Hippies from the 1990’s -anyone got an urge to revisit too?

Frankiewears · 20/04/2018 18:37

My style back then was very fairtrade hippie with some homemade stuff. I really miss the colour and creativity and was wondering if others were feeling it too?

At the moment I want patchwork dungarees, tie dye dresses and those recycled sari/scarf skirts.

I like an artsy vibe too.

Anyone found anything fantastic lately along these lines?

No, and anything hippie-ish and floaty these days is invariably synthetic chiffon, whereas in the good old days, they were lovely to wear Indian cheesecloth muslin.

Frankiewears · 20/04/2018 18:55

The fairtrade stuff I have looked at is predominantly cotton. I like Gringo, Nomads and Skunkfunk.

These are some of the things I am currently obsessing over 😁

I used to shop at somewhere called Cobweb, and I had some excellent tie dye wear. I now have an amazing range of tie dye socks thanks to a woman who has a business making this kind of thing. They’re ace, and I can always feel a little bit hippy in secret.

Frankiewears · 20/04/2018 19:16

Liking the idea of the socks Callamia

I have some Solmate ones that I love.

I think this woman here has great style -so much so that I tracked down the sandals today 😁

Today I wanged out a hippy scarf and earrings combo that I haven’t worn for years and felt much more me.

Have you tried Black Yak?

Loraline · 20/04/2018 19:41

I had those dungarees! And a similar skirt.

Loraline · 20/04/2018 19:43

I wad less hippy and more grungy but I varied between combats, check shirts and band t shirts, and patchwork, floaty stuff

Eminybob · 20/04/2018 19:48

I loved this style as a teenager. I remember spending hours in the local “hippy shops” in town, choosing inscence and candles. I had some lovely floaty tie dye dresses, and a gorgeous embroidered bag with the little mirrors sewn on.

I’m afraid I’m no help finding anything currently, but your post has made me very nostalgic.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 20/04/2018 19:50

I love those turquoise shoes.

I had a hippy phase as a teen but it's not "me" anymore. 15 year old me would be unimpressed.

Guinefort · 20/04/2018 20:04

Oh OP you have sent me back down memory lane! I used to get these amazing long cotton skirts, some had a sort Paisley pattern and fringes and even bells. I swear there were no two the same in the shop!! Worn with my oxblood steel capped DMs of course Grin.

I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the shop and it's driving me mad!!!!! Anyone lived in Bath in the 1990s who can help me - the shop was at the top of Broad street and then moved to Walcot Street I think?

Anyway, sorry OP I can't help with recommendations I'm a very boring dresser these days Sad

Frankiewears · 20/04/2018 20:08

Blank that site is fantastic! Thank-you so much.

I feel a gecko top requirement 😁

I love this style. I tend to look on eBay for true vintage 90s clothes and hippie/fairtrade stuff. I love the shoes in the first picture!

GrannyGrissle · 20/04/2018 20:13

Spiveys Web in Macclesfield sell what you're after OP and have an online shop. RIP the Silver Arcade in Leicester.

Frankiewears · 20/04/2018 20:14

I had the most beautiful patchwork maxi dress that I mourn the loss of.

Also an African inspired tribal print dungaree maxi dress.

The clothes were so good.

Mine came from Wales where I was studying and the look was a mash up of hippie/new age/raver and retro geek. Nose piercing compulsory 😁

@Guinefort - I know exactly the shop you mean I just can't remember the name!

MaybeDoctor · 20/04/2018 20:20

I have a couple of my 90’s hippie skirts in my clothing ‘archive’ as they are so gorgeous I couldn’t bear to part with them!

The little bells on everything!

MuddyForestWalks · 20/04/2018 20:22

I could smell the incense sticks burning in the local hippy clothing shop just from reading the OP Grin aaaahhh nostalgia...

hugoagogo · 20/04/2018 20:27

Oh I remember the silver arcade.
My particular haunt was Head in the Clouds in Norwich- it was still going strong a couple of years ago and I hope it still is.
Did anyone else wear beads in the their fringe? Blush

MuddyForestWalks · 20/04/2018 20:27

Omg according to facebook, the Belfast hippy shop is still open and trading in the same location as it was 20 years ago Shock and will virtually the same stock, going by the photos. This makes me oddly happy. I'm off to listen to Absolute Radio 90s and search online for bacardi breezers.

IJustLostTheGame · 20/04/2018 20:28

In the 90s I wore my mum's hippy stuff from the 70s and it's long since fallen apart. Sad
She was a true hippy and trekked through the middle East and the Himalayas and spent a load of time in India.
I felt very authentic wearing her old stuff.

WesternMeadowlark · 20/04/2018 20:32

It's not for me - at the moment; you never know when your inner hippie is going to waft to the surface Grin - but I love seeing other people wearing this style, it's so cheerful and relaxed.

Trulymadlymotherly · 20/04/2018 20:35

@muddyforestwalks fresh garbage! I moved back to ni a few years ago. Every time I walk past it I have a little pang of nostalgia for incense, hippy skirts and the naval piercing I was never thin enough to get. Still thinking of getting my nose done though.

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 20/04/2018 20:44

There was a thread a while back - something like ‘but I don’t want to look groomed’ which Jas loads of ideas - might be with clicking down .

I had loads from quiggins in Liverpool. Need to think about reclaiming/ revisiting as now I look like —a fatter version of — everyone else

mamaduckbone · 20/04/2018 20:54

grannygrissle I used to shop in the Silver Arcade and Voodoo! Bought my tie dye dungarees and leggings there and my second hand grandad shirts from the Wardrobe. The Very Bizarre is still there I think.
I’d look utterly ridiculous in any of it now but also feeling very nostalgic and sort of wish I’d kept it all. I think dh would divorce me if he saw me in my full tie dye hennaed hair glory Grin
