Wellies for Big Calves

Please help me,

I really need some wellies and have been trying to buy some since October but everywhere I've looked has either been out of stock in my size (5) or not had any I could get my legs into. I'm starting to go a bit insane.

I have VERY muscular calves and so struggle to get wellies on most of the time, but I really need some. I prefer not to buy online as I can't try them on but if someone could tell me a brand which caters for super-massive-calves then I would maybe give it a go.

any suggestions?

p.s. I can't afford Hunters.

If the men’s are too big, what about kids sizes in unisex style at same type of shop ?

eggncress · 09/04/2018 14:00

I think Shoezone do them too

ShotsFired · 09/04/2018 14:03

I bought whatever cheapo ones I could find, then cut them off at shin height when I got home.

(incidentally, cutting welly rubber is strangely and smoothly satisfying, like writing on banana skin)

eggncress · 09/04/2018 14:18

Glad you got something .... might give the rubber cutting a go Grin

usercantsleep · 09/04/2018 14:22

I have legs like shot putters - I got mine from b&q!

soupforbrains · 09/04/2018 15:23

right, So at the weekend I went to go outdoors and also our equestrian superstore.

Tried on an array of Dunlops, hunters, and joules. None of which were anywhere near big enough for my calves. As well as some other brands that hadn't been mentioned on here so far.

Did find Muck boots with the Neoprene which fitted, BUT they were way too expensive for my budget.

eggncress and shotsfired I would HAPPILY buy any old cheap ones but I can't find any in any shops round here even close to my size.

I have given up for now, but will continue to monitor the stocks in all the local cheap shoe shops (as I have been doing since October)

usercantsleep damn! I was in B&Q at the weekend too and didn't think to look for wellies there!

It depends what you want them for OP. I have black Dunlop wellies from Sports Direct that were around £12. They’re not ‘fashion wellies’, they’re more hard wearing as I wanted them for dog walking and all the patterned, fashion wellies ripped after a few wears. The Dunlop ones are quite wide fitting.

BringMeCoffeePlease · 09/04/2018 15:41

Okay, just read your last post. Advice I would still give is: I would avoid fashion wellies (I mean patterned ones from supermarkets, Joules, Primark etc) and go for ones that are more like farming wellies. I imagine they’ll come in different widths and they’re hard wearing.

soupforbrains · 09/04/2018 19:48

Hats already what I've been doing bringme

I've contacted some industry suppliers direct and got their measurements form them but none of them are wide enough so far.

I'm just going to give up I think.

Have you a Scats country store or anything similar nearby?

(although I think I got mine from B&Q for a tenner too!)

InspiredByIntegrity · 09/04/2018 21:03

Muck but buy the childrens. I bought adult size 5 from the children's range in the online sale. Were a 1/4 of the full price of adults...but the neoprene has purple stripes on it. I can live with that for the saving. Smile

soupforbrains · 09/04/2018 21:10

shots yes I have. we have a scats and another non chain mega store. And then the equestrian centre I mentioned. I've also tried several of the larger garden centres.

inspired that's a great suggestion I'll keep an eye out for sales. I don't really care what they look like I just need reliable boots that actually fit.

Countrywide are going into administration so there are lots of bargains to be had. Maybe something that would be out of budget might be in budget iyswim due to their massive discounts at the moment.

soupforbrains · 09/04/2018 22:23

dragon I think those wellies, while VERY snazzy, are a wide fit in the foot rather than in the calf.

I'll check out the rest of the wide welly site though.

Another good tip. Thanks moonflower.

My calves must be ginormous. I have Dunlop's, and they are too tight. I'm thinking I might be better just wearing carrier bags on my feet like Withnail and I.

TillyVonMilly · 09/04/2018 22:36

I got a pair of Jileon wellies about18 months ago, first pair I’ve owned since I was a kid! They’re actually a bit on the big side, plenty of room for tucking jeans into and they’ve been absolutely fine through this long winter with all its snow.

soupforbrains · 10/04/2018 07:08

@hazeyjane don't worry, I tried on a gazillion styles of Dunlops at the weekend and none of them even came close to accommodating my calf.

@TillyVonMilly I tried on several pairs of jileon's at the weekend. But the problem I had with them was that their expanding bit didn't come down far enough. So actually around the top I had plenty of room but I could pull the boots up properly because the part just below the 'split' wasn't wide enough (and it should be the bit accommodating the widest bit of my calf).

soupforbrains · 10/04/2018 07:09

@Moonflower12 Countrywide was a great suggestion. We don't have one locally though and the website claims not to have any wellies in stock at all. I guess they already sold out their stock what with all the snow.

OP posts:
TillyVonMilly · 10/04/2018 08:17

soup it’s a pain trying to find long boots for my wide calves. I was really happy when the jileon wellies fitted. Smile
I thought the extra wide would have been ok for you as they fit up to 53cm so just over 21 inches. Back to the drawing board

CuckingFunt1987 · 10/04/2018 09:11

As a farmers wife I highly recommend the Dunlop ones fromagricultural stores . Hunter wellies and joules are more a fashion item and don't tend to do well in "proper muddy" conditions where as the ones from agricultural stores will last you years
