Has anyone has their dark hair colour stripped to go blonde?

I have a lot of dark colour build up after many years of colouring. Natural colour is brown but getting very grey and I have to have the roots done every three weeks which is so tedious and seeing the grey tram line really depresses me.

So, I'm thinking of going lighter. I have a horror of it being orangey or golden so bleach would be required and lots of highlights.

How does it work? Do you spend a day at the salon getting it all stripped out then put highlights over it? Does this help the grey? Is it less time consuming, or more??

Help. Please.

Following as considering the same!

Just getting highlights worked to make my hair blonder. Didn't need my hair stripping, just the highlights. I started with a t-bar, then half head and the last twice got a full head. Due to get my roots done tomorrow.

Were you very dark to start with? Did you have bleach highlights? How do you find the regrowth?

My hair was dark brown and i dyed it regularly. Yes they would have been bleach highlights with a toner used afterwards. Root growth is noticeable but my greys help blend it in better

My dd had a build up of dye of various shades and just got highlights . She wanted to be quite blonde and has had 3 goes so far.
It lifted really well on the first set.

donajimena · 11/04/2018 21:51

I just went for highlights. The regrowth looks ok too. I can go 8 weeks before I have to get it redone.
The grey that comes through almost looks blond if you squint Grin so no harsh line.
I have dark hair.

I've never had my hair stripped and I go from
dark chestnut brown, to blond highlights, to reddish colours.

DameSaggyMith · 11/04/2018 21:59

I had this done today - long consultation as I was afraid of exactly what you are asking, but she recommended just highlights with toner, and they've come out really well, from dyed dark brown.

BibiThree · 11/04/2018 22:04

I did to go from dark (dyed) to copper red. It worked, the red took really well and I was happy with the result at the time, but it left my hair in terrible condition.
It took about 2.5 - 3 hrs all together.

peanutbear · 11/04/2018 22:05

I've just had mine done tonight lots of highlights in foils and toner looks fab great just blends in

Stroller15 · 11/04/2018 22:18

I have really dark hair, also going grey now. Through the years I coloured it with everything under the sun (and had as many salon jobs) so now wanted to go lighter. Brown looks too matte and the grey is depressing. My roots are lighter and greyer so my hairdresser did balayage in the first go so the colour evens out a bit. On Friday I'm going to get highlights and toner. If I had to suggest anything is get the best hairdresser you can find (recommendations etc) and don't trust anyone who suggest a bleach bath or completely stripping your hair!

Haven't had my colour stripped but have gone from very dark to blonde - see pic!

I went from very dark to light and had a bleach bath then toner and highlights over the top. Didn’t affect hair too much at all.

ceeveebee · 11/04/2018 22:49

I went from dark brown to lilac/grey (took 6 hour) then platinum blonde (3-4 hours each time) and now back to mid brown with highlights - a lot less maintenance!

I had some lowlights in there too

I went from dark brown to platinum blonde 3 years ago. I consulted with a (recommended) colourist in advance about whether it could be done and she told me to stop using colour for about 6 weeks before. On the day it took 3 bleaches - after the first it was bright orange (think John Lyndon), after second custard yellow, after third white blonde. Took about 7 hours! Roots and cut now takes about 2.5-3 every 7 or so weeks. My hair is in good condition but it’s short so never that dead. Go for it - blonde suits me so much more than my natural colour ever did.

starsandstuff · 12/04/2018 00:41

When I got to the roots needing done all the time stage I actually decided to see what the grey would be like, just to give you another option. I grew it out which isn't for everyone, but if you're getting lighter pieces through it anyway to go blonde you could aim for your natural colour that way. I can't tell you how great it is never having to get your roots done Grin

@starsandstuff gorgeous hair!!

Starsandstuff wow!

I'm a natural blonde, but with the help of the hairdresser since I was 40 because it lost its lustre, I go and have it touched up every 4 weeks. I would have much preferred to be dark, my skin is pale and without makeup I look like I've got flu.

As far as having more fun, I've stuff to smile to myself about in the old folks home.

TellOutMySoul · 12/04/2018 21:28

I prefer to be dark too. Sadly, once the grey kicks in, it really sucks to be brunette as it is so much more noticeable!

I'm naturally very dark brown and when the grey started to come in thick and fast I went lighter via balayage highlights. I have foils woven through back and sides so blonde blends the grey. Then my hairdresser hand paints the colour to top and front so this looks more natural. I get this done 3/4 times a year.

It's much lower maintenance than dying it dark brown. Every 4 weeks or so I use Revlon root touch up to cover greys at front and along the parting.

I do find it dries my hair out so have to use lots of conditioner. Good luck!

Middleoftheroad · 13/04/2018 08:31

I went from dark to blonde due to my greys/whites.

I did it via highlights until I was eventually blonde all over.

It didn't suit me, the maintenance was hard, the regrowth looked awful and my hair like straw. It took half a year for my hair to get back to a decent condition afterwards.

I didn't like being blonde either as I've always had some dark.

I'm now back to brown base colour and highlights and prefer this.

Middleoftheroad · 13/04/2018 08:38

My roots come in at two weeks (got first greys at 19 so now 45 and massively grey) so I simply use a spray/powder root touch up. You don't have to get them dyed every few weeks.
