Barbour waxed jackets

Are they worth the money? Will they go with dresses, tights and boots in winter (literally all I wear). Saw a woman wearing one a floral lined was jacket which looked lovely as it was quite worn in, I'm guessing it was Barbour but I didn't notice a logo. On the website they look stiff in the photos, do they take a lot of wearing in? Thanks all

Anyone?

Had a waxed jacket way back in the 80's when they were everywhere. I'd lusted after one for ages but once I had it I never liked it. It was heavy and always felt damp to wear. It hung around for a year or two and then I got rid. Wasn't a Barbour though. Maybe they're a bit more user friendly but I'd advise trying before buying.

I bought one last summer, I wouldn’t say it was rigid when I bought it and they do soften with wear. You need to take care of them, I’ll be sending mine away to be re-waxed next summer. I wear mine with near enough everything, dresses, skirts, shirt & jeans. I would always recommend them to anyone who will listen Grin

I’ve got a few and love them - there are different weights of wax.

Peoplemaynoticeus · 15/08/2018 14:48

Kicking myself that I didn't ask the woman what jacket hers was. It looked really lightweight, had a good, floral lining and was waist length. It was lovely and I would have paid her to take it off her back Grin

There are a range from joules and crew clothing (I think) which are wax but not Barbour. Love my Barbour though- wear it with everything and everywhere!

ElspethFlashman · 15/08/2018 15:18

That was probably a Liberty X Barbour one, with a floral lining.

I have one and whilst it has its place, its not perfect. They're not breathable, so get sweaty if it's any way humid. Also definitely don't withstand any heavy rain.

Basically I wear mine in that funny season when it's too chilly for a denim jacket but not cold enough for a coat.

If you do get one, get one that covers the bum and has a hood. More practical. The pockets are fantastic, you could carry a small child in them they're so big. Mine was never stiff, it was always comfy in that way.

I got mine on a website called town and country or something similar - they always have a sale. Would not pay full price tbh.

ElspethFlashman · 15/08/2018 15:20

(Actually like mine the most going to the pub, it's really handy in the evenings when it's chillier and you can just stuff phone, wallet, keys in the big pockets)

RiskIt4Biscuit · 15/08/2018 15:41

They soften very quickly, but they do have that smell of wax - some people hate it, I love it.

However, I don't think they are worth it. They look lovely though.

I have had several Barbour jackets, and so has my dad, and they really don't last for ages. The fabric tears after a few seasons in my experience and end up looking really ratty.
If you wear the jacket at lot, you will have to reproof at least once per season to not get soaked - there is nothing more annoying than getting caught in the rain with a jacket that needs reproofing.
I've always done it myself, which is a bit of a faff, but they do offer to do it - I just don't have the time and patience to wait for the jacket to be sent off, be reproofed and sent back.

And make sure you don't get one with polyester lining anywhere - it is so uncomfortable as the skin can't breathe in it.

ElspethFlashman · 15/08/2018 18:03

Oh how do you do it yourself? I really need to do it but cannot be arsed to send it away.

WatercolourFlower · 15/08/2018 18:09

I got one last year, liberty x Barbour waxed jacket in the navy blue. I love mine, didn't need any wearing in. I ordered mine for £60 cheaper in the Black Friday offer. Mine is so comfy, don't know what I'd do without it now.

peonylover22 · 15/08/2018 19:02

I’ve had my Barbour Liberty jacket 6 years now. I absolutely love it but only wear it in the country on weekends, so it’s still wearing well. The only annoying thing is that I could not find a hood lined in the matching fabric. Maybe I could get a tailor to reline my hood? It does bother me Hmm

Would it matter that I'm not a dog walker or a walker in general? I just really like the look of the jacket (I do live in pembrokeshire though) ConfusedBlush

They smell though a bit. I have a couple of barbours I no longer wear as I class them with jack wills but maybe I'm being horrible.

katmunchkin · 15/08/2018 19:12

I have a wax Barbour with floral lining -it could also be the 'Rachel' x

Cakefairy1978 · 15/08/2018 19:26

Love my navy wax barbour. Its realy warm with big pockets. Floral lining too. I wear it with jeans brown boots and scarf.cant wait for autumn

luckycat007 · 15/08/2018 19:49

I LOVE them. But they do get tatty over time as others say. I like the international range.

Sweetsongbird1 · 15/08/2018 19:51

I have a wax Barbour jacket and there was no warmth with it at all. I ruined it by putting it the wash because it stunk after a bonfire 😭

Haberpop · 15/08/2018 20:09

I love mine, I am not a dog walked but I do enjoy a long walk.

Cismyass · 15/08/2018 20:27

Crazyspaniellady are you me? Grin My preaching the gospel of a good waxed jacket is legendary. I also find they make excellent gifts! Grin

applepinkierainbow · 15/08/2018 21:42

I have this but with a floral lining (sadly they no longer do the floral lining) but I love it as it is fitted in all the right places, has huge pockets, goes with everything and has a brilliant detachable good. I constantly get asked where I got it and it looks like new though is 5 years old now. From welligogs

applepinkierainbow · 15/08/2018 21:42

*hood!

Peoplemaynoticeus · 15/08/2018 22:36

Ooh that is lovely

@Cismyass Grin My preaching has backfired slightly as both DM and DGM have bought one, DM’s is exactly the same as my own Envy

namechange2pointoh · 15/08/2018 22:55

Were they not fashion a few years back?
