Birkenstocks? Are they the same sort of thing as Crocs?

i.e the world's most comfy shoe to some, the world's worst fashion nightmare for others.

I (ahem) own a pair of Birkenstocks but they are looking a bit ropey. Not sure I want another pair (feel they belong to a too lazy to care phase) but I do want a comfortable pair of quick, let's get to school shoes. Beach shoes, casual back garden shoes. Crocs are out of the question for obvious reasons so what is there? Or are Birkenstocks still okay. Were they ever okay. I don't know. Decisions decisions.

I think Birkies are okay, they have a sort of timeless appeal. Personally I think they're kind of ugly but wish I could wear them. I had some but just looked like I had a couple of barges attached to my feet.

brimfull · 08/06/2007 20:30

mine are ugly but I don't care for some reason unlike my other sandals which I caer deply about

Nbg · 08/06/2007 20:31

No I love love love my birkies.
They are bright orange.
Look fab with baggy jeans.

coleyboy · 08/06/2007 20:34

I lurrve my birkies, and I still think they look kind of cool - if worn with the correct outfit.

HenriettaHippo · 08/06/2007 20:51

I LOVE my Birkenstocks. I have moss green Madrid ones and pink thong ones. I couldn't care less if they were cool or not. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. MUCH more attractive than Crocs (which I don't understand at all).

katz · 08/06/2007 20:57

i love my birkenstock but i have really nice ones these

LynetteScavo · 08/06/2007 20:57

Birkies are briliant.

So many styles and colours to choose from!

BishyBarneyBee · 08/06/2007 21:03

FFS! these!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 08/06/2007 21:11

I like my comfy Birkies. Definitely not elegant, perhaps a bit insipid, but at least not so in-your-face ugly as crocs either.

katz · 08/06/2007 21:14

theres some nice designs this year, just wish i could justify a new pair!

i like the rimini, salamanca (in black) as well as the tabor

here is good for them birkie shop

brimfull · 08/06/2007 21:15

NKF · 08/06/2007 21:29

Katz - I saw some of those prints ones that look so lovely on the website. IRL the colour isn't so vibrant.

BishyBarneyBee · 08/06/2007 22:11

but ggirl htey were the only ones that didnt look like cornish pasties.

Thought they were a bit 'rocket dog' n'est pa?

squidette · 08/06/2007 22:14

I love my Birkies - i buy three pairs each year and they are they only shoes i will wear from April until October, apart from rubber flips. I am normally barefoot so they are great when i need to wear shoes (for other people most of the time....)

QVC online has the best selection of unusual styles in the UK i think - great 'Birds and Flower' Catalinas and some super cute Flower Power Betulas with a flower printed footbed.

BishyBarneyBee · 08/06/2007 22:22

ggirl I think hell for us would be a life with each other's shoes!

brimfull · 08/06/2007 22:49

bbb=lol at cornish pasties
I do love birkies, but mine are so not attractive on me.

NKF · 09/06/2007 08:27

Where's the cheapest place to buy them. I'm sold back on them.

LIZS · 09/06/2007 08:44

How does the sizing come out - if I'm normally a 3-4 do I get a 4 ?

NFK - i know that TKMaxx often have Birkies at either half price or a third down from RRP. But the choice will be limited, but that might be ok depending on what that choice is! I bought my patterned Catalinas and a pair of plain coloured Relax single bar like these a couple of months ago.

Astrophe · 09/06/2007 09:25

I have these birkenstocks , which I love, but as I have big feet they do look pretty massive. I think they would be lovely on a smaller footed person, but I still think they look ok on me. Far more understated than crocs, which, IMHO make people look a bit like fashion victims.
