Winter 2018/2019 -- death of the skinny with big sweater. What the hell do we wear for tops

Dustbunny1900 · 24/08/2018 18:00

So going off another thread..it looks like the reign of "skinny jeans/jeggings with large oversized top" is out.

Fall/winter 2018 seems to have much baggier roomier jeans..high waist of course. mom jeans, boyfriend jeans, drop crotch, carpenter, oversized straight leg veering into flares/and the silhouette seems to be either short/cropped and boxy or long and relaxed and slouchy. LOTS of cuffs on pant legs.
What about tops though? What's the silhouette supposed to be then? In the noighties it was big bell bottoms skimpy tops and the opposite was true in the 2010s but now it almost looks like shorter boxier crops, and high waist boxy jeans?
Seems kinda shapeless. Looking through google gives me nothing but crazy runway looks.
Especially with winter coming on, what's the over all look?

I suspect bodies, or other sleek tucked in tops.

Dustbunny1900 · 24/08/2018 19:13

What's a Bodie? Sorry, haven't gotten used Tom all the British terms yet!
Seems a lot of layering too, happening under the cropped tops?

A body is a bit like a leotard or a swimsuit! Although sometimes the top half is shaped like a shirt. They have poppers where you don’t want poppers.

In the 80s we wore cropped loose tops with baggy trousers- I’m thinking that “I think we’re alone now” singer I think (can’t blinking google at the moment as top of phone screen buggered!).

Oh god, please not the return of the body.

They were impossible after a few wines....and so unflattering unless you're skinny!

ChimesOnSundayMorn · 24/08/2018 19:47

I think we're about to see less jean!

Dresses, skirts, culottes and maybe a mix of jean shapes.

TheMarbleFaun · 24/08/2018 20:28

I agree with Chimes
I feel a bit dated in jeans now so think we're going to see more culottes and looser trousers

Judydreamsofhorses · 24/08/2018 21:13

I wear slightly cropped - on the waistband - jumpers with mom style jeans. (Always a vest underneath,no danger of stomach flashing.). I have never worn big baggy tops/jumpers with skinny jeans, though, and tend to always wear things that sit above my hip bones. Per PPs, I wear a lot of culottes. In winter I wear fishnet or crochet tights underneath so there’s less of a chilly gap.

QueenofLouisiana · 25/08/2018 00:26

If bodies are coming back I need to adjust my planned weight loss by another 2 stone.

How will the baggier trousers work with the longer length blazers I’ve seen (and bought-eeek!)?

Ellapaella · 25/08/2018 10:02

Bodies = thrush
Horrible things.
Agree with @Judydreamsofhorses that slightly cropped loose jumpers and t shirts work well with high waisted trousers/jeans.

LostInShoebiz · 25/08/2018 10:59

All these loose and flared jeans look great in a shop but they drag. First wet day will see us all back in skinnies tucked into boots.

At some point people removed their hats, found it was so much more practical and hats never came back for day to day wear. In the same way, I can’t see the demand for skinnies (or at least tuckable in jeans) going without a massive shift in the climate.

LostInShoebiz · 25/08/2018 11:01

Also, beware of cheap bodies. I bought a cheap one that had no poppers. Yes, to go the bathroom you either had to undress totally Angry or hold it to the side a la Spanx. Envy (vom, not envy)

Mrsramsayscat · 25/08/2018 11:08

Also bodies used to feel uncomfortable when you were wearing them, like knickers being pulled up all the time.

Floisme · 25/08/2018 11:11

The practicality point may be correct but I think it's being overplayed. Cagools are practical too, as are anoraks and fleeces.
Skinnies have already gone out of fashion twice in my lifetime. Even in rainy UK, people eventually get bored and move on.

nellyolsenscurl · 25/08/2018 11:11

The bodies and cropped jumpers/top a look great if you are thin. On someone like me with extra belly rolls and no just they are a public order offence. I need the length!

Floisme · 25/08/2018 11:15

But to go back to tops, I imagine we'll just see them gradually getting shorter and more fitted as the emphasis moves away from arse and thighs and up to the waist. H&M have got some new shortish jumpers in with a knot detail at the waist. I've heard talk of wrap tops making a comeback though I haven't seen any in the shops yet. The longline blazer thing is interesting - in the 80s wide trousers and wide jackets were a thing too so we may see both going on.

wizzywig · 25/08/2018 11:18

Poppers where you dont want poppers. God i hated bodies

ThriceThriceThice · 25/08/2018 11:18

My 16-year old DD has bought some bodies so I can confirm they are a ‘thing’ once again, but I’m far too old for all that faffing about my undercarriage every time I need the loo.

I am also worried about winter - as I’m tall, I love drapey and flared trousers - but this is the UK FFS - damp and puddley does not work with floor dragging trousers.

Boots and culottes / midi skirts?

wizzywig · 25/08/2018 11:18

Im seeing loads of yellow/ mustard. Is it colour of the year?

Floisme · 25/08/2018 11:22

When the weather turns, I'll switch to slouchy trousers that taper towards the ankle, 80s style. I've always liked that look and it's puddle proof. And I wear more skirts and boots in the winter.

SoupMode · 25/08/2018 13:27

There are loads of crop tops in the shops, and bodies or very tight fitting tops. No good for me, I'm in my 40s and not as toned as I once was :(

On the bright side shorter style (but not crop) tops and jumpers do look better than long baggy ones on short arses like myself.

No idea where to go with trousers though. I have a hard time finding trousers of the right length as it is. Culottes or anything that cuts off mid calf look hideous on me.

I remember in the 90s when it was all wide legged jeans I gave up on trousers and just lived in mini skirts and dresses (which weren't as short on me). Only got back into them again when skinnies came back in.

WhatAmISupposedToBeDoing · 25/08/2018 13:34

So what sort of skirts will we be wearing? (I say 'we', like I'm a fashion follower 😂 )

herecomesthsun · 25/08/2018 15:17

Bodies - not good, esp with a long torso

Wrap tops - fine if they are secure

Baggy hipped trousers - fine if they come in to show off your 24" waist, not so good if your waist has increased a bit over the past 30 years.

I'm thinking dresses and midi skirts look like a good option Grin

Peanutbuttercups21 · 25/08/2018 16:05

Paperbag trousers left right and centre, with wide tees tucked in the front

Increasingly I feel I can't handle fashion anymore. I sort of gave up and even ordered a Boden dress (says the work experience kid:"hey, you dress just like my mum" yeah, that is probably about right Grin)

So I am out, and just wearing dresses now (Joules, Boden, Baukjen, anthro, vintage Toast and am now eying up Cos!)

Trousers and fashion be damned Shock

Dustbunny1900 · 25/08/2018 17:48

Thank you ladies! Yes I’ve seen wide legged culottes and wide cropped pants with boots so maybe that’s the answer to the wet winter problem?
I was a teen of the noughties so vividly remember dragging around my bell bottoms and jnco jeans in the slush Grin no thanks!
I read gathered and pleated wrap tops making a comeback too
