Can you fight curly hair?

I'm naturally curly and have embraced it for years but struggle to make it look nice. Thinking about trying for a bob but it might look shit. Maybe I just need a good cut but no matter what I do or try it just looks bloody awful. And yes I've tried the curly girl method.

Don't fight be frizz is my motto .. I have curly hair and love it !! 🤗🤗

Namechangeforhair · 28/07/2018 18:50

How do you manage it? My hair is also thin. It used to be really thick!

Don't fight them! The problem with curls is that everyone's are so different that you need to find the right technique for you and yours. Although to be honest I wouldn't say a bob to a hairdresser, a bob is a cut that's generally the same length the whole way round. That doesn't work well for curly hair usually as it can end up very bottom heavy. Show them the length you want it instead but you would probably want it chopped into (just slightly if your hair is quite thin) so the curls aren't weighed down.

Sorry I've not made myself clear. Currently I embrace my curls. My hair is layered and is just below my shoulders and it's curly. But it looks shit. It's gone very thin for lots of reasons which doesn't help.

But I was thinking of having it cut shorter all one length and trying to wear it straighter. Does that make sense?

Nope. Don’t fight. But do get a new cut. I’ve gone graduated bob and I love it. It’s quite short at the back but longer at the front.
Find a new style. But keep the curls.

stayfit · 28/07/2018 21:25

I find the more I straighten it the heat makes my hair looks drier and more frizzy. I now use oils overnight and wash it following day. Also reduced washing to once a week which helped. The curly girl methods didn't work for me too but I might try it again after a few months.

I also tried keratin stuff but it's made my hair look too thin and doesn't last more than 12 weeks.

What oils do you put on your hair

Mine’s curly although still thick. I accidentally got it cut into a bob and although I’d like it longer it does work better in this style. So I’d say have a good chop.

TigerDroveAgain · 28/07/2018 21:30

And second oils. Anything really but I like the Elvive ones, not pricey.

Namechangeforhair · 28/07/2018 21:31

The thinness is depressing. And when it was shorter it looked shit too. Fed up with it. :( it never looks nice.

Try the curly girl method - no shampoo or silicones. Can transform your curls.

littlecabbage · 28/07/2018 21:43

There are loads of videos on YouTube on how to style curly hair - that really helped me to learn to style my curls.

Namechangeforhair · 28/07/2018 21:49

Heavenlyeyes I tried the curly girl hair method. It didn't help.

That's a good idea littlecabbage hadn't thought of that.

Will have a look at elvive oils. Thanks.

I have coconut oil from Holland and Barrett. But I used some left over olive oil too before and that also helped. But I need to do it more regularly. I tend to leave it overnight with a shower cap and wash it following morning with any shampoo. I also leave it little on dry ends. Took a few weeks to see the difference.

Namechangeforhair · 28/07/2018 22:00

I've got some coconut oil might try that. Thank you.

Your hair sounds like mine OP. sadly I have never liked my hair thanks to fashion as mine has never been able to do in latest styles. Now I keep telling myself just to be glad I have some hair still. I spray a leave-in conditioner on after towel drying and let it dry naturally . Looks reasonable (I hope). I do try not to look at it too often.

HoneyDragon · 28/07/2018 23:07

Curly here. To be none shit with my hair it has to be one length. It needs weight. If anyone points scissors at me and suggest layers I will run away screaming. I only co wash and then leave in conditioners. I don’t fuck about with plops or casts and stuff.

I had mine all lopped off. Also, despite having naturally curly hair I do occasionally get it permed to keep the fuckers in line.

Namechangeforhair · 28/07/2018 23:17

That's interesting honey dragon never thought about getting a perm.

OP posts:
HoneyDragon · 28/07/2018 23:19

The way I see it people with naturally straight hair have treatments to make it straighter. Ergo I can perm my hair to make it tidier.

Bugjune · 28/07/2018 23:25

Have you ever tried a keratin treatment? Won't get rid of your curls but will make it easier to style straight, without frizz.

hendricksy · 29/07/2018 07:41

Mine is really thick , I like the look of thinner curls because mine sticks out so much unless I sleep on it . Have you tried growing it ? Long curls look lovely .

hendricksy · 29/07/2018 07:42

How I manage it is I wash it , add curl cream when it's soaking wet , towel dry , add a little more cream and diffuse . It's vital the order you do it as its gets frizz when you dry before product .
