Coloured tights

What do people think generally of tights in colours other than black? I like a coloured tight myself and have them in dark red, dark green, charcoal grey, purple, navy... I wear them particularly with shoes that aren't black, as I don't like black tights with, say, brown boots. But a colleague remarked to me the other day that they look a bit like fancy-dress, so now I'm wondering if they're too childish for a nearly middle-aged woman to be wearing! Anyone else experienced this?

I have hot pink! I wear them with black heeled boots, black mini, black roll neck jumper, and a smart fitted black jacket, and pink gloves. Keep makeup and jewellery to a minimum and you can make it work.
Never put brown with green; then you will look like a pixie.

yumscrumfatbum · 01/11/2018 16:47

I love coloured tights, I have purple, maroon, brown, blue and grey. Green csn be difficult to pull off. I have a mustard pair that I haven't worn I feel like a banana in them but I will brave them one day!

Strippervicar · 01/11/2018 16:52

I love them. They always add a lovely pop of colour with a black dress/skirt on a wintery day.
Having said that, I was banned from wearing them in one office job. Ffs.
Do it , OP. People who comment negatively are just jealous or boring. My primary headmistress used to wear cerise pink tights and a matching scarf. Or turquoise or burgundy or er orange. I still think she is the most glamorous person ever.

DameSquashalot · 01/11/2018 16:58

I always wear coloured tights. Black is really boring to me. Somstimes I probably look clownish because the tights don't match the dress (I never notice until I get to work), but who cares?

Glitteryfrog · 01/11/2018 17:06

I like coloured tights with denim dresses. Navy tights with brown ankle boots.
But I hate black and denim.

endehors · 01/11/2018 17:15

I avoid the fat minstrel look by avoiding stripey tights worn with pantaloons, and only carrying my lute if it's a jeans day.

Grin I wear all colours. Though today I'm wearing grey in a herringbone pattern. I've found most of mine at White Stuff. I also like fairisle and patterned tights (also White Stuff). I wear with long suede boots and skirts. On colder winter days I layer long patterned Avoca socks over them (you can only see part of them under boots)
endehors · 01/11/2018 17:18

Actually I don't have a green or bright red pair. I do have three pairs of black with tiny coloured flecks, and another with (subtle) gold glitter. No plain black owned. All White Stuff again!

Girlwhowearsglasses · 01/11/2018 17:20

Bloody love them! I lament the loss of American Apparel as their coloured ones were the best.

I match them to my outfit. Not remotely childish. Unless you only ever wear brown or black they out your outfit together properly. Also if you ever wear coloured shoes black tights are a bit of a non entity.

Lwmommy · 01/11/2018 17:22

I have burgundy, purple and charcoal thick tights from Snag which i love. I generally wear with black boots and a black or charcoal dress so think it adds a nice pop of colour

KeysHairbandNotepad · 01/11/2018 17:22

I have green, I feel like a leprechaun in them. I've not figured out how to style them yetSmile

Bestseller · 01/11/2018 17:25

I don't wear black so I always struggle with items that are "always" black like tights. I've tried various colours but not afraid I do feel like a small child/fancy dress costume in anything except navy.

It looks like I've gone out of my way to be wacky"

MelanieCheeks · 01/11/2018 17:29

Love them, particuallry in muted autumny colours.

This week I have worn:

checked brown/ mustard mini skirt with olive green tights and tan ankle boots
Cath Kidston dress in dove grey/ navy/ pink with charcoal grey tights and brown knee boots

Navy and white M&S dress with navy tights and navy shoe boots.

M&S do good 3 packs of muted toning colours (claret, aubergine, olive, grey etc)

I'm in my 60s and like coloured tights. Not particularly helpful but I have bought quite a few pairs in Poland where a lot of women wear them. Poland is also good for cheap, colourful gloves and felted hats if you fancy a shopping trip, I'd recommend Gdansk.

fleuriepeninsula · 01/11/2018 18:05

I wear coloured tights almost exclusively (navy and brown mostly) but I think you need to match the tone to either your shoes or to your skirt.

Red skirt/mustard tights/navy shoes is a bit much unless you have the personality to match.

3TresTrois · 01/11/2018 18:09

Not for me - I even feel weird in grey or navy tights - but I’ve seen other women wearing them and looking great!

notsureIsignedupforthis · 01/11/2018 18:37

Ive been looking for some decent coloured tights, just ordered several from the tightstightstights link posted thank you

Doobigetta · 01/11/2018 19:18

I like navy, burgundy or purple. Tesco F&F do good ones- nice and thick and soft.

GraceMarks · 01/11/2018 19:25

Feeling really inspired by some of the outfit combinations people have described here! Today I wore a black dress with white polka dots and a burgundy cardigan, and matched my tights to the cardi. Tomorrow I'm going to wear a charcoal grey knitted dress with my lighter grey cable knit tights and black boots. I'm also going to check out Tights tights tights and get myself some teal ones, as those are about the only colour not represented in my wardrobe at the moment.

I love wearing coloured tights!
This year i have the plain knit ones from Fat Face which i recommend.
I have teal green, burgundy, mustard and navy and I wear them with brown ankle boots. I have dresses in navy, teal and denim to wear with them.

KeysHairbandNotepad · 01/11/2018 19:40

The teal ones are my favourite. I've got the most wear out of them , they're very versatile.

Fresta · 01/11/2018 20:29

If I’m wearing a dress with navy in then I wear matching navy tights and shoes. The rest of my tights are black. I’m really not a fan of the black dress with bright tights look- it’s very dated in my view and something you only see on older women who think it’s a bit quirky.

Odiepants · 01/11/2018 21:23

Just as well I probably fall into older and a bit quirky then as I love coloured tights. I wouldn't consider navy to be coloured - that's just the same as black really.

I mainly wear purple or burgundy tights with grey or denim dresses/skirts. I haven't got green ones to work so well and I haven't been brave enough for yellow yet.

TheClitterati · 01/11/2018 21:44

I got some mustard/yellow opaque tights. I've seem
Many pics of stylish women wearing them online etc. But when I put them
On I felt like Marge Simpson. 😊

I like darker coloured tights though. Still working on the brights.

GraceMarks · 01/11/2018 21:48

Odiepants I don't understand why it's acceptable to wear trousers and skirts in every colour under the sun, but when it comes to tights, even navy is outlandish and daring. It's just weird to me.

JaceLancs · 01/11/2018 21:49

I’m fairly boring and stick to black or navy although I have some charcoal grey as well
If I could find a dark enough teal that might tempt me too
