In a follow-up to my: is this gorgeous or vile thread... I have another dress I'd love expert opinions on!

www.johnlewis.com/damsel-in-a-dress-moonlake-prom-dress-orange-multi/p3214759

I've decided against the Boden orange one I got fabulous advice about in my other thread.

So here is another one I can't decide if is nice, ordinary, frou-frou to the point of tweeness, or just plain overpriced,

It's cotton, which is a HUGE plus.

I want something to wear casually but also for a couple of slightly smarter events this summer, nothing as fancy as a wedding but just nice evening BBQs, parties etc.

I overheat horrendously so cotton a huge bonus.

Can I get opinions on this offering?!

As I said in the earlier thread, I'm 41, tall (5'8) and about a size 10.

I'm rubbish at picking dresses, as I think my threads show, but I have found recently that I love wearing them and feel comfortable and confident IF i get the right one!

Well I personally don’t like this one at all.. I preferred the boden one! I don’t like the shape, length, neckline, colour pattern or in fact anything about this one!
I am same age and height as you, but fatter

JessiCake · 28/06/2018 10:08

Thanks kenworthington!! I'm not at all sure about this one either, I fear it's Twee Central, so maybe best avoided.

Sigh.

I think I should probably go back to my usual summer wardrobe of cropped Capris and naice top!

I don't seem to be much good at this dress malarkey...

OP posts:
JessiCake · 28/06/2018 10:09

I think the fact it's heavily reduced and available in so many sizes may be evidence that it's a stinker...

OP posts:
ChateauneufDuTwat · 28/06/2018 10:13

Really dislike.

It looks like a little girl's party dress sized up for adults.

ChateauneufDuTwat · 28/06/2018 10:15

Also, at 5'8 and a size 10, the world is your (dress) lobster. You can definitely do better.

JessiCake · 28/06/2018 10:17

Thanks Chateau. Now you've said that about the little girl's party dress, I can totally see it. I'm pretty good at picking dresses for my DD, so clearly I've been brainwashed!

I will continue the search! Some good sales seem to be on at the moment so hopefully I will find something. I probably need a mega-trying-on session as I'm pretty much a dress novice and not sure what works for me and what doesn't.

It looks like a kids dress - the kind of thing an 11 year old would wear to a wedding
It’s not very sophisticated for a lady in her 40s
Sorry - it’s a no from me!

CourtneyLovely · 28/06/2018 10:50

I really like it! I'm in my 40s but definitely not sophisticated though so probably just best to ignore me...

Jonbb · 28/06/2018 10:53

I like it, but worn with converse and messy hair, otherwise it's twee.

NotARegularPenguin · 28/06/2018 10:55

Don’t like it, pattern is too large.

teta · 28/06/2018 11:04

I like it too. It’s much better than the dresses yesterday.
But it is pretty girly. I would wear it but my daughters would find it far too girly for them.Agree it would look good with trainers/denim jacket.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 28/06/2018 11:06

It's nice but I think it's a little old for you sorry. More suited to someone a decade older.

FranKubelik · 28/06/2018 11:07

I'm the same height & size as you Jesse and am also trying to find a summer dress which is good for casual/slightly smarter events. I'm not used to wearing dresses for anything other than work so I'm really struggling with finding something (especially not sleeveless). Sorry I can't help but I'm watching in the hope that the S&B experts come up with some good ideas.

Gah81 · 28/06/2018 11:09

As someone who bought the Boden dress (have commented on the other thread) in orange and is a similar size and height to you, do give it a go if you haven't already. It is one of the most flattering things I now own and really nips you in at the waist, as well as having beautifully draped material.

I actually don't dislike viscose in the way I do polyester, but do be careful of shrinkage...

Racecardriver · 28/06/2018 11:09

The cut is nice but the print is hideous.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 28/06/2018 11:10

Have you tried Oasis, Warehouse, Mango or even Next? I find the slightly cheaper brands are better for summer dresses.

WinkysTeatowel · 28/06/2018 11:11

It's not orange enough!!

newdocket · 28/06/2018 11:19

oh no. it's horrid, sorry!

LuMarie · 28/06/2018 11:25

Oh goodness no.

Have you taken a look at Reiss? Pricy but the have sales all time to bring down to reasonable pricy.

With your height and size you could wear something much more chic and stylish.

I'm 5'9", a couple of sizes smaller but have waist, hips and boobs shape still.

I agree on Warehouse too, I have a lot of really lovely dresses from there too, lots of choices and are classy.

LuMarie · 28/06/2018 11:31

... and now I want to do some online shopping!

Fortunately I own all all the clothes, literally, I have no space or need for any more even after giving so many away to everyone I know (massively upping my family popularity).

Can I shop vicariously for you?

You're 41 (young), my mother wears Warehouse dresses in a 12 and looks incredible classy, she's in her sixties!

Step away from the I have no confidence dresses.....

JessiCake · 28/06/2018 11:53

HUGE thanks, everyone.

I am stepping away from the no confidence dresses Grin

Will look at Reiss and Warehouse. Thank you LuMarie! Vicarious shopping massively welcomed, I clearly really need the help!

To the pp who suggested Oasis, I do like Oasis things quite often but their dresses look very heavy on the polyester to me (I don't mind viscose but I draw the line at polyester!) Maybe I'm wrong?

OP posts:
lenalove · 28/06/2018 11:58

Yeah it's a pass from me too - mainly because it's a bit dull, and as others have said looks a bit like a scaled-up version of a children's party dress!

JessiCake · 28/06/2018 12:06

OK wow I absolutely love a few things I have seen on the warehouse site... how did I not know how fab warehouse is these days? I remember it as horrible short, tight tat!! There are some stunning dresses, and not wall-to-wall polyester either.

Thanks v much for the tip!

And for all the help from everyone else... I'm a bit of a work in progress... Grin

OP posts:
slug · 28/06/2018 12:15

How about looking at Emily and Fin dresses. All cotton with pockets!

LuMarie · 28/06/2018 12:20

Yes Warehouse did change massively a few years ago, the quality and fit is really good now too.

My mother and I have the same dress, just in a different site, early thirties and sixty, looked confident and good on both of us!

I can only access the french site for now, I'm not sure if things are the same on the uk site, but the collection looks good!
