All in one or two piece swimsuit in your 40s??

Lovingholiday · 06/07/2018 22:32

What do you wear?
I like to look classy, so is all in one better option?
I am in my 40s, size 10, not very tonned tummy, boyish figure, small breasts.
Going on a long haul holiday
Can you help me find a swimsuit? I do not mind spending up to 60/80 pounds
Thanks

I'd wear a bikini. I wear swimsuits for taking my kids to the pool in the U.K., but bikinis on holiday when we're likely U.K. have a couple of full days by a pool.

If you're by the pool for a big chunk of a day, at some point you'll need the loo and is it not pleasant pulling a swimming costume back up afterwards unless it is completely dry.

Lovingholiday · 07/07/2018 08:38

Thank you all!!
My tumy is not great imo, but I probably do not need tummy control, plus I find that I will very hot in 30 heat with that tight fabric.
I have a lovely whitestuff swimsuit and a boden tankini, but this year I wondered if most people will be in bikinis. I am going to a bit of the Caribbean where there will probably be a number of Americans... or they wear all in one?

blueshoes Looking at the Debenhams one, the bikini version of it caught my eye!
In my head I look like the model 😆
I might still order it and see how it looks.

Marcia I chuckled when I read that you misread as tonned tummy 😂😂

minionitis oh, yes before DC I used to wear these tiny pieces, and as I know I do not look the same as before I kinda lost confidence...
Lovebeingamum I will look at tesco...looking right now!

I am thinking ordering a couple of bikinis to try, and perhaps putting some tanning lotion on tummy to see if a golden skin improves the look (here is me wishing)
I might bring the bikini and a couple of all in one piece as a back up... well I like swimming a lot so I know I will also be jumping on waves and snorkelling with the children so I might need both!

I'm 44 and always wear a bikini. I'm size 12 and 5'11" and one pieces are just never long enough for me. They look ridiculously stretched and awful. My tummy isn't toned but I don't have stretch marks and once I have a bit of a tan it looks good ish

tierraJ · 07/07/2018 08:41

I'm size 12/14 & 41 - I wear a bikini.

I'm in Crete & the majority of women of all sizes, ages & nationalities are in bikinis.

It's too hot for a swimsuit tbh

dementedpixie · 07/07/2018 08:45

I'm 44, size 36GG with size 20 bottoms and wear a bikini.

To pp who says they wear 34A at size 8, you are most likely wearing the wrong size if I wear a 36 back at size 20/22

OnlyMakeBelieve · 07/07/2018 08:55

I'm in my 50s with much the same figure (only with hips) and I bought a tankini thinking the same thing. But then I was on the beach and I actually felt a tit for not wearing a bikini. I'm still taking my tankini with me next time for swimming or going for a walk/lunch, but I'm also going to buy some bikinis.

Doje · 07/07/2018 09:00

I have just been on holiday. I made the wrong decision and wore a one piece! Everyone was in bikinis! I'd say about 90% or more.

I'm 38 and size 12/14 for reference.

nowayback · 07/07/2018 09:07

In a similar situation. Were off to Barbados soon and debating a bikini over a one piece. I'm a 12/14 and a 34e so struggling to find a nice bikini

LizzieSiddal · 07/07/2018 09:11

I’ve just bought this and I love it. Go to the last picture and it shows the “control pants”. They are essentially just big bikini bottoms which cover the wobbly bits. (I’m 53, a size 10 and have a wobbly tummy)

thethoughtfox · 07/07/2018 09:18

I tankini. Seems to sit better over the tummy than one piece of fabric stretched over it.

Amber0685 · 07/07/2018 09:22

I think if you have narrow hips like me you need a high legged. I tried on a tankini with boy shorts and didn't like it. I tend to wear v necks as I have small boobs. Do you feel more comfortable in a bikini or one piece?

GreenMeerkat · 07/07/2018 09:27

My mum is 58 and wears a bikini.

She's in good shape and looks young for her age but still.... go for it.

dottyaboutstripes · 07/07/2018 09:57

100% bikini! Everyone wears them, including me (I'm 48 and size 10 but very wobbly and flabby)
I went to Mexico last year and can't remember seeing anyone in a one piece at all.

SporkInTheToaster · 07/07/2018 10:23

Wear whatever you feel most confident in. It’s all very well saying, “everyone else will be wearing bikinis” but if you feel self conscious in, it’ll show.

Also bikini doesn’t automatically = youthful & sexy. There are some beautifully cut one piece swimsuits that look the business, sleek, chic and gorgeous and there are some very frumpily cut bikinis. It’s not as simple as bikini or swimsuit, if you ask me. It’s about your body, your preferences, the cuts of the individual garments and of course, what how practical they need to be for what you’ll actually be doing in them (swimming? lounging? Both? Activities like snorkelling etc?)

Sporkin: There are some beautifully cut one piece swimsuits that look the business, sleek, chic and gorgeous

Yes to this.

I am a trim size 6 with a waist (almost 50) and prefer a one-piece for these reasons. It is not everyone's cup-of-tea but I was going on the basis that the OP mentioned classy.

Lovingholiday · 07/07/2018 14:03

Carrie we sound like the same person 😂😂😂

I have just ordered a couple of bikinis to try a few boden and m&s

In general I feel better in one piece, but I might not feel great if everybody else is on a bikini and there is me, stick insect being too self conscious...
I will try and update all
Thank you lovelies

blueshoes · 07/07/2018 14:14

OP, just read your update. Since you already have the one piece and tankini, go for the bikini! The Caribbean Envy sounds like a bikini-type of place and you will need one for good measure.

I'm in my 40s and would say bikinis are definitely more flattering. Plus everyone will be wearing one, and you'll be a lot more comfortable. One piece is strictly for the local swimming pool imo.

TeamRick · 07/07/2018 19:57

I agree with right if you actually want to spend some time in the sun wear a bikini! A one piece is really hot and uncomfortable to be sunbathing in!

specialsubject · 07/07/2018 20:31

all in one means a full strip for the toilet but is better for swimming or if you dont want kids pulling your top off.o

soggy knickers bad look on anyone.

MrsFluffytail · 07/07/2018 20:36

Next have got some gorgeous ones with high waisted or roll top bottoms if you are conscious of your stomach.

I've just ordered these ones:

blibblibs · 07/07/2018 20:47

I love how most of the comments are a bikini always looks better.
You've obviously never seen me in one Grin
If you do prefer a swimming costume I can assure you that you won't stand out like some posters are claiming. I lived in the Med for a couple of years and never wore a bikini and I don't remember being the only one or drawing attention to myself in one either.
Wear whatever your most comfortable in and have a fabulous holiday.

ShatnersBassoon · 07/07/2018 20:49

Bikini here, on my middle aged, probably very wobbly and poorly toned body. I really do not wear it with the intention of looking good, I wear it to feel comfortable in high temperatures and because it's more comfortable to sit in when it gets wet than a swimsuit.
