Can you fight curly hair?

I'm naturally curly and have embraced it for years but struggle to make it look nice. Thinking about trying for a bob but it might look shit. Maybe I just need a good cut but no matter what I do or try it just looks bloody awful. And yes I've tried the curly girl method.

@namechangeforhair, I used to have long hair which took so much time to smooth with hair drier (never got it 'straight'). I have it much shorter now but I sometimes blow dry the T bar straight. It looks smoother, more styled. But you're not spending hours straightening it.

specialsubject · 29/07/2018 09:13

get it permanently straightened unless you really want to spend 30 mins or. more on it each morning - what a bore.

loreal xtenso or wella straight. smooth hair that can be combed.

Ollivander84 · 29/07/2018 13:42

special - mine is mega curly and I don't spend anywhere near that on it! I don't subscribe to everyone should have straight hair that can be combed. Mine can't be brushed, but it makes it quicker to deal with

specialsubject · 29/07/2018 18:27

fair enough, but having had horrible fuzzy curls for decades, being able to comb and forget is just wonderful. Have round face so short curly hair just looks awful.

only ever looked half decent just after washing, and as I do that in the evening it was all over the shop by next morning. It is just great that someone has invented the choice for those of us with curls.

Namechangeforhair · 30/07/2018 17:55

This is my hair. look how shit it is. :(
It's got blond colours in it at the moment. I just wish I could have a neat straight easy bob. Or long easy straight hair that I could just brush and go.
I'm nervous to do any sort of chemical treatment on it as it's so thin and don't want to damage it further.

One side is ok and the other side is just impossible!

can it be curlier?

mine is a similar length and is also thinning but i am keeping mine at this length for now because the curls sit better when longer (ringlet-y) whereas shorter they become wavy and stick out.

i use John Frieda serum and mousse and blow dry with a diffuser. what do you do?

Namechangeforhair · 30/07/2018 18:28

I wash with conditioner only and dry with a special towel then use a cg approved mousse. It's all curly girl method but isn't working. Yes it defintely needs to be curlier. Maybe I should try diffusing it.

Mine is curly and nightmarish when short, I usually have it fairly long with a couple of long layers which keeps the volume but the weight helps with the craziness. I'm pregnant at the moment and it's growing like crazy so is currently at Rapunzel lengths. I made the mistake of Bobbing it when I was younger, it wasn't easier to manage it was harder, wouldn't stay straight and too short to curl nicely. I never ever blow dry mine unless I'm straightening. Wash, condition, curl creme, air dry. In winter I sometimes turn the blowers up on the car to give it a helping hand.... Almond oil treatment once in a while has helped my frizz too

FASH84 · 30/07/2018 19:45

I tried curly girl for a while but it didn't work for me, I towel dry, brush, let the natural curl kick in (5-10 minutes of just leaving it while I'm getting ready) and then tip my head upside and scrunch the curl creme in. When it's dry a tiny bit of serum gets rid of any flyaways

MissVanjie · 30/07/2018 19:53

I think your hair is nice op, cute waves, nice texture, shiny af.

I'd be thinking texture not curls in your shoes. have you thought of having a fringe? as it's less curly near the crown, a fringe would sit nicely, then ime it's easier to do updoes etc. a shaggy lob like Alexa Chung or some such would look lovely. get or make some salt spray, dampen with that on a morning, twist the sides up loosely while you have coffee/do make up, then let it down and bosh, texture a go go.

happyasasandboy · 30/07/2018 19:59

If you're trying CG method, I recommend switching conditioners regularly until you find one that works.

I was using Tresemme Undone for ages and thought I was getting good results. Then I switched to Garnier Ultimate Blends Cranberry and Argan Oil and it completely changed overnight; so much lighter and smoother!

GoofyIsACow · 30/07/2018 20:02

Do any of you use coconut oil for styling? Or just a treatment?
I find the pink curl cream dries mine out, i bought some curl custard but haven’t tried it yet.

XingMing · 30/07/2018 20:17

First, find a hairdresser that likes cutting curlies, and is good at it. If you achieve this, the rest is downhill. Honestly, the hairdresser who has curls and is over 25 understands and gets it. It really is only about how it's cut, but your curls and mine are not the same, so we may need different approaches. And run, quick as you like, from anyone who brings a hairdryer without a diffuser within 10 feet.

XingMing · 30/07/2018 20:18

If the hairdresser has a good eye and a modern/fashion outlook, it helps enormously. Obviously.

Thesunrising · 31/07/2018 04:14

Find a hairdresser that is either Deva Cut trained or knows how to cut curly hair when it’s dry. Then find a good curly girl method range of hair products. I’m currently using Bouclème - expensive but produces glossy curls.

sanitygirl · 31/07/2018 11:08

My hair is fine and curly/wavy like yours. I find washing with conditioner only doesn't work for me as it's too heavy and weighs my hair down. Same goes for very moisturising leave in treatments (e.g. Boucleme). How about using a CG friendly shampoo and seeing how it goes? At the moment I use either Davines Love Curl (my favourite) or Shea Moisture Fruit fusion, followed by conditioner. I scrunch in a bit of boots curl cream when wet and then just leave it. I'd also recommend finding a hairdresser who is good with curls. If you are in SE London I can recommend someone!

hendricksy · 31/07/2018 11:09

“I find the pink curl cream dries mine out, i bought some curl custard but haven’t tried it yet.“

If you mean the cantu curl custard, i can confirm that it shits all over the pink curl cream, it’s magical.

Ollivander84 · 31/07/2018 15:41

The pink curl cream has a drying alcohol in it

Lalaland44 · 31/07/2018 16:01

I use Aussie shampoo and conditioner products. Then Boots own hair mousse for curly hair. Massage throughout. Turn hair/head upside down and diffuse softly without too much faffing. Scrunch carefully. Leave some moisture in hair. Gives volume and sexy curls. Hair spray to fix a little. I’m alwsys getting nice comments about my hair Grin

Mosmorde · 31/07/2018 16:11

I have thin, curly hair too. I’ve stopped using mousse. I rinse it through in the morning, scrunch with gel and leave to dry naturally. Once it’s dry I tip my head upside down and have a quick scrunch for volume.
