I was following a thread about him in case I needed him, and now I can't find it. He used to do as the celebs and people just table about him

After another very mediocre dye job thats made me look washed out, I've decided I need some real expert help.

You're thinking of Mark Anderson www.markandersonhair.co.uk/

Not tried him yet but I've only heard great things on here!

DianaT1969 · 01/07/2018 12:02

It's Mark Anderson, based near Dulwich. I had a haircut based on an MN thread recommendation and wouldn't go to anyone else now. He gives you his full attention and is really invested in making you look your absolute best. He's warm and friendly too - not at all intimidating.
If he doesn't answer your email straight away, don't worry as he travels a bit and tries to fit his regulars in before and after trips.

bakingbee · 01/07/2018 13:19

Mark is amazing! I've seen him twice and plan to continue to see him every 8 weeks. I have had so many compliments since he cut my hair! Feel he took years off me. He's a lovely guy and the whole experience is just so relaxing!

SpiritedLondon · 01/07/2018 15:58

God I keep hearing great things about him.

Ohladedah · 01/07/2018 20:22

Fabulous. I'm doing this! Thank you x

Yy Mark, I had fabulous haircut & hilights in May, my hair seems to be getting better & better as the weeks go on, for the first time in years I can wash my hair, blast it with a dryer then style it for a few minutes & looks great until I wash it again, it literally falls into place.
Throughly recommend & worth every penny.

EnidButton · 02/07/2018 02:37

He sounds amazing. What is the process like?

I go to hairdressers armed with pictures, description of what I'm aiming for looks wise and 'feel' wise and it still comes out not right. I'm sure I do everything right at my end of things.

I'd love to try him but can't imagine what would make him get it right when so many go wrong. I'm starting to wonder if it's my hair except I have had brilliant hairdressers before.

Eesha · 02/07/2018 08:59

So he is great with colour and cut both, or just cuts?

dontcallmelen · 02/07/2018 10:41

He does colour as well, I had hilights which are lovely really blend well with my natural colour, which is a sort of dirty blonde.
He has a long chat with you, try’s to find out what you want how long you take to style your hair, what sort of styles you like.
He then gives you a couple of ideas, of what he think will suit you, my hair was quite long when I went to see him, but had no style, it just hung around my face & looked a bloody mess, now it’s shoulder length with some soft layers, so that the weight is at the ends & it falls beautifully.
The first time in years my hair, doesn’t stick out at mad angles(I have fine hair, but it is very thick & has a slight wave)

dontcallmelen · 02/07/2018 10:46

Just one other point, be prepared for a long appointment, mine was five hours.

Eesha · 02/07/2018 10:55

I've been quoted 150 for someone to come to the house but for colour only. Just wondering whether this one might be a better option given the rave reviews! But have to consider travel and childcare too

dontcallmelen · 02/07/2018 11:16

@Eesha I paid £300 for cut & half head of hilights so he isn’t cheap.
But I was so fed up with my hair & repeatedly havin really poor haircuts I just tried not to think about how expensive it was ifykwim.
Also he does say, you only need to see him approx every three months I had my hair done end of May, not going back till sometime in September, so if you think about it sort of works out no more expensive than going usual every six weeks.

DianaT1969 · 02/07/2018 15:02

My appointment for a cut took around 2 hours. My hair was almost touching my shoulders and my cut before at a London salon for £60, had left it hanging badly with weird layers. Helmet style.
He gave 2 ideas that would suit. I chose one and it was good that day, but is growing out into a better style now that the length is better. It frames my face and accentuates my cheek bones. Since seeing him in April, I haven't had a bad hair day. I now feel that other salons are a false economy. I don't think I'll need a cut for a couple more months. But I'll go to Mark. Will ask him to do colour next too.

dontcallmelen · 02/07/2018 15:13

Yy @DianaT1969 my was the same, all mad angles & really bad layers.
My hair actually looks better as the weeks have gone on, he is the only hairdresser that has managed to get my hair to fall properly & the weight is at the bottom, rather than half way up my head.
The hilights are really good as well, nicely blended & not all stripey really natural colours.
Crikey I sound a bit evangelical 😳

Eesha · 03/07/2018 21:58

Oh I wish I could go to him but 300 is way too pricey I feel, guess I’ll be stuck with my boring hair!

MeMyElfandI · 03/07/2018 22:45

Is it only trendy young things who he will see? Will he see those of us that fall into the fat, frumpy and fifty category? Have decided to transition to grey and need expert help and a good cut.

affectionincoldclimate · 03/07/2018 22:50

I love he has following after my recommendation

affectionincoldclimate · 03/07/2018 22:59

@EnidButton you sound like my friend who was complaining so much about her hair over the years that one day I just told her I don't want to hear about it ever again and gave her mark's card. She now comes to see him religiously all the way from Essex Grin What you've got to lose?

MeMyElfandI · 03/07/2018 23:04

@affection you’ve persuaded me to give it a go. I used to be so adventurous with my hair but fell into the middle aged bob rut. To be honest going grey excites me as it feels empowering but I want to make sure that I don’t look like l’ve thrown in the towel so need an edgier/ younger hair cut to counteract the grey.

Will drop him an email when I come back of hols as the sun and sea will play havoc with hair anyway so he may as well see it at its worst.

Silly question, cost isn’t an issue as if he’s as good as everyone says he’ll be worth it, but do you tip as well and if so how much? I just wouldn’t want to either be insulting in leaving a tip or leaving too little.

affectionincoldclimate · 03/07/2018 23:17

Fantastic. You won't regret it. I'd book it well ahead though as he often leaves for a month at the time so just get that pencilled in.

You just made me realise I've never tipped him! Never felt it was an expectation to be honest.

affectionincoldclimate · 03/07/2018 23:20

Ps. But do tip if you feel like it! Also, he's incredibly down to earth so I'm sure whatever tip you give or not it'll be fine!
You must report back when you go

EnidButton · 04/07/2018 00:23

affection Grin I'm definitely considering it. I'm a 4 hour train ride away and would have to book a hotel so can't do it just yet but my hair needs to grow a bit first anyway. Loving all the positive stories. A good hair stylist is so very hard to find.

DianaT1969 · 04/07/2018 08:24

I didn't tip and had a wash, cut & blowdry for £130. It didn't seem an expectation and I haven't done it with salon owners in the past, so perhaps that's why it didn't occur to me.
I can't stress enough that he isn't all about young fashion. He's originally from Glasgow, so very down to earth and warm. I'd say give it a go. It's more expensive, but he spends more time on your hair and working out what would suit your face and lifestyle. He's technically gifted.

CurbsideProphet · 04/07/2018 09:13

@Eesha I used to go to a lovely salon in Blackheath / Lee if you want me to PM you the website for you to have a look at? I only stopped going after I moved to Lancashire otherwise she would still cut my hair!

dontcallmelen · 04/07/2018 10:57

Come too think of it, I didn’t tip either didn’t feel as though it was expected though.
@EnidButton I usually take with a pinch of salt, lots of things that MN rave about, but my hair was such a mess I just thought even if he wasn’t as good as posters said, it couldn’t look much worse than it did.
But honestly, my hair is really fab & also pp had said it’s does look better & better as the weeks go on.
