What's wrong with my nail?

PizzaAndChips · 20/08/2018 20:46

Hello all. Not sure if I have posted in the right place or not, but I am after some advice. For the past year, my middle fingernail has curled down on one side whenever it gets a little bit long. I've attached pictures to give some sort of idea.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do to stop it? I wasn't sure if it was linked to the acrylics I had on (very briefly) last year, but then as it's only on the one nail, that doesn't make sense to me.

Don't worry, that's not clubbing (the sign related to cancer). It's also atypical for koilonychia, or spoon shaped nails, which is what people are saying is related to anaemia. My daughter actually has similar shaped nails on all her toes, has done since birth, and it's weird but not pathological. Hope that helps!

PizzaAndChips · 21/08/2018 16:50

Thanks, @muddiecuddles , I wasn't so concerned after I looked up the clubbing, but all signs do point to anaemia. I do need to get booked in for a blood test so I'll just have to call again tomorrow morning Angry

@PizzaAndChips did you manage to get in for a blood test?

Thismummyruns · 22/08/2018 20:58

Would be interested to know as my finger nail on the same finger also does this when it gets longer.

I don't wear Acrylics.

fenneltea · 22/08/2018 21:04

My nails did this with anaemia, so I'm sure that's a strong possibility for you too.

MoltonSilver · 22/08/2018 21:45

I had a nail like that for a couple of years. It's normal now. I had totally forgotten about it until I saw your photo. I have a tendency towards low iron so I'd say its that.

HoleyCoMoley · 22/08/2018 21:48

Just below your nail is there a teeny little swelling on that side of your finger, is there one on the second finger opposite, I got told you can get callouses and funny shaped nails where you hold a pen.

MoltonSilver · 22/08/2018 22:11

You're right holey, the nail I had that was like that was the finger a pen would lean against. I was studying at the time and writing a lot. I think you're on to something,

Jupiter9 · 22/08/2018 22:59

Needs cutting

PizzaAndChips · 23/08/2018 09:15

I called the doctors yesterday- again, no appointments. Today I have been given a triage callback so they can book me in for bloods (why is everything so convoluted?!).

@HoleyCoMoley - I had a look at the way I hold my pen but it's definitely not that causing it. Good suggestion, though.

It'll all soon become clear Grin (...maybe)

6th September for my blood test. Sorry, ladies, you'll be left in suspense until then Hmm

Interesting, I have exactly the same on exactly the same finger. Please do update once you’ve been to the doctor?

Ohyesiam · 25/08/2018 00:14

Doesn’t look like clubbing to me, but need a side view to say 100%

PizzaAndChips · 25/08/2018 10:50

It's not clubbing, I'm almost certain of that, but have a look at the brand new shiny picture! I shall, of course, report back once I've had my blood tests.

Good luck for tomorrow!

PineappleLava · 05/09/2018 21:07

Wow - I have the same nails! I’d always assumed it was genetic, for some unknown reason.
Please do update when you find out what the issue is.

Just marking my place. One of my nails grows just like that. Has done for as long as I remember. I keep my nails short though, so no point in posting a pic for a few days, though I will do if this thread lasts long enough.
(Middle finger, right hand - I am right handed)

1frenchfoodie · 06/09/2018 01:59

One of my mum’s nails grows like that, always has. Middle finger right hand. She had anemia at one point but it was unchanged by the medication and after 60+ years it is pretty clear cancer hasn’t been the cause.

PizzaAndChips · 06/09/2018 06:44

Thanks, @stabilo88 !

My nails are annoying me more every time I look at them now and someone at work said they look funny Hmm

There are much worse problems to have, I guess!

@PizzaAndChips - did you ever get an answer re your nail?

maddjess · 13/09/2018 21:04

Oooo any update?

PizzaAndChips · 13/09/2018 21:23

They lost my flipping blood (WTF??). Had more taken today. I was told I should probably get a call on Monday and if I hadn't heard from them in a week then I should assume nothing is wrong or they've lost my sample again and neglected to inform me.

Sorry ladies, I'm keeping you all in suspense! My nail is looking more ridiculous by the day Grin

Well I got my phone call this morning. Turns out my iron levels are in the "normal" range. The only thing that's lower than expected is my vitamin D.

Maybe I just have weird middle finger nails. The mystery goes on!

hendricksy · 15/09/2018 08:29

Dunno but I would cut them short .. then I'm sure they will look ok .
