Has anyone has their dark hair colour stripped to go blonde?

I have a lot of dark colour build up after many years of colouring. Natural colour is brown but getting very grey and I have to have the roots done every three weeks which is so tedious and seeing the grey tram line really depresses me.

So, I'm thinking of going lighter. I have a horror of it being orangey or golden so bleach would be required and lots of highlights.

How does it work? Do you spend a day at the salon getting it all stripped out then put highlights over it? Does this help the grey? Is it less time consuming, or more??

Help. Please.

I went from almost black after layer upon layer of dark brown to light brown/blonde with several sessions of highlights and then balayage.

I now only need my regrowrh doing every 8 weeks as opposed to about every 3 or 4.

I have stripped my own hair a few times. The first was going from black to blonde for my wedding, and stupidly went dark again a few years later and had to strip it again.
I used colour b4 extra strength, then put a dark ash blonde semi permanent over it then gradually lightened it over the next week or so.
I do have very resilient hair though so this may not be for everyone!

Oh and I just remember I had it done professionally before that and it cost a bloody fortune (and this was around 18 years ago!)
Clearly I've not learnt my lesson!

Yes I am dark brunette and did this a couple of years ago. It took ages and stages including a few weeks of ginger. I trusted my colourist to take it slow. It did look brilliant I loved it but maintaining it was expensive and time consuming so I'm back to brown and battling grey roots now!!

Let a hairdresser do it. I went from very bleach blonde to dark brown almost black to bleach blonde again. Did it slowly with highlights took about 4/5 appointments but I liked my hair inbetween and my hair is still healthy now. I hate stripping my hair makes it like straw! Goodluck x

norfolklassie that's my goal, reducing the frequency of salon visits and the awful grey tramline.

My hairdresser used a product Olaplex on my hair when i wanted to go from dark brown to blonde balayage/ombre. I had been dyeing it at home for a few years so it had brown/red/lord knows what else on it.

She used Olaplex the first time, then built up the colour naturally over a few months - she said its the only way to do it without wrecking your hair in the process. I know bugger all about hair really!

Couple of years on, hair is in much better condition and looks really natural.

Definitely go to the hairdressers rather than a DIY job though!

They put some highlights in using foils around my face which hides the grey coming through in my hairline. My hairdresser uses Olaplex too, it’s really good.
