What's wrong with my nail?

Hello all. Not sure if I have posted in the right place or not, but I am after some advice. For the past year, my middle fingernail has curled down on one side whenever it gets a little bit long. I've attached pictures to give some sort of idea.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do to stop it? I wasn't sure if it was linked to the acrylics I had on (very briefly) last year, but then as it's only on the one nail, that doesn't make sense to me.

Oh Christ...... My 3yr old daughter's toe nails do this SadSadSad

Not her finger nails though, bizarrely

DropZoneOne · 15/09/2018 10:14

My index fingernails do this, have done for years. I'm not anaemic (have been tested a few times, pretty much whenever I tell a GP I'm vegetarian) but my vit B and D levels tend to be on the low side and I'm terrible at taking supplements.

WhoisEdgar · 15/09/2018 10:26

My middle finger nail also does this when long. I always thought it was because the nail is soft and gets bent against the palm of your hand when the fist is closed? I'll try and attach a pic to show what I mean.

It's a strange one. I honk I definitely need to improve my diet regardless of the results. I'll see if things change once I sort out my pizza obsession Grin

My mums nails do this too. Don't know why either. Weird.

stabilo88 · 16/09/2018 17:41

Interesting, my vitamin D levels are low too and I’m supposed to take a tablet (but never remember!). Perhaps it’s linked to that then?

PizzaAndChips · 16/09/2018 17:44

Take your supplement and let me know if things change Grin could be onto something!

This happens to a couple of my nails, I assumed it was because I had bitten them for about 13 years.
I just thought some form of damage must have happened to the nailbed causing them to curve a bit once they grew over the free edge.

Thalassemia does run in my family though so maybe time to go get tested ☹️

PizzaAndChips · 17/09/2018 16:45

Yeh, I'm not a nail-biter so I can definitely rule that one out Sad

This happens to me too, on both hands on the same finger
I thought it was because the bit were the nail attached to the nail bed is slightly shorter on one side so it grows a bit wonky.

This happens to me and I am anaemic! Interesting, I didn’t know it was related.

Julia2022 · 21/01/2022 17:05

It's not clubbing. Clubbed nails are different.

The lack of information on these swooping nails leaves a lot of potential variables and causes.. Based on my experience, I would wager it is the effect of vitamin D and calcium deficiency. Pregnancy can take a lot of precious resources out of you and I did see that you blood work showed low vitamin D.

I had nails like this for years and didn't know why.. But in all that time I had avoided the sun or used plenty of sunscreen and stayed in the shade. Eventually I began my career in soil science (don't ask lol), where I am in the sun for large portions of the day. I slowly noticed my teeth became less sensitive, my nails straightened and became stronger, and I experienced fewer headaches.

I would absolutely recommend trying to get midday sun frequently as well as eating calcium rich foods. Please! Make sure to address the vitamin D deficiency first and foremost! Without it increasing your calcium intake will be futile as it is essential for absorbing the calcium.

Of course this is not a definitive reason for the swooping of nails since I have no research or quantitative findings to conclude such, but hopefully this helps someone for whom this is the cause.

So I know this post has been dead for a while, but maybe about 7 years ago, I developed the same exact thing. I thought it was a genetic thing, but since i didnt always have it, i also suspected otherwise. I never saw a doctor for it, but August 2023 I got blood work done and I was deficient in Iron, Vitamin D, and B12. I saw that you were taking a hair, skin, and nails vitamin, but if you're deficient, those types of vitamins aren't enough. I was prescribed Vitamin D2 and started taking B12 and it seemed to fix 4 of my nails (I had this happen to 6 of them). Currently, only my pointer fingers are like this and I'm also anemic. And I had some fibroids removed. I'm taking a low dose iron supplement to see if that helps get my iron up, but I'm really sure that this is an iron deficiency. Definitely NOT clubbing, it doesn't even look the same. I'm posting this just so maybe other people can have some clarity, even though I don't have all the answers. Oh, and I'm not pregnant and I never have been.

I have the exact same 5hing on right hand, middle finger. In my blood work last year, there was an issue w my red blood cells being low. The tests were for something else. I have lines down my nails too.?
Good luck...
