Any fashion you swore you'd never be caught dead in but have succumbed to?

I got Birkenstocks today. Fugly, fugly, fugly but appealing because of it (I love Fly London so it figures). Never thought I would own some but they're purple so I couldn't resist!

Also leopard print. I always thought of Bet Lynch, Liz McDonald, Pat Butcher or Kat Slater. Now I have trainers, a coat, t-shirt, blouse, boots and handbags. I love It!

Are there any fashion items or fads you've bought into despite your better judgment?

I always thought i was too fat for shorts and skinny jeans but actually they suit me just fine. I'm bigger now than when i first thought it as well and once i got over that 'i'm too big/fat/chubby' feeling, i realised they look absolutely fine

I bought a cold shoulder dress. As expected it looked hideous so I took it back but the temptation was there for a minute.

jeanzbeanz · 18/07/2018 00:08

I said I'd never buy a Michael Kors handbag because every chav has one. Then I bought one because it was the only place that sold a bag in a particular colour I wanted. Slippery slope... I think I have four now

Verbena87 · 18/07/2018 00:13

Gold sequinned mini dress (and I love it)

rosamore · 18/07/2018 00:18

I came to say Birkenstocks as well. I bought my first pair earlier today, actually, after hating them for as long as I could remember. I saw them in the shop window and couldn't stop thinking about how comfortable they looked so ordered a pair online. I feel like a proper "mum" now only 6 kids in.

ToastyFingers · 18/07/2018 00:21

Cropped tops.

Admittedly, not the bra type ones, and I'm 5'2 so they're about navel length but they have a much nicer silhouette with high waisted trousers and skirts.

InglouriousBasterd · 18/07/2018 00:23

Yes to leopard print! And also skinny jeans, although I’ve had enough of them now.

Fatted · 18/07/2018 00:24

Hareem type pants. Wouldn't be seen dead in them. Then summer actually arrived and I wanted an alternative to leggings for something cool and comfy when I don't want to get my legs out. I've got two pairs now. DH hates them and I know they're going to the charity shop come September. But who cares!

Whackytaco · 18/07/2018 00:27

Crocs clogs.
Best gardening shoes ever. I have also worn them on the beach.

Sheepskin boots worn outside the house...in public. (I do live in Australia though and it's the norm round these parts).

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 18/07/2018 00:28

A playsuit. I still regret it when I have to go to the loo, but it actually looks very nice on.

Kiwiinkits · 18/07/2018 00:34

Ugg boots.
Best slippers ever.

POPholditdown · 18/07/2018 00:44

Cold shoulder tops here too. I only bought one as the rest of the the shape is nice, so I thought I’d make do with the holes but I just find them stupid. I only wear it with a jacket now.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 18/07/2018 00:46

A big white meringue wedding dress!

Monty27 · 18/07/2018 00:50

I wore coulottes in the 90s. I looked back in horror and swore I would never wear them again and haven't.
I love to see beautiful young women wearing them now and I am not envious not one bit oh no not at all much Smile

pennycarbonara · 18/07/2018 01:12

Ugg type boots - when I realised they could be great as slippers in the winter. Still don't wear them further than the front gate, and they aren't technically Uggs, they are second hand Celt ones.

Blonde hair. It was like an ideological thing. People kept telling me even when I was at school that I'd suit it. But I wasn't a blonde person so of course I'd never do it. Later, meeting, at my old work, a blonde goth who looked amazing in businesswear made me consider it, and then (cliche) a shitty breakup made me go ahead. I've only been on the receiving end of one blonde joke every two years on average so I don't even feel stereotyped. I think hair colour stereotypes have decreased a lot this decade in general because it's become so normal for people to dye their hair all sorts of colours. People aren't bothered about blonde now, they are noticing the ones with pink or blue hair if any.

Laughteronthewing · 18/07/2018 06:47

Pleather jackets, I always said I'd have leather or nothing. They have been brilliant though, I have a couple of them and have spent about a 10th of what I would if I'd bought a good leather one. Eventually I might invest in a good leather one but in the meantime these are fun and I'm not too precious about them, which is helpful when you have small kids.

Floisme · 18/07/2018 07:28

God I'd need a whole thread. Skinny jeans is the obvious one.

MinaPaws · 18/07/2018 07:32

Skinny jeans. I look bloody awful in them, always have done, as I really don't have good legs. But for a while they were the only jeans around and i just gave up searching for ones that didn't turn my legs into over-stuffed indigo sausages. So glad straight legs are finally back in fashion. Boot cut are even worse though. The stocky carthorse look is even less appealing that the blue parsnips.

Etymology23 · 18/07/2018 07:36

Skinny jeans and leggings here, but I still only wear leggings like tights, rather than with a shirt or t-shirt.

nellly · 18/07/2018 07:39

Harem pants!! So baggy and shapeless but oh so comfy Grin

smudgedlipstick · 18/07/2018 07:52

Ohhh I've been eying up a pair of birkinstocks much to my own horror, they look so comfy 🤢

Loonoon · 18/07/2018 09:27

Ugg boots.

And the harem jumpsuit that is currently the subject of at least one thread on here. I opened the thread to mock three weeks ago and I now own 5 of them.

neurotransmittens · 18/07/2018 09:31

Crocs for gardening.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 18/07/2018 09:43

Blonde, curly hair. I was a teenage Goth and straightened the hell out of my hair for years. I went blonde to blend in grey hairs and started letting it dry curly because I couldn’t be bothered with the faff every day.

Skinny jeans - I feared the parsnip look but with the right top and chunky footwear they’re fine.

Birkenstocks — one hot summer spent on my feet all day I cracked and bought some, the relief for my poor overheated tootsies! I have to hunt down my size though as I have teeny feet and few places stock size 35.

Gahbahboo · 18/07/2018 09:54

Dungies. Love them in the cooler months!
