with a small amt of antoher colour whetehr its bag and shoes, hat, corsage, top under the dress for modesty, whatever will lighten the effect .

choosyfloosy · 21/06/2007 10:53

IMO White is the real nono.

Sounds great the way you are going to do it.

I've worn a black dress to a couple of weddings - didn't think anything of it. Much better to wear something you feel comfortable in than worrying about what anyone else thinks!

You'll look lovely.

MrsBadger · 21/06/2007 10:54

sounds fine but beware of bright colours with black

zookeeper · 21/06/2007 10:56

thanks for your comments - I'm really out of the loop on dressing up and feel very mumsy

Was thinking of lime green scarf and necklace

sounds fine to me

2 people wore black at my wedding, one had white jacket and accessories, and one wore silver shoes, silver bag, back wrap with silver detail etc...
both looked absolutely lovely

I agree that I'd be careful of bright colours with black.

goingfor3 · 21/06/2007 10:58

Men can wear black suits without any one giving it a second thought so I don't see why you can't.

mylittlestar · 21/06/2007 10:58

although lime green sounds like it would work actually

NKF · 21/06/2007 10:59

Posh black dress sounds lovely but a little like evening wear to me.

slug · 21/06/2007 11:02

I wore black to my own wedding.

CatIsSleepy · 21/06/2007 11:06

me too slug...
black and gold

go for it zk, nowt wrong with black

zookeeper · 21/06/2007 11:08

It is a day wedding and it is definitely an evening dress - it has a snmall diamante square at the waist and has a layered below knee hem

I know it sounds foul but it isn't!

OP posts:
CatIsSleepy · 21/06/2007 11:12

sounds glam...
maybe pale blue or v. pale pink accessories?

tbh i hate choosing wedding outfits, i find it an absolute nightmare and always have a crisis of confidence...

if you've found something you like and feel good in you're doing well IMO!

MrsBadger · 21/06/2007 11:17

metallics with black an excellent idea

I've worn black and white and black with pastels to weddings before. Both gone down well.

MrsBadger · 21/06/2007 11:36

I was thinking bronze or pewter

TheApprentice · 21/06/2007 11:37

My Mum wore a black suit as mother of the bride. It did have a cream trim but otherwise totally black. And very classy she looked too!
