Is face-powder too old-lady-ish? What do you do to stop shine?

I've always thought face powder is for old ladies, and I'm not one, yet (40s). But my once 'dewy' skin now just looks shiny and urgh. What can i use to take off the shine without looking powdery?

Try a hydrating water spray after applying powder and pat your face gently. You can buy special ones eg by Evian but any fine spray bottle filled with water would work. I find it makes my look more youthful and helps set the makeup.

I'm just in my 50's (suffering from mild occasional hot flushes) and have recently switched to a light bronzer, so I now have nice fresh looking colouring but no 'sweaty' looking shine.

Oil blotting sheets.

Brittanyspears · 15/05/2018 16:16

Mac do a powder called blot that does exactly that, it doesnt add colour

cloudtree · 15/05/2018 16:17

I wear full make up every day and wouldn't be without powder. It isn't even vaguely old ladyish Confused

cloudtree · 15/05/2018 16:17

and I don't look powdery

MissReginaPhilange · 15/05/2018 16:18

I'm 29 and wear face powder every day....

mintich · 15/05/2018 16:19

I've worn face powder every day since I was 17! Although my skin is so oily, that I don't stand a chance of looking powdery

vampirethriller · 15/05/2018 16:20

Clinique do an amazing translucent powder, no colour, isn't chalky, lasts months.

Barabajagal · 15/05/2018 16:21

Some face powders nowadays are a bazillion miles away from the heavy formula(e) of yesteryear. They’re light and don’t settle into creases the way they used to. Get thee to a good makeup counter and try some.

KirstenRaymonde · 15/05/2018 16:21

I’m 30 and wear face powder (not every day but when I’m getting properly made up, reasonably regularly) I don’t look like an old lady. It sets the foundation. A setting spray on top makes it look more like skin again and not too powdery. I make sure it’s a really finely milled one, I also use highlighter and bronzer so it’s not a flat look on my face.

fruityb · 15/05/2018 16:23

Rimmel stay matte face powder. I love it.

Mooey89 · 15/05/2018 16:24

I’m 29 and use face powder!
Translucent powder by MAC, just apply it to T zone and under eyes.

Fairylea · 15/05/2018 16:27

Another lover of Rimmel stay matte!

I’m 37 and have worn it since I was 14! (Even through 15 years of working for Clinique as a make up counter consultant)!

Power isn’t old ladyish at all! Nothing else makes make up stay put.

SergeantPfeffer · 15/05/2018 16:32

I’ve been wearing powder since my teens too! I have decent, but sensitive skin so rarely wear foundation as it tends to irritate me and I can get away without it. I wear translucent powder from Boots no. 7 to even my skin tone out and remove shininess.

Justgivemesomepeace · 15/05/2018 16:33

I've used powder since I was a teenager. I'm 47 now. Never crossed my mind not to. What else would you use?

TheHonGalahadThreepwood · 15/05/2018 16:34

All my friends and I have been using powder compacts since we were about 14. In fact, I think I was wearing it before I ever wore foundation, just to stop the shiny look. You don't need to look powdery if you apply it correctly.

BusterGonad · 15/05/2018 17:30

I'm not a lover of face powder BUT if I feel my make up needs setting I'll apply Benefit dandelion all over with a fluffy brush. Leaves me glowing and sets my make up.

Lottapianos · 15/05/2018 17:32

No 7 Airbrush Away powder is marvellous. It manages to mattify and illuminate at the same time.

BadTasteFlump · 15/05/2018 18:26

It's not old-ladyish if you do it right.

Don't use pressed powder because it has gloop in it to stick it together so looks heavier on the skin. Use a loose powder (I like the Rimmel one in Transparent) and a big brush - dip it in the powder then tap most of it off again. Then just swish it over your T zone, not your whole face.

hildabaker · 15/05/2018 18:37

It makeup 'bye bye pores' is good.

thethoughtfox · 15/05/2018 19:14

Mac Fix + is a spray you can use under make up to keep it on longer but also over make up when finished. It takes away the powdery look of well, powder. Try Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush powder. It isn't powdery at all ( has rose oil and wax in it) and you just use a big brush to put a little on the bits you know will go shiny.

ggirl · 15/05/2018 19:17

Yes to Charlotte Tilbury flawless powder ..it's fabulous

Leicesterpiggott · 15/05/2018 20:14
