Does anyone remember that fabric that changes colour depending on what angle you look at it from?

I want to find a shirt in this, for my father. I know, it's not really style, but I don't know where to put it.

I've tried looking for iridescent shirts, but that seems to just generally mean shiny shirts (and women's ones too, helpfully).

Anyone have any suggestions?

Oh, and just to keep things easy, I need it in a 2XL sort of size.

We always called them two-tone but dh refers to the material as "tonic". HTH

JackieNo · 16/06/2007 20:53

It's called 'shot silk' I think.

skirmish · 16/06/2007 20:54

i know exactly what you mean, but can't think what it is called... i remember old - fashioned ball gowns made from it that changed from lilac to green etc etc

sorry, not much help

PinkChick · 16/06/2007 20:55

shantung(sp) silk?

NorksDrift · 16/06/2007 20:55

Do you mean Thai silk? That can come in a sort of two tone effect.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/06/2007 20:58

Oh, yes, shot silk would do it, but honestly, it needs to be something hard-wearing, got to be machine washable etc. (And does anyone make machine wash shot silk shirts in 2XL?)

Don't think I've seen them called two-tone, but will try searching under that.

It does seem to be called iridescent on ebay. But it's mostly women's clothes.

do you mean those shiny shirts that were in a couple of years ago? they were always purpleish or brownish?

AttilaTheMum · 16/06/2007 21:00

Do you meantaffeta?

It's been around a while - it's mentioned in Twelfth Night

"Now, the melancholy god protect thee; and the tailor make thy doublet of changeable taffeta, for thy mind is a very opal!"

JackieNo · 16/06/2007 21:00

Also called 'changeant' I think.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/06/2007 21:03

Not taffeta! This is for a men's shirt!

Yes, SEA, they were in a few years ago, and years and years ago.

Definitely "shot" silk/satin etc-just not sure where you would get one in that size.

Oooh, changeant, despite not even vaguely looking like a real word (at least in English), seems to be hitting paydirt! Thanks!

No, it's just clothes for Indian clubbers. And lots of French webpages ...

OP posts:
BettySpaghetti · 16/06/2007 21:12

I've always known it as "tonic" (like williwonka said)

NotQuiteCockney · 16/06/2007 21:19

Ok, tonic seems to be working out, I'm finding lots of mod clothes. I don't think my dad cares about the style and colour - and surely, by now, there must be some fat mods, right?

Hmmm, still no luck, but I've found some funky big clothes, anyway, that he might enjoy.

my boss used to wear a purple changing colour shirt, with matching tie. he looked like a quality street.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/06/2007 21:37

Oh god, I'm not saying this is a look I like, but my father doesn't really care about fashion, and really adores these shirts.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 16/06/2007 21:38

like this one?

NotQuiteCockney · 16/06/2007 21:47

OMG! That's excellent! How did you find it? Looks like they misspelt iridescent ...

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 16/06/2007 21:50

Oh, duh, and searching title and description ...
