All in one or two piece swimsuit in your 40s??

Lovingholiday · 06/07/2018 22:32

What do you wear?
I like to look classy, so is all in one better option?
I am in my 40s, size 10, not very tonned tummy, boyish figure, small breasts.
Going on a long haul holiday
Can you help me find a swimsuit? I do not mind spending up to 60/80 pounds
Thanks

Having worried, a few years ago, about whether I could get away with a bikini or not I realised, when on the beach, that NOBODY gives a shit what I wear. Nobody was watching me! Likewise, it did not bother me what other people looked like on the beach/around the pool. I had packed a one-piece, but never wore it as it would have revealed my insecurity - that nobody else seemed to have.

Seriously, the only people who are clocked are the beautiful young people with perfect figures and youth on their side, and that's only with a kind of wistful sigh that youth truly is wasted on the young!

If you're worried about walking around in just your bikini, you can get tunics/short kaftans in loose cottons, linen or chiffon to go over it. You can usually find decent ones in TK Maxx.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 07/07/2018 21:16

The thing is, nearly everyone looks awful in any kind of swimwear - so wear what you want.

Racecardriver · 07/07/2018 21:19

Every E without exception looks better in a one piece. Tankinis don't flow as well and bikinis look silly (they're basically just stretchy underwear aren't they?)0

MirandaWest · 07/07/2018 21:23

I’m 42. Went on holiday to Mallorca last year and only wore bikinis - didn’t wear the swiming costume I took at all. Surprised myself as hadn’t worn a bikini for years but was much better.

Racecardriver · 07/07/2018 21:32

Bikinis also have a really awkward effect of cutting up the body visually ki D of like a sausage with two scrunchies on it. Full body swimming costumes don't interrupt the figure as much

blueshoes · 07/07/2018 23:55

I would tend to agree with racecar about bikinis creating more muffin top effects on middle-aged bodies.

NC4Now · 07/07/2018 23:57

If I was a size 10 I’d definitely wear a bikini. At a 14 I’m more of a tankini wearer.

I've got these and they are VERY nice, I'm in my 40's. Lascana bikinis are great IME

See to my eyes those are meh even on the heavily photoshopped model.

Floisme · 08/07/2018 10:51

I've worn a one-piece since I was in my early twenties because I could never find a bikini that fitted and I was sick of all the furtive checking and tugging. But I know some women say exactly the same about one pieces. So I don't really care, but what I do think is that choosing either option because everyone else is doing it is the worst possible reason.

I love my clothes but, as far as I'm concerned, beaches are for playing and reading and swimming and sleeping (in the shade). Worrying about how you look is like worrying about how you look at a football match. No-one cares.

cheeseandgrapes · 08/07/2018 10:53

@SchnitzelVonKrumm what is the meaning of he word "meh" in English?

Ta1kinPeace · 08/07/2018 10:56

Cheap triangle bikinis from decathlon - buy a size too big so they cover a tad more
buy several colours and mix and match every day
I plan to carry on wearing bikinis into my 70's

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 08/07/2018 12:07

@cheeseandgrapes Dull. Uninspiring. A bit Per Una.

PUGaLUGS · 08/07/2018 12:32

I am 53 and always wear bikinis.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/07/2018 12:35

Unless you're a serious swimmer in which case a one piece is way more practical, bikinis are more flattering on most figures.

Nothing will change your shape or completely conceal anything, but that big block of fabric of a one piece is far less flattering than a properly fitting, decent bikini. I think the majority women look better in a two piece, no matter what their figure or size.

The attempt to conceal things nearly always has the opposite effect with swimwear!

MisguidedAngel · 08/07/2018 12:52

I always used to wear a bikini (size 10) but for some reason laid down a rule for myself that when my daughters were old enough to wear bikinis I would move onto one pieces. I did it for one holiday, then realised how ridiculous I was being. I finally gave up bikinis at 70, but would probably go back if I was on holiday somewhere really hot. As pp have said, you see all shapes and sizes on the beach. Take both and see how you feel when you're out there.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 08/07/2018 12:52

Agree with the 'Bikinis FTW' comments. We were at Center Parcs last weekend and the overweight women in the skirted swimsuits/swimming dresses looked so out of place and self conscious, there was a large (size 22ish) lady there in a gorgeous brightly coloured bikini with a fab tan and she looked great. I vowed at that point to get a spray tan and buy a bikini! 👙

TheLuckyMrsPine · 08/07/2018 20:58

I have a really nice bikini (bottoms high waisted, high leg) but am actually hankering after a Hunza G classic one piece ...

I’ve got bikinis for an up and coming holiday abroad and I am a 10/12 and have a few stretch marks too 😱 I have gone for the roll top bottoms as they hide more!

Lovingholiday · 19/07/2018 23:02

Thank you all!! Update - I am on hols now and wearing bikinis and I am so glad I brought them.
To be honest I do not think I would have tried if I did not ask here beforehand so very glad I did.
Went for very basic black ones M&Sbut bra fits me well and gives me some boobs! Which is great as otherwise flat chested Grin

Both! I am 37 and a size 8-10.

I wear Seafolly bikinis and Heidi Klein swimsuits and feel fab in them. At RRP these are above your budget but I promise you will have them for years, so if you see anything on eBay or in the Sales I would highly recommend.

PARunnerGirl · 19/07/2018 23:06

Just saw your post! Happy holidays :) Bet you are looking and feeling fab :)

Lovingholiday · 20/07/2018 00:08

Thank you ParRunner ! Will see those brands. To be honest I was up against with time, so decided to get these M&S as was unsure if I would wear them / remember to exchange. But I wanted better quality so will see them for my next holidays in December as going to the Southern Hemisphere then xx
