Is face-powder too old-lady-ish? What do you do to stop shine?

I've always thought face powder is for old ladies, and I'm not one, yet (40s). But my once 'dewy' skin now just looks shiny and urgh. What can i use to take off the shine without looking powdery?

I am never without it. 46 and a shiny face on me doesn't say "dewy and youthful", more menopausal! Vichy do a great light translucent powder.

Rimmel stay matte

What's the problem with it

My oily face seems to get oiler with age, I’m 48 and always worn powder and just could not get away with not wearing it. It doesn’t age me, I still get told I look younger than my age! They’re a world away from Max Factor Creme Puff these days!

I love the "old lady" look so much I have a vintage pressed powder compact I refill with Max Factor. A light touch it doesn't look obviously powdery.

Use a translucent loose powder and apply it with a huge powder brush so that any excess powder is brushed away. Looks much less "cakey" than pressed powder.

Also, apply some highlighter beforehand - it will shine through in a subtle way so you don't look too matte.
