How can I stop washing my hair so much?

I have quite fine hair, but lots of it. However it only looks good when I wash it, by the morning it’s lank and greasy and all kinked and horrible.

I’d love to get out of the vicious cycle of washing it every day but don’t know how.

I try to wash every other day, and use dry shampoo in between but that makes it feel horrible.

Could you tie it back or clip it up on the second day?
Your hair sounds similar to mine. I hate dry shampoo so don't use it. But I'll use mousse instead - feels horrible too!

MoltonSilver · 13/10/2018 18:51

I haven't tried it myself but I believe a silk pillowcase can help.

Dermymc · 13/10/2018 18:51

I got mine down to twice a week. The less you wash it, the more it lasts between washes. Usually mine looks better down with dry hair shampoo so I do up on day 1 (less likely to keep touching it) followed by down for 2/3 days with dry hair shampoo on day 3 and 4. Honestly your hair gets used to it.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 13/10/2018 19:02

My hair is exactly the same, for me to get 2 days out of my hair before I go to bed I will put dry shampoo in then, if i did not do that then my hair would be the same as yours in the morning, lank and greasy! when I do the night before dry shampoo trick often my hair is better on the second day than the first, the secret with dry shampoo I find, is to spray at the roots with your head upside down then put you hair in a loose ponytail with one of those bands that leaves no kinks.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 13/10/2018 19:03

I have tried that dermyc epic fail I’m afraid my hair never got used to it sadly.

Branleuse · 13/10/2018 19:05

try the elvive clay shampoo. My daughter can get at least an extra day out of her hair when using this

Dinnaehinksae · 13/10/2018 19:09

With the dry shampoo i dunno when you use it but if you spray it in your hair at night before bed in the morning your hair will look great and won't feel as though you've used dry shampoo. I too have fine hair and this certainly works for me.

dancemom · 13/10/2018 19:16

Yy to the Elvive Clay shampoo, it definitely helped my greasy roots

Clarabelle40 · 13/10/2018 20:11

I have fine hair and used to have to wash it at least every other day. A few weeks ago I squeezed out far too much shampoo (a handful) and just thought sod it and used the lot. I didn't have to wash my hair for 4 or 5 days! I had always been told to use approx a 10p piece size amount of shampoo, but that's rubbish! Use a good handful - apologies if you already do and it's just me who got to 40 something without knowing how to wash her hair properly Blush I now only have to wash my hair twice a week at most Smile

SayNoToCarrots · 13/10/2018 20:12

Dry shampoo makes my hair sticky so I use talc instead. I pat it in, leave it for a bit then brush it out.

shirleyschmidt · 13/10/2018 20:17

Same hair as me, OP 😩 I'm in a cycle of everyday washing too and feel a bit of a tramp without doing it. Definitely going to try the Elvive Clay shampoo as suggested by PPs and will be watching this thread 🤞

Angbunnyboo · 13/10/2018 22:40

I do two shampoos per wash then condition and I can go three days without washing, but I do use dry shampoo on the third day.

Bestseller · 13/10/2018 22:44

I hate hair that isn't washed, it itches.

I exercise a lot too. I don't understand how people can shower after the gym and not wash their hair, you can wring mine out after a session on the treadmill.

Regardless, if I've washed it in the evening after a run, I'll still wash it in the morning.

Dragongirl10 · 13/10/2018 22:49

not sure why anyone would avoid washing their hair when they shower or bath, surely it feels much nicer to have properly clean hair...

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 13/10/2018 22:55

Dragongirl- my hair simply takes so long to wash and dry, I don’t have time every day.

I’ve started using the new herbal essence bio renew shampoos and conditioners. I can get 3 days out of my hair without dry shampoo

Thundertoast · 13/10/2018 22:56

I broke out of the same cycle by: picking a weekend when i didnt have much on and washing it on the friday then dry shampooing until the monday morning, then from then on i do it every other day. I always find the more you wash the more it needs washing so you have to break the cycle by forcing it to be greasy a bit.

Second, completely get you on the kinks - what works for me is once i've washed/dried/styled it, i use the Tresemme freeze hold hairspray (white can) all over then let it completely dry (important - normally brush my teeth while im waiting) at this point you should have helmet head Grin then brush through. Gets rid of the helmet-y feeling but always seems to keep my hair looking the same into the 2nd day. Bit of an odd approach I know but does the trick!

Icequeen01 · 13/10/2018 23:01

I have very fine hair too and wake up looking like a scarecrow. There is no way I can't wash it everyday as I also have to use a bit of Argan oil and hair mousse to get any sort of style. If I just wet my hair in the shower then blow dry it I end up with so much product in my hair it looks awful. I also worry that my hair smells. I'm going through the menopause and the night sweats are awful 😡

ILoveDaveGrohl · 13/10/2018 23:09

I'm the same and I've heard about 'training' my hair lots but I can't stomach the greasy head smell on the pillow :( I suppose I could change it everyday. But then there's the itchiness and the obvious greaseball head. My mate has thick hair that she washes every 10 days and it holds a curl. Jammy cow Angry

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 13/10/2018 23:13

I also have fine hair, I just wash it every day. I read that it’s actually more damaging to leave it greasy than it is to wash and dry it every day, which was what I was worried about.

spanishwife · 13/10/2018 23:17
  1. Clarifying shampoo (L'Oréal clay as suggested or the pantene one that's clear and has bubbles on the bottle)
  2. Repeat the wash once rinsed out
  3. Only put conditioner right on the ends
  4. No additional product e.g. blow dry spray or mousse
  5. Clean your brushes regularly with fairy liquid
  6. Try not to touch your hair
AhoyDelBoy · 13/10/2018 23:29

I wanted to stop washing my hair everyday so on a trip to Thailand I seized the opportunity. Not washing my hair and swimming in the sea - five years on I still have the dreadlocks to remind me Grin
Honestly, I’ve said this a few times on here but I really recommend baking soda and apple cider vinegar. I only have to wash my hair once a week now and I live in a hot climate.

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 16/10/2018 18:47

I solved the problem & bought a hat! Grin

That'll do it Grin

MikeUniformMike · 16/10/2018 21:26

Get a really good cut. Don't play with your hair if you do. Try going without washing it when you don't have to.
