16 yr old dd - prom dress apocalypse

Hi everyone.

Dd has her prom in a few weeks and as usual has done nothing about getting a dress. I have sent of for quite a few and we have looked at literally hundreds online but she never likes any of them. Does anyone know any good little websites or shops? we are London based.
She is about 5 ft 4, slim size 8 with hips and very pale, so pastel colours aren't any good. Colours that look lovely on her are cobalts, burgundies, that sort of thing, warm strong colours She wants a maxi dress but nothing too flouncy / lacey/ embellished....sigh. She has very slim arms and a chiselled neckline so wants to show that off. She is not big busted and has a slim waist. Everything I suggest is an 'old lady dress' according to her Sad. But she won't look herself. I don't want to get anything from overseas as we sent off for two dresses from abroad and they arrived looking nothing like the picture, plus cost a fortune to return.

if anyone has any bright ideas please pass them on. Thanks fro reading!

Chi Chi London is a good website for dresses. Have you tried that one?

BrownTurkey · 17/05/2018 16:51

This thread had lots of shops on www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3249451-Prom-dresses

CurbsideProphet · 17/05/2018 16:52

Does she actually want to go, or is she nervous? She doesn't sound keen if she won't look for her own outfit!

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/05/2018 16:52

We got DD1’s dress from TKMaxx in High StreetKen.

Dozer · 17/05/2018 16:52

Why are you looking for her? Set a budget (unless she has an allowance for clothes) and let her sort it.

BrownTurkey · 17/05/2018 16:53

I would also pointedly get out her most suitable outfit and say well I guess this would work then as you have not found anything else. And then leave it in her hands to come to you.

TheNemesisOfLame · 17/05/2018 16:58

Amazon Ever Pretty. Easy to return and fantastic quality for the price. You'll need to get it shortened tho.

RhythmStix · 17/05/2018 17:05

thanks very much for those suggestions...will look into them immediately!

I'm looking for her because she is a very dreamy sort of girl...not organised. She does want to do but is immersed in GCSEs at the moment. I know I ought to get her to do it.

Monsoon often have nice dresses. A bit more sophisticated than “prom” dresses. But she might think that is too old for her.

LIZS · 17/05/2018 18:19

Have a look on the dp website - they have brands such as Chichi and Little Mistress.

Lifeaback · 17/05/2018 18:23

ldnfashion.com/features/prom-dress-london/

Lots of shops on here, most of them have an online store too so you can look beforehand.

Silly question as you probably have, but have you looked on asos? Lots of 'young' type ones under their bridesmaid section

quiz do some good bits for good prices.

Bodear · 17/05/2018 18:53

I don’t have kids so I probably shouldn’t comment but I don’t understand these threads. If your daughter doesn’t like your taste then why wouldn’t/ shouldn’t she take responsibility for shopping for the dress herself? Surely that’s a good life lesson and it’s not a horrible thing to have to do. I’m not trying to be goady, I’m genuinely asking.

GreenTulips · 17/05/2018 19:00

Jumpsuit instead

Bodear....you are right. I'm guilty as charged.

Well I would have probably said the same as bodear at one point, but here I am with a dd dealing with exams and I just want to do something for her.
I can't take chemistry gcse (again) for her, but I can trawl websites for dresses and shoes.
dd's dress is from asos, they have loads. Still looking for shoes though.

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/05/2018 20:13

I know this is a bit 'not the done thing' but she wouldn't like this dress would she? It was my dd's prom dress 2 years ago and we are now trying to sell it. It is a size 8, and you can see my dd is a similar build. The dress is a lovely colour, not fussy, but it is full length (but you could have it taken up). Oh, and I am not sure why in the photo it looks bunched up at the waist as it isn't at all, just a bad moment.

Hi OP, have you looked on Mango? They have some lovely simple dresses your dd might like.

Racecardriver · 17/05/2018 20:36

Just give her the money and leave her to sort it out. It's not like she will turn up naked.

MarmiteTermite · 17/05/2018 20:41

We found my daughter’s in a shop called Quiz - they have lots of prom dresses. This is hers:
www.quizclothing.co.uk/clothes/00100013247.html
She is also a slim, pale, size 8 of about 5’4”!

snowboardingqueen · 17/05/2018 20:47

Dumbledoresgirl I hope this doesn’t sound strange, but I love the fact your daughter has kept her skin natural and not false tanned! Beautiful dress too.
